Thanks Mike! Hey, that was you in your old animated
TC signature right? MadSamoanMike! :D

Mahalo Brad! Cannot think of a better place than on the Big Island
to see some fire being spun!

Well I thought I would be finished with this a couple of days ago,
but I have been spinning my wheels with the fire. I have always
done cartoony fire in the past and might not really have the chops yet
to pull off what I want it to really look like. Do not want to over work
it, especially on velvet. Will put it down to dry for a day or so
and come back with fresh eyes. Must be at "the Hump" that Brad talks about.

Next progress pic...do not let the signature fool you, it is there to
fool me into thinking it is almost done or I will beat a dead horse.

Jason = awesome
Just beautiful. You can feel the heat.
I like the look of the fire between the last two progress picks. The glow in the last one is phenomenal but I like the softer flame 'detail' in the 2nd to last version a tad better (i.e. -- brightest at the source of the flame and dissipates/softens as it rises).
You are amazing.

WOW! The fire dancer painting is coming along great! Love the in-progress shots! Are you still fretting over the fire? It's lookin' good so far!

What is the medium of the reclining wahine? That piece looks incredible too!

Aloha!

Hey thanks there John! I agree with you. Sometimes
I think I need someone with a hammer standing behind me
warning me not to overwork it or....POW!!!
When are we gonna see some more Mr.PPP updates?
Needs me fix!

Mahalo Eric! The fretting is over :). I think it looks
alright. Besides, since it is on velvet, I cannot paint over
it like with other mediums. I Finished it and will post
another picture after I get it back from my framer.
The reclining wahine sketch was done with pencil. Thanks!
Whens the next Tobunga art avalanche? Super Stuff bruddah!

Speaking of that here is the first progress pic.

Mahalo for looking!

Love the fire dancer...cant wait to see more Kane action :)

These are looking great. Nice work!

First FIRE
Now you got this hot dark mama on the scene...
mmmmmmm!
you were born to paint Ohio Players album covers, baby!

rockin the velvet you are!
:)

Why thank you liz! More Kanes on the way! In between
a boob or two. :D

Mahalo Slacks! Really appreciate the feedback. Your Kanaloa
bar is coming out awesome! Those tapa tiles a worth the price of admission alone.
Great job!

Cheers Ken! Man, those are some hilarious Album covers!
Would be fun to do something inspired by them.
If anyone is on FIRE though, I think it is you bro!
Your output is insane! I do one brush stroke and turn
around and in that same amount of time you got enough pieces for a show!
Incredible indeed!

Here are some more brushstrokes added...

YAY!

She is looking soooooo HAWT,Jason!
beautiful eyes
warm smile
and hips you wanna take a drive over!
Thanks for the kind words here and on me thread
but you know...
slow and steady wins the race...
:)

Amazing man
you got pro written all over ya!
FI-YAH!

Yeah, Jason - that was my flaming avatar :)

The Samoan turned out great, can't wait to see the Flame Eater next.

The Tyree Yellow Lei is turning out beautifully. But, (and I'll probably get burned at the TC stake for this blasphemy) I like your style better than Tyree's. I like your photorealism and I like the darker backgrounds with the multiple light sources. There, I said it! :D

Mucho Mahalo Gents!

Thanks Kenny! Just call me Cecil turtle.
Doodeeeedooodeeedodo....

Cheers Mike! You are too kind but I will take it! :D
Actually, I am still in awe of his flesh tones.
Would like to see more of his velvets.

Next paint slinging. Steady as she goes!

Beautiful lei!

Thanks there Brad! Still gingerly bringing it out from the light
as this piece of velvet is acting temper-mental on me. :o

Jason!!!
I love this!!!
It is seriously turning into something on the level of Gauguin (one of my favorite artists). Just wonderful artistry.
I'm guessing this one is going to be too good for you to let go but I would sure be interested in buying a print for Hula Sue's.
Awesome work. Way to go.

WOW thanks John! You are too kind about the Gauguin (mine too) remark, but I think I am getting
better with each painting. Actually, I am gonna offer it up on the TC marketplace in one
of those frames you like when I am finished with it. So if you are interested in the original
I can put you 1rst on the list. Would be KILLER to see it in your AMAZING TIKI PALACE!
Let me know. Mahalo again!

Lovely work Jason! As always. Got to see your velvets at the tonga hut the other night. Great job my friend.
Nice vintage feel, cant wait to chat on Friday night.

Cheers MP! Thanks for the props on the tonga hut pieces
and your hand in helping to make it happen. Hey, congrats to you on
the La Luz show! Looks like you are tearing up the SoCal tiki
scene this week. You are everywhere! Look forward to hanging with you on Friday.

Cheers John! I just sent you a PM.

Done! Just added a little more detail.

That's some dreamy wahine! GREAT job, Jason.

Hey Thanks Andy! Appreciate the comps.

Just got this back from the framer. Off to its new
home soon.

Hey Jason,
Haven't been able to visit TikiCentral for a while, but your's was the first thread I came back to visit - still is my favorite. Great new art! Still love your work! One day I'll have one of them on my walls . . .

Hey Danno! Hows it going? Wondered where you were.
Thanks for checking in to my thread and digging the new
paintings.

This new one in progress is based on one of my favorite images
by Sylvain. Kinda reminds me of Wyeths "Christinas World".
Hope to do it justice on velvet.

Sketch...

Mahalo for looking and lurking!

Gonna be a beaut Jason. I love the mood of the clouds in the background, will those be storm clouds?

Mahalo Mike! Yeah, storm clouds that are beginning to break up
after a heavy rain. Started to block in the boat too.

Hey Jason,
That's one of my favorite Sylvain photos, too. I had commissioned a velvet from Song Shen on the same picture. It will be interesting to see the contrast between the two. I definitely love the feel of your painting so far! Is this a commissioned work or are you selling this one?

Cheers Danno! This one is approx. 14" x 18" and is a velvet study for a larger
velvet Commission which will be 24" x 32". So I will probably be selling the
study depending on how it turns out. :)

Next progress pic....

Mahalo!

I'm thinking you must pour liquid gold into your paintings to make the colors so rich :)

Holy Smokes!
That reclining wahine is sensually superb!
BUT this new one.....
PERFECT!
in mood
figure placement
implied narrative
soft tropical breeze....
MASTERPIECE in the MAKING,Jason!
You need a Velvet cape after this!

Hey Thanks there Mike and Kinny!
Lovin that blowfish piece LLT!
Diggin that bottle project MDM!

Been swamped with work, but managed to do something late last night I think.
Hard to tell with velvet sometimes.

next progress pic...

Does it still qualify as a black velvet painting if you paint over all the black velvet?

Looks great, the details of the schooner (?) are really starting to pop.

D
Danno posted on Sat, Apr 24, 2010 7:35 AM

I agree with MadDog, the details on the ship are coming out very nice. Your best so far . . . ? It's hard to decide. Everyone of your velvets would look great on one of my walls! Thanks again for sharing all of your amazing art with us!

:)

wonderful....

Cheers Chaps!

Good question Mike. The answer is yes. Her hair area will remain black velvet
with a few highlights. As long as there is some virgin velvet showing, it is still technically
a black velvet painting according to the International Kitch Society.

Mucho Mahalo Danno! Great finally meeting you last night at the Lush Show.

Thanks Mr. LLT. Always appreciate you stopping by.

Well, finally back on this Vahine (see if Mike takes the bait ).
Worked on bringing her face out some. Will be finished soon.

you have mastered the art of painting ships on velvet my good man. I would be interested in seeing a whole series on these...who needs nekkid chics when you have nautical themes to tackle??

Such a dichotomy; she seems to be looking back at the boat and yet she's looking forward with a FULL gaze too :o :)

Looks beautiful Jason. The hair! Of course.
