Hi Iokona!
I LOVE how your latest pieces are turning out
They are so rich and glowy.
I can't wait for you to start on your first velvet!
Ok... I'll pose for you, but only if you pose for me in
a leopard loincloth ala tarzan:-)

Ummm, wouldn't this sort of thing be better as a PM? TMI!!!
I didn't mind the mental image of Hula Lula in a pareo, but Iokona in a leopard loincloth is just too much!

Iokona Ki'i-

I don't see anything about selling them. Are they for your own enjoyment? They would be a great addition to any Tiki Lounge/Room/Bar.

Thanks for sharing them. They are outstanding.

Craig

the colors on these are so rich and eye-popping!
beautiful...
simple and beautiful!

I have a spare tarzan loincloth if you need one!
:)

Been working on a few Velvet Paintings. Amazing medium! Not ready to show yet.
Don't think I want to show progress shots since I'm just starting out and am
in the dark - pun intended  - Anyways, here's another sketch in progress.
I think I want to do a velvet version of this.
Mahalo for looking!

HL

Wow, Iokona! You are on fire!
This one is coming out really gorgeous!
:)

This last one is especially nice. I like the close up and that she's doing something - not just standing or looking straight out. Very nice proportions. Ready for the velvet!
Hey, I think you guys are cute with the posing and the Tarzan stuff! Make hay while the sun shines.
And it was great to meet you two at the Mayflower on Saturday! See you again soon, I hope!

Thanks Kiki Von Tiki! It was a pleasure meeting you too! Still
don't know how you changed into that dress so quickly! :)
Great purses! Looking forward to seeing your other creations
as is Claudette.

Let me know if you'll be making some Tarzan styled threads too!

Next progress shot....

Aloha!
Next progress shot...

She's a beauty!

Grog, Thanks!
Cool mugs! You make more!

Mahalo Dano! I'm working on a few velvets. This being one of them.
Taking it slow. Tryin to learn from the master Leeteg. Will let you know
when ready. Thanks!

Finished sketch....

Absolutely gorgeous! Keep up the great work!!!!!

Excellent work on these! Very tasteful and classic.....

Thanks Mike and Sam!
Hopefully my velvets will turn out the same!
Fingers crossed.

Speaking of velvets, a good friend of ours is the wonderful
pinup artist Olivia, http://www.eolivia.com, who does incredible Bettie Page paintings
among others. She is a fan of our line Fluff, http://www.fluffshop.com, which is how we initially
met many years ago. And, of course we're big fans of her! Well, she saw some of the stuff
Claudette and I have been working on on the side...some posted on TC...and has invited us
to contribute to her upcoming art show celebrating Miss Bettie.
Pretty Cool!...and scary! Especially since it is in May!
And I've never attempted to draw/paint Bettie Page before!
And I'm just starting to learn how to paint on velvet!
And it's gonna be shown along side Olivia!

So I have decided to do a Velvet Bettie with Tiki.
I'm gonna post some sketches and see which one get the
the best response and go from there.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

P.S. I'll post info about the show soon under Cal events!
All I know so far is it's gonna be crazy!

In progress sketch...ran out of paper room...bit dodgy...
...wonky...fugly...but, gotta start somewhere...

Aloha All,

Here is the first progress shot of one of the Velvets
I'm practicing on. This one is with acrylic. The others are
being done on oil. Will post the oil ones soon along with
some more progress pics of this acrylic piece. So far I'm liking oil
better...no big surprise there.

Mahalo for looking. :)

Totally diggin the many styles you use to create your art!

I put this one down for a bit while I'm working on some other
velvets, but thought I would post where it's at. Will come back to it
soon. Amazing what you can learn from your first velvet painting.
Mostly, what not to do.

Having some fun though.... :)

I'd love to spotlight these Bettie Page pieces!

Hey Bettieblogger,
Thanks for writing. That would be cool!
These two velvets are for the Bettie Page /Olivia
show on Sat. May 2nd in Hollywood. I'm guessing you probably know
that though. Will you be going to it? Let me know. It's
gonna be a fun time! I can send you finished jpegs with the frames

Beeeautifulll!!

Are these new velvets that dark in person or is it just the effect from posting the photos on here?

The one thing I love about velvet paintings is how the colors pop off the canvas because they contrast so brightly with the background.

Are yours more on the darker side?

If so have you thought about adding in more highlights to get a different effect?

I do like your paintings-I like that you are doing more realistic paintings vs. the cartoon drawings you have done in the past. Certainly shows how talented you are tackling both mediums and how you have a great end result.

I was just curious about how the appear in person.

Hi leleliz! Thanks for your comments. I was wondering that too because they look way better and brighter
against the dark bg in person.

I think I've been over-compensating with darkening them in photoshop trying to get the black areas of the velvet dark again thus darkening everything. My camera with/without flash makes it dull and grayish.I Need to ask what others do when they shoot their velvets. So far I can't get them close to how they really look.
Here they are without being fiddled with. Is that too blown out? Everyone's screens are different of course.
Thanks again!

L

Yup those look great!
NOW I can really see them and the contrast is a lot more visible. Not sure if it is my computer that was causing them to be so dark but regardless I am diggning them even more.

Great paintings and thanks for the adjustment!

Cheers leleliz! Great name by the way!
If it's that much better now, then I don't think it's your computer.
Just my lack of photoshop skills. :)
Plus I suck at photoing velvet!
Thanks for the tip!
