Have you unexpectedly met someone famous?

Oh, cruel Sabu.

Okay, er, the Stevie Wonder one. Only because of the monk. Or maybe because it was the funniest one.

More guesses anyone?

The Stevie Wonder one is a bald faced lie. HAHA, where did "bald faced lie" come from anyway? If I'm wrong "I'll have your ass in a sling"

Over many years of construction I have worked for:
Robert Reed
Tony Danza
Dean Martin
George Kennedy
Ann Margaret
Heather Locklear
Pat Sayjak
Martin Lawrence
The Jackson's parent's (Tito visited once)
The Olson twins
Wayne Gretzky
Zubin Mehta
Dwight Yoakum
Sergio Mendes
Mick Mars

I did some work for Daniel Lanois when he built a recording studio at "Theatro", an abandoned movie theater in Oxnard, CA. Very nice guy, produced Peter Gabriel, U2, Neville Brothers, Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Chris Whitley, etc.

Only a couple of surprise sightings:
David Crosby in line for food at La Super Rica Taqueria in Santa Barbara, David Lee Roth at Marie Callendar's in Pasadena, Michael Anthony at Kimo's in Maui, and Graham Nash at Fry's Electronics in Woodland Hills.

Tiki Favorite: Joan Collins at Trader Vic's Beverly
Hills 20+ years ago. She was with a group of small children having a birthday party in a room off the bar........

I'm going for the monk, too. Oh, and Stevie Wonder. But they're ALL outrageous.

I knew Mickey Rourke quite well back in the 80s, first met him in '79 (he was a friend of my Pop's, also an actor), and we became fast friends, I was kinda like his little brother and he looked out for me. But when I went from being his little pal to his flunky, we gradually lost touch. He had kind of an Elvis complex, bought me a '64 T Bird when I was 19, but then wanted me to be one of his "boys" and I wasn't into surviving as a hanger-on, so I moved on (and North). He was a helluva sweet guy in the beginning, but I guess he started to believe and then emulate his tough guy image. Too bad. He's sort of making a comeback now in films like the upcoming "Once Upon a Time in Mexico." He's quite good in "Spun," too. My own favorites are "Rumble Fish" (for which I unsuccessfully auditioned at his behest- I'm a writer, not an actor), "Angel Heart" and "Johnny Handsome" - the last movie he did before he got his own facial makeover. He was always insecure about his looks, even though ironically that was part of his appeal.

Through Mickey I met a LOT of celebrities in the early to mid-80s, including Tom Waits (the nicest and humblest), Sean Penn, Chris Penn, Emilio Estevez, Lance Henriksen (they were best pals at one point, and both took me out to get a hooker in Hollywood one night when I was a virgin teen - I chickened out at the last minute, though), Rutger Hauer, Treat Williams, a bunch of others. He was everyone's idol back then. It was amazing to witness his quick rise to stardom while I remained a bitter busboy. I miss him.

Hey bongofury, I was just thinking about Daniel Lanois yesterday, as I listened to "Wrecking Ball" by Emmylou Harris! Who'da thought an Acadian boy from New Brunswick would go so far? Not surprised to hear he's a nice guy, a real quiet genius, that one.

emspace.

Ok, I obviously can't fool you guys - the false story was the Stevie Wonder fiasco. I actually did see Stevie Wonder at Shrine Lake, but the monk and the static-electric shock are pure fiction.

Johnnie V - The story about "The Bear" is real.. Unless I was actually having lunch with his stunt-double - a distinct possibility, since I'm always getting my chimps confused, (embarassing at Oscar after-parties).

Mickey R's most underated performance was as Chuck Bukowski in Barfly. Great movie!

Dawn - I agree, "Barfly" is a great one, too. I was 'working" for Mick when he did that one, he and Bukowski really hit it off. I forgot to mention "Diner" too, that was pretty good, and also the movie that really sent him over the top after "Body Heat" put him on the map.

Hey Emspace.....Teatro is back to being an abandoned movie theatre, He had removed the seats in the back half and had several huge mixing boards. I sat with him and his assistant, he put an old black and white movie on the screen (no sound)and turned down the lights except the one on a disco ball and played about 20 minutes of instrumental guitar stuff that was increadible (like "Orange Kay" from the Sling Blade soundtrack)Had a bunch of motorcycles and a pool table in the lobby........

I forgot my favorite clebrity run in was with Walt Disney. The family was at Disneyland and we were by the Swiss family Robinson Treehouse that was under construction when he came up to us , shook our hands and introduced himself and asked if we were having a good time and told us about what the treehouse was to be like.

I never met Walt but I did meet Roy Disney one afternoon in So. Laguna on coast hwy, he almost ran down a couple of people in a crosswalk while driving a rented mustang. I introduced myself to him. :)

Oh, and for you Canadians, I also 'met' Captain Highliner... in fact, I picked him. Let me explain. I wrote some Captain Highliner ads a few years ago. We had to cast a new 'Captain' cause the old 'Captain' died, and the guy they used in the meantime for the picture on the fish stick box had a weird high voice that we couldn't use on TV... so we had to find a new Captain.

(For you Americans, it is kind of like the equivlaent of you being in charge of finding the new colonel Sanders... I mean, I grew up watching and mimicking Highliner commercials, it is part of pop culture here... (Ever been to sea Billy?) and all of a sudden I have to pick a new one and write his lines!)

Anyway, we found a guy. And the old 'box' Captain got pissed. And also, if you watch TV closely, you will notice that Captain Highliner also moonlights as the Man from Glad. We had to put a fake beard on him.
I tried for ages to get through a script that involved 'Billy' all grown up and coming back to haunt the captain but Highliner was just too scared of the paedophilic overtones and jokes to go there...

Anyway, I think I have thouroughly blown my work confidentiality agreement, but there you have it. I thought the canucks would be amused.

For the resy of yas, this is all nonsense...

'Arrr... Ever been to sea, Billy?'
'No, But I've been blown ashore a few times!'

Famous person!?! Well, yes I have. A few as a matter of fact! I'm not too far from Nashville and love to visit there. On one trip I ran into Crystal Gayle at the Kroger Grocery Store. Why she was wearing suntan stockings and sandals in the middle of the winter I'll never know. But, she was sweet none the less.

On another visit to Dollywood I was waiting in line for a cherry lemonade (yes, I had vodka in my purse, it's yummy) and I heard a familar voice in the line behind me. Yep, standing just a few feet away from me was Delta Burke. I had no problem asking for an autograph.

My last brush with greatness was with Wynonna Judd. She had a yard sale at her place a few years back. I had to go! Of course none of the clothes would fit me, but I did get some red rhinestone earrings that she had worn on an awards show. As I was about the leave she came out back to sign the headboard of a bed someone bought. She said a few howdy's and went back inside.

That's about all of my stories. Oh, I do have one about Tommy Lee Jones, but I'll keep that to myself.

XXOO,

My sister lives near Nashville and she bought a two story air conditioned DOG HOUSE from W. Judd and turned it into a playhouse for her kids. I'm not kidding.

I met Jerry O'Connell (Sliders, Joe's Apartment, Jerry Maquire) while in Vegas with my mother and sisters for my youngest sister's 21st birthday.

I had a terrible head cold while we were there, so I was hanging out with my mom while my sisters went around to the clubs. Mom and I were in one of the casinos (I don’t remember which one, I’m afraid—we were en route to Treasure Island, but I don’t remember where we were precisely), and I saw Jerry at a table with a whole crowd of people, looking very excited—must’ve been doing well! I got all flustered, and insisted that we lurk for a few minutes, to see if perhaps he broke away so I could say hello. (Being something of a sci-fi geek, I really liked the Sliders series, and had also recently seen and enjoyed Joe’s Apartment.)

After a few moments, he did indeed break away from his group, and I managed to walk up and introduce myself. He was very nice—shook my hand, and said “Pleased to meet you, I’m Jerry”. Silly me, I didn’t say anything bright at all, and instead mentioned that I’d have to tell my boyfriend that I’d met him. He said “Too bad you have a boyfriend” and smiled, and I missed my chance to be swept away into a life of stardom and Hollywood glitter by simply giggling inanely… I hope Tikitronic appreciates the sacrifices I’ve made for him!

I was on vacation years ago in Jackson Hole Wyoming and was bored to tears. As accident prone as I am I decided not to go skiing and instead embarked on a thrifting trip to some antique stores that I saw on our way up.

I was looking in one shop - where I found a Trader Dick's mug - when I saw someone whom I thought was familiar to me. I walked a little closer and realized it was Wilford Brimley. I talked with him for a while and he said he was visiting another celebrity in the area for a week or so.

I also ran into - literally ran into Chris Isaak at one of his shows.

I unexpectedly ran into, and lived on, Lars Ulrich's (Metallica's drummer/manager/despised anti-file sharing zealot) berber carpeting. A couple cottage rentals ago, I lived in a cottage owned by the personal handyman contractor to Lars. Lars had a huge mansion in Tiburon (where all the rock stars hang...) and my landlord had installed some new all-wool, insanely thick & plush off-white carpeting in a room of the manse. Lars returns from touring, doesn't like like it and tells him to get rid of it. He promptly tears it out and uses it to carpet my future bedroom. I have to say, without a lick of sarcasm, that it was the greatest carpet my feet have ever, uh, befelt? Musta cost like $300/sq yard. I didn't adopt any rock star-like behaviours due to my proximity, though.

And to whoever mentioned their sorry experience upon meeting Shag, I second it. Your assessment was dead-on: When I was introduced to him, he looked like I just peed on his shoes, too, and behaved as if I had interrupted him (which I hadn't - I was introduced). You'd think someone with his good fortune, mediocre artistic abilities, & pseudo hipster cred who goes all the way to a remote tiki event to sell his "art" would be a little, I dunno, gracious? Guess not.

This past weekend I went down to Trestles to watch a surf contest and they were running super shuttle vans up and down the hill to the beach. My wife and daughter got in the last seats and the driver asked me if I wanted to sit in the back cargo area. Not wanting to walk up the hill I said sure, and as I climbed in I heard this voice say ,"Hey, got any room for me" and in climbed Wee Man from Jackass who practically sat on my lap all the way up the hill. He was pretty nice and stopped to take pictures and autographs for everyone afterwards. I was there to promote my new clothing line so naturally I gave him a t-shirt and got a picture.

While walking along the concourse at the A's game last Friday night, I noticed that people were smiling and waving at the tall guy in a very well-tailored suit who was walking in front of me. I moved ahead of him to have a better look and recognized him immediately:

It's been nearly a decade since he retired from baseball, and he's still one hell of a beautiful man!

Who have I met?
Well, when I was younger I went to a get-together with close family friends and thier family. I walked in and sat down on the coach to watch TV (that was on). This whiteheaded/bearded man was sitting there and I turned to ask him if he wanted me to change the channel. He asked if a game was on, so I flipped the channels untill I found it. he and I started talking about "stuff" as if I was an old friend. I got up to get us something cold to drink when my mother pulled me a side and informed me I had been talking to "Uncle Jessie" I was like "oh that's his name", she said "No, his name is Denver Pyle, he played Uncle Jessie on that show you loved when you where little." "Dukes of hazard?" "Yes that's it!"
He was a very nice man, I shed a tear when I heard of his passing.

I was at a hotel bar in Dallas when I ran into James Dohan (Scotty from Star Trek). He sat down next to me at the bar and we made small talk. He said he was intown for a Trek convention. Nice man, he sure can hold his "wee bairns" (Star trek refference).

My band, Outhouse Moan, played with the legandary Texas psychedelic band, the Golden Dawn twice. Very nice bunch of guys...good grass.

My college frat brother moved to San Diego a few years ago. One night we went to a goth bar with some friends and bumped into and hung out with his childhood idol. Luke Skywalker.

When I skycapped in Orlando and Miami (87-91), I checked in bags for Ted Kennedy, he was actually very personable, lead singer of Simply Red, Robert Goulet (he had so many LV bags it looked like the scene in Coming To America) I got to know "Ruggs" from Third World, he lived in Orlando and when I moved to Miami he recognized me and gave me a hug, Sam Kinison, he was very cool, he was talkin alot about his feud with "Dice" his brother tipped me, and Sam came back and gave me more, that was very cool of him. Patrick Ewing stiffed me and was a jackass, I should have sent his Lousie Bags to Bangladesh.

Fast forward a few years later (94-95), I traveled in the seminar business and our team was having Thanksgiving dinner at The Beverly Hilton, George Burns, Carol Channing and a group sat next to us and Rodney Dangerfield and his wife sat on the other side of us, it was pretty trippy.

And one of my favorites was checking out of a hotel in New Orleans, I got in the elevator and there were a bunch of High School Band kids in the elevator and another man way in the back, I was hung over like a clown, and all of the sudden I hear this voice ask the kids what they were in town for, it was friggen George Carlin, the kids had absolutely no clue who he was. He knew by my re-action I knew who he was and he was very cool, he has always been a favorite of me and my brother, I couldnt wait to tell him about it.

Oh yeah, I sat in First Class with R.E.M., Henry Rollins, Carrot Top, and Lesly Nielsen, all different flights, but I didnt know R.E.M. was on my flight until we landed and it was Honolulu to Lax, they sat way behind us and kept a low pro. We ran into Mimi from the Drew Carey Show outside The Louve' in Paris and my friend that was with us knew her because her husband worked on the show.

This will probably mean more to Canadians than the rest of you, but I sat next to Margaret Atwood on an airplane between Toronto and Boston. For about half the flight I thought it was someone who looked a whole lot like Margaret Atwood, then I realized it was her and we had a nice chat.

Also stayed at the same Vancouver Island B&B as the lead singer of Midnight Oil (don't know his name - the big bald guy). Had no idea he was a celeb except that they made a fuss over him when he checked out. He's in some of the pictures I took of the place.

I sat in a bar on a small island just of Malta chatting and drinking with a guy at the bar for a good few hours. Eventually he had to leave and the barman asked me if I knew him, I said no that he was just some guy over doing some work, then the barman tells me it was Matthew Modine ( he was over working on Cutthroat Island). Funny it never came up in the conversation as to what he did, and I would have been none the wiser had I not been told

I met Bill Handel (KFI)and I once drove Dave Wakeling (The English Beat/general Public) to the store to get cigarettes during an audition...

This does not really count, becuase it's not "un-expected" but every year I try to go to the NAMM show, where lots of celebreties attend. Two years ago I saw a big commotion over at the Lee Oskar Harmonica booth, and there was Stevie Wonder. He is a pysically imposing, big dude! Needless to say, he did not "see" me....

I also saw Dennis Rodman quite a few times, but heck, who in SoCal hasn't?

saw wolf blitzer getting coffee...

Kid Rock used to come into the record shop where I worked (as did 1000 other local & international musicians; Snoop, Stereolab, etc) Anyway, this was just before his signing to a major and we ended up chatting about his new "Paul" tattoo... Paul was his cousin who had committed suicide and coincidentally, my best friend's college roommate.

Oh yeah, same record shop: my wife, then manager, had to fire employee Marshall Mathers AKA Eminem because he had no car and couldn't get to work on time.

I used to live down the street from B-level Hollywood actor Bill Kennedy. He liked watering his lawn. often.

Saw Jessie James from Monster Garage at SideBoards in seal beach. Also so James Brown 2 years ago in Delta Terminal in Atlanta.

The biggest celebrity I met accidentally was in Long's Drugs. It was about 8:30am and I was picking up some cold medicine when I heard a very familliar voice coming from the prescriptions counter. I recognized his voice right away and instantly started to try and figure out how to meet him. I strolled (not very) casually to the end of the isle and there stood Joe Walsh with his son. As soon as he saw me, he just smiled and said, "hey" like he knew me. Super nice guy (or, maybe he goes unrecognized so much that he likes it when someone finally does).

So, there I am in front of Joe Walsh just trying to think of what the hell I'm going to say. I think it was something really clever like, "I really like your guitar playing". He thanked me and shook my hand, then I just faded back into the isle. Normally, I have no problem asking for autographs, but it didn't feel right with him standing there with his kid.

I found out that he lives about 10 miles from me, so now I carry a copy of "Hotel California" in my car in case I see him again.

I believe that would be Peter Garrett. Wasn't he elected to public office in Australia?

I once met Tone Loc (sp?) at the airport here in Milwaukee. And once I pulled up to a stop light in Chicago and next to me was Joe Walsh in a red Corvette convertable. And once again in Chicago (at The Empty Bottle) I met the lead singer guy from The B52's (Fred something). He was very tall, and very quiet and humble. Somehow I thought he would be way over the top. Oh yeah, I once played pool with the bass player from Smashing Pumpkins, also in Chicago at bar called The Ravenswood Tavern or something like that. I don't remember her name.

Many years ago we were at the Palomino Bar in North Hollywood to see a local band. In comes Jerry Lee Lewis, and he wants to sit in. He gets up on stage and he's playing the grand piano so hard that it is literally bouncing off the ground. Afterwards, he allowed my husband Rick (Krustiki) to take pictures, and then shook hands with everybody. His hands were huge, and hard as a rock. He then said to Rick, "How's it going, Killer." Imagine being called "Killer" by the Killer himself!

my friends, squad five-o, opened up for social distortion earlier this year at the house of blues in anaheim. we were hanging out backstage after the show. they wanted to get a group picture with all of them and social distortion together. so while they were in the process of getting everyone together, i was standing next to mike ness for a while, but was way to nervous to say anything to him. i've been a fan since my early teens and didn't want to sound stupid or say anything dumb, so i just stood there quiet. he seemed like a cool guy though. my parents met mr t at lax about 10 years ago.

Oh, almost forgot: Saw jake Busey right in line in front of me on the matterhorn at Disneyland...talked to him for a few minutes...Extremely tall...liked him as the eco-terrorist in "contact"!

He looks scary, like his dad!!

First one that comes to mind is the famously endowed Ron Jeremy. Naomi and I almost literally bumped into him at LAX, after just arriving a couple days before Oasis IV. Hardly a meeting though - I just kind of pointed and smiled and said "Aaay!" and he smiled back. Couldn't think of much else to say.

Don't know why that comes to mind, other than being the most recent.

Um, Aquarj,

Good thing you didn't bump into him literally, Randy, you might have been impaled!

Well, Formika, how do YOU know who I'm talking about from name only?

And yeah, JT, I'm glad it wasn't LITERALLY a "brush with greatness".

A great place in the San Fernando Valley to bump into famous people is the Honey Baked Ham store in Toluca Lake. Back in the late '80s I ran into Tom Petty & Jeff Lynne eating lunch, and another time I stood in line behind Jonathan Winters as he cracked jokes with the people behind the counter.

Several years ago I used to do side jobs photographing celebrities at movie premieres and parties. (Ok, so I guess that made me paparazzi, but I never shot a celeb outside of public events, and always with their permission.) (And Ok, so you probably expect to see a lot of celebs at a place like that, but I usually didn't care about who they were, I just shot the photos.)

ANYWAY, I was shooting folks coming out of the premiere to "The Saint" (with Val Kilmer) and who did I see unexpectedly but my teen idols Nick Rhodes and Simon LeBon (from Duran Duran) exiting. I did my job and shot a few shots of them, but then started thinking how at age 14 I would've been peeing my pants if the same situation happened. So I handed my camera to a photographer buddy of mine and went over a few steps to where Nick was waiting for his limo. (Simon had already walked down the blocked to his limo.) He obliged me graciously in posing for a photo with me and I thanked him.

"I felt like a little schoolgirl."

I also nearly backed into Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise in an elevator as I was trying to sneak into the Golden Globe Awards after-party.

Then there's seeing Molly Ringwald shopping for vintage clothes in Studio City.

But maybe the best one was having dinner with my best friend at Chin Chin restaurant in Studio City about 11 years ago. We were at a table near the door when Bob Hope, his wife and another elderly couple came in for dinner. Our waiter said he came in often since he lived only about a mile away from there. I got up the nerve to ask him for an autograph and he was very pleasant and still coherent then. I'll always remember the gusto with which he ate his pork spare ribs.

I would probably be peeing my pants NOW if that happened!

Once a Durannie, always a Durannie, I guess. 8)

Andy Partridge of XTC- Working a book store, I turned around and there he was. I offered him some help and asked; "Are you.."
and before I finished the sentence, he said; "Yes." We chatted breifly and I thanked him calmly but profusely for his volume of works.

Slash- A job at a clothing store, he came in with a host of people whose family must have had a tradition of marrying. This one girl was screaming for him to sign her "TIIIIT!" He grimaced and obliged.

I caught his attention and very subtly motined for him to come to the back portion of the store where he could escape.

Once he was back there ( this was when GnR was huge )I asked him if it was like that everywhere he went. With a grimace he said yes. We talked for awhile, I think he was happy that some one was just talking to him like he was a relatively normal person.

The next time he came in he ignaored everybody and we had another good talk. The next time he came in I was on vacation, and he was asking where his "homey" was. Haven't seen him since.

Ian Hunter- Same job. Shorter in person than you'd think. Had to use that cliche. But it is true.

Paul Schafer- Same Job. In his world he is too cool for school. I have a good story about him, a small conceert, and a throat lozenge.

Warren Cucurulo ( Guitarist with Zappa, and Missing Persons ) Installing art at his home. He asked me if I knew how to use a video camera, offering me the job of filming his porno films. Hmmmm, I always wonder how surreal it would have been if I said yes.

Steve Martin- Not unexpected, as it was on the work order. But it was truly bizarre to be prepping some of his artwork for travel, hearing someone stirring coffee, turning around and seeing Steve Martin standing there. It got even more bizarre when he said "Hello" like his character in The Jerk would have.

Ray Davies- On the street, he was pleasant, until he knew we knew who he was. Man he moves fast! We just stood there agog.

Cheetah Chrome (punk rock legend) getting a pizza at Stromboli's in NYC, I looked down and saw Cheetah lying against a wall, his pizza sliding off his plate as he went deeper into the land of nod.

Stephen King- In a record store. Very pleasant man.

Ian Astbury- Record store. Had a good talk with him about the Apollo 17 moon launch. odd eh?

Iggy Pop- Record store, watched him check to see if they had any of his records in stock. The extremely hot for a groupie chick abandoned him, and we watched him search up and down the stret in vain for her. Nobody dumps the Iggster!

Jimmy Kimmel- My parking structure, walked out of my car, there he was.

John Leguizamo- Streets of New York, had a chat about what it was like to do Spawn. He seemed to have enjoyed it even if the public didn't.

Walking to work one day this blond woman was walking her rat sized dog in front of me. With the dog wandering all over the sidewalk, I couldn't get around her and her dog. It was obvious that I was trying to get by, but the lady seemed to think her dog owned the sidewalk. So I hit after burner and just stepped over her dog. It almost got itself stepped on. I turned to scowl at the self important dog owner, only to see a very surprised Debbie Harry. I wonder if she remembered giving me a very approving up and down look at The Rock Styles show at the Met. My wife and her friends were there, and wouldn't stop teasing me that Debbie Harry had given me "The Look".

Nicholas Cage- Clothing store. Came in asking for vintage denim jeans. He proceeded to do karate kicks in various pairs of jeans for the next half an hour. Aside from that we had a pleasnant conversation.

Thats what I recall at the moment. I know I'll remember some more later.

True, true.

Little Oscar - Lakewood Shopping Center, 1962. Got a tour of the Weinermobile, an autographed picture of LO and...the coveted Weinerwhistle. May not seem like much nowadays, but back then it was like meeting Michael Jackson at the Neverland Ranch and being invited to sleep over!
