The best 151 rum?

Pages: 1 36 replies

As a newie, can anyone advise the different qualities of different 151 rums, or is it just the alcohol that's important (if that's not heresy to say).

Lemon Hart is a pretty tasty 151 demerara rum. The "white" 151's seem pretty similar to me. Like you said, the alcohol content is the main thing, and that seems to override any subtle differences among brands. I keep Wray & Nephew's and Bacardi & use Bacardi mostly when pyrotechnic garnishes are called for (i.e., hula bowls, cocoanaut re-entry, etc.)!

I have a hard time finding Lemon Hart 151 in L.A., granted I haven't tried very hard.

Any tips on where to get these lauded best 151 rums as you post reviews will be appreciated.

Grazie,

-M.

They stock both proofs of Lemon Hart at High Time in Costa Mesa, but if you look around you may find the 151 proof in L.A.

Also try Stroh 80 this a 160 proof Austrian Rum......Hallucinations guaranteed..

P

Also Beverage Warehouse in Mar Vista and Vendome in Beverly Hills (@ Olympic & Pine) have Lemon Hart.

DZ

I've also purchased Lemon Hart at Bristol Farms in Redondo Beach. However, often if they are out of stock on something, they claim they don't carry it, so it's best to just check back every so often...

Man, sounds like I'm gonna have to stock up here in Washington before I move down. Hard alcohol is only available here in state-run liquor stores, which mostly sucks, but the upside is that in an effort to keep The People from mandating a change, they keep them pretty darn well-stocked with a lot of variety -- their mandate isn't profits as much as serving the alcohol needs of the people. They even have an online database to help you locate which store has a particular brand in inventory. I've always thought our state-run system sucked, but after hearing how hard it is for you guys to find specific brands, I feel pretty lucky.

HumuBabe, We look forward to your arrival.
WELCOME TO CALI!!

Evil Mastermind, I get my lemon hart at "Liquor Depot" on Saticoy East of the airport in Van Nuys. I have posted the address on TC in the past. The have all kinds of good stuff, at great prices. They even have Fee Brothers Falernum, and Marischino liquor.

Cheers,

I have a friend that goes to jam island a few times a year. They brought back a bottle of what they call overproof. That is what the lable claims and when I opened the bottle it was no lie. It was like the duke boys island style. It is clear, with a strong sweet smell. I have had it with mix usually just a taste and boy it is strong, but yet almost smooth with some kind of background mix of course.

It's probably Wray and Nephew Overproof rum. It's available here in some liquor stores. It's a different flavor than Lemon Hart 151 or Bacardi 151 but makes a great substitute for light rum if you want an extra kick. Or if you can't find Myers' platinum and you want to make a drink that calls for light Jamaican rum (as in some of the recipes in the Don the Beachcomber book).

I bought a bottle of Appleton light rum (also from Jamaica) in Baja last week. Something I have not seen in the U.S. It was only about $15 for a 1 liter bottle.

Hey thanks for the tip! I'm hitting them up next week for a little high-octane recon.

Cheers!

Hi there all,
This thread was started by a Newbie nearly 3-years ago, so here's another Newbie following it up with another 151 question.
First up, a big Hi to everyone and thanks for having me.
I recently ordered and received 2 bottles of 151 from Germany, as here in Ireland where I live you've absolutely no chance of getting anything like that. I received them a few weeks back, one bottle each of Bacardi 151 and Lemon Hart 151.
I've just noticed today that the Lemon Hart 151 is actually Jamaican not Demerara from Guyana.
I know most of the normal Lemon Hart sold in Europe is actually Jamaican, but the website in Germany I ordered from had it advertised as Lemon Hart 151 Demerara.
So can anyone tell what the story is with this particular bottling, is it rare, only sold in Germany/Europe - hard to get in the States !
Please let me know
Thanks and bestwishes.

There's appleton light rum at Hi Times in Costa Mesa, too.
Just saw it last night. Don't remember how much it was.

Yep. The Lemon Hart Jamaican rums are pretty much impossible to find over here. I don't suppose that's much consoloation if you're after Demerara, but that's the only Lemon Hart I can find. Maybe they just mixed up your bottles?

I have been unable to find Lemon Hart 151 in San Diego (although Trader Mort's does carry Lemon Hart 80 proof). Right now I have a bottle of Potter's 151 for when I'm making a drink that calls for overproof -- it's cheap, and it has less of a gasoline taste than Bacardi. It seems to work fine for the drinks I like. I'm still keeping an eye out for the real deal, though.

Hi, DrMiguelito - you may want to try Trader Mort's again for Lemon Hart 151. I picked up a bottle three or four weeks ago and have seen it there several times in the past year or so. It should be right next to the 80. I don't know how much they order at a time, so it could be that they were unfortunately just out of stock when you visited. Good luck!

Hi Squad. Welcome to TC! From everything I've heard, Lemon Hart's Jamaican rums are quite good and a fine addition to your bar. Unfortunately, due purely to marketing decisions, their Jamaican rums are not available in the States. But their Demerara rums are and they are among my absolute favorites. If you can get your hands on them, do so.

I'm bad today.

Lemon Hart Demarara regular and 151 proof are readily available at a terrific place in the San Fernando Valley called Wine & Liquor Depot (at Balboa & Saticoy). They have THE most impressive selection of booze I've seen.

Hi TikiJosh/GatorRob,
Thanks for the replies, I just got the reply to inform me the Lemon Hart they had advertised was only available as the Jamaican 151. So it seems the Demerara 151 is even harder to get in Europe as it is in the States, and things have just taken a turn for the worse - since 23rd November 2006 Alcohol cannot be sent mail-order between EU countries, this has not been strictly enforced as of yet, but I'd hate to find out the hard way.
I'm going on a Liqueur finding trip to Hamburg in February, there seems to be great supplies of Marie Brizard 'Orange Curacao' & 'Apry' and everything else in the Creme De ... range for fairly cheap prices and lots more.
The only other 151 that springs to mind that's exclusively available in the UK (I think) is the Gosling's Dark 151, I wonder how that fairs out compared to the Lemon Hart, a bit pricey as far as I can remember.
Cheers.

Squad 701,
I think there's some 151's on the following websites;

Kon-Hemsby,
Hi, Neither of those sites sell the Lemon Hart Demerara 151, one of them has the Jamaican version of the Lemon Hart 151. The Bacardi 151 sells for huge prices when available in the UK, it can be got in Germany for 1/2 the price or even less.
Cheers.

Squad,
Have you ordered from Germany in the past? If so was that via a website?

Considering how good the standard Gosling's Black Seal is, I imagine that the 151 is pretty good too. It is available in the states, I've seen it in stores but not bought a bottle. I did find the Lemon Hart 151 at the Lee's Discount Liquors warehouse for $19 a bottle. The regular Lemon Hart was the same price.

Chris

I'll join the slew of people asking where any of the Lemon Hart rums can be found. Since I live in PA (Where the state-run stores don't carry it and shipping alcohol direct-to-customer is illegal), any leads would help. Pretty much any state adjacent to western PA (i.e. Ohio, Maryland, West Virginia) would work.

Hi Kon-Hemsby,
Yes i've ordered drink online from Germany before, that's where I got my 151s from.
But they were the 2 most common in Europe (mainland anyhow) Bacardi 151 and Lemon Hart(Jamaican) 151.
The Lemon Hart (Demerara) 151 is a bit trickier to get online in Europe, yet plenty of specialist shops in Germany have it, as well as Appleton 151 (dark) and Bermudez 151 (blanco) Dominican Republic.
In the UK it's possible to order the following online : Goslings 151, Appletons 151 (blanco), Cruzan 151, Mezan 151 and Bacardi 151.
I'm off to Germany in a couple of weeks to stock up, looking forward to visiting Trader Vics in Hamburg.
Cheers.

Hi all,
Just noticed that the Lemon Hart Jamaican overproof rum has no place in this thread as it's not 151,
it's actually 146 (73%) an imposter :) and a very tasty one at that.

Hi everyone! Two questions:

Some friend of mine is going to NYC, so I thought maybe she can bring me some Lemon Hart 151 Demerara, because the one I can find here is the Jamaican one. Any NY fellow knows any store where it can be found?

And the second one. I guess the answer is "absolutely NOT!", but anyway I have to ask: Does the Lemon Hart Jamaican Overproof stuff can act as a substitute for the Demerara? The fact is that a lot of recipes call for Demerara 151, but since in Europe one cannot find it, man, that's tough. It's a hard thing trying to make that drinks in Europe.

Thanks,

BS

I've found Lemonhart 151 as well as many different types of rums, scotches, tequilas.... at the Wine and Liquor Depot in Van Nuys. So far I haven't been disappointed!

S

Just found this thread on a search and it's nearly answered my question, but is there anyone who can help a bit further?
Last week i was lucky enough to have a local liquor store import a heap of rums from Europe for me,which i am not able to get in this country.
Two questions.
1)One of them was an El Dorado overproof(i can get every other El Dorado available except this one),which is white/clear,63a.b.v,and from Guyana.Has anyone tried this before and how does it compare to Lemon Hart? The only other overproof rums i can get are Bacardi 151 and Inner Circle(Australian made).
2)I was also able to get my hands on a couple of bottles of Lemon Hart(which i've been chasing for about two years now),and was a bit disappointed to find that it is the Jamaican style.I really wanted the demerara rum so i could make Beachbum Berry's recipes as described. How different are the two types of Lemon Hart?
Cheers
swizzle

I have the same problem. Here in Europe it's impossible to get Lemon Hart from Demerara, because here they distribute the Jamaican (which is great), so I use El Dorado when a recipe calls for Demerara. And if it calls for Demerara 151, i Use the 80-proof anyway, because although you don't get the "punch" that an overproof rum gives you, at least you have the Demerara flavor.

But you're lucky if you got the El Dorado overproof, I didn't knew about it! I'll have another look at my liquor store.

Hi,can you tell me the web adresses to those speciality shops that has the Lemon Hart Demerara? I live in Sweden and cannot find it here.

I have seen a Lemon Hart advertised as 151 demerara at spirituosen-superbillig.com but isn`t that the Jamaican 151?

S7

Hi there,
not much available at the moment unless you have friends going to Hamburg, Germany. as the shop will not ship outside Germany due to new EU regulations which don't seem to be enforced just yet.
But not to worry - online at the moment, Spiritousen has the Lemon Hart 151 Demerara (Guyana) 75.5%,
I've got it here myself in the past, notice the different label, the Jamaican 73% Lemon Hart has the same label as the Jamaican 40% (pictured just before that).
Best wishes.

Squad 701

I was lucky to find it on the German Ebay yesterday and they ship to Sweden.
It was the shop Spirituosen&Wine that had it, is that the same shop you are talking about?
What is this new EU Regulation? It has recently been clear that people in Sweden now legally can buy spirits from other EU countries..

Is it true bargoyle bought up all the LH 151 at Blanchards in Allston? they have none! i cant find that brand anywhere in boston...tips?
