Long time no carvings!

Keep going Seeks, it looks like you are doing a fine job. Hopefully he will be even better for having the botched stain job. I'm looking forward to seeing him all fixed up.

Beautiful work so far...Did the same thing on a recent tiki by trying to
"hurry up" the finishing process...had to re-sand the whole damn thing.
It's gonna look great.

You have more patience than I do. I would have improvised something other than resanding. Man, I hate sanding!! Looks good and the next time - take your time.

Could you put some Mustard or Catsup next to him? I really can't tell how dark he was without a reference. I really don't think dark was bad on him. I got used to seeing those little black gods from Hawaii as a kid, so I'm kinda partial to the dark stuff. Like A-1.

JonnyP - I really had no choice it was a bad A-1 mess.

Thin Man suffered a ankle fracture i might have to put
a pin in. All the weight is up top and the
little angle cracked. I have a new guy going also I will
call him Chubby Boy for now.

This did not look too bad to me. I am wondering what you expected? I liked the way it turned out, too bad that you broke the ankle of the thin man after all. It is sad to see. Hope you manage it.

A Couple Dowels and some good glue and he will be BETTER than New, as he will have that extra ankle support not originally included. It's all part of carving
repairing.
Beautiful tiki anyway and the Fat Boy is not looking bad either!

Looks like the Thin Tiki will need some rest and recuperation, I'll
carve him some crutches if you send him to Wisconsin.

tok-tok - The picture don't show the stain well. Its was
nasty wet and clumpy. Hopefully i will show you what I'm looking
for on the stain when I'm done.

GMAN - The damage ankle seems to be holding well.
I'm thinking of going with a small dowel from behind just for
a little insurance.

Benz - Its looking like i did the same thing on the Fat Boy with
the ankle being the week point.

congatiki - Thin Man is getting there its just slow going.

Well, you might try getting some weight off the head and upper bode before you take the ankles down. They can Always be a weak point. I have busted More than a few myself too!

Its been a steep learning carve for me this last month.
Benz just gave me a heads up on last post.

I dropped fat boy and that's all it took CRACK!
I say he's around 300 lbs he is still fairly wet.
(silly me i need to be more careful)

I glued him with Elmer's Nano glue and plan on using
5/8 or 3/4 " oak dowels. I also bought some aluminum rod
but will probably not use them. I still have meat to remove
and I'm scared of sanding into them?

Benz or Anybody with experience what type of glue and types of pins
have you used? with what effects or results. Info for now and the
future. He is 6' around 300 lbs right
now.

THAT my friend, is one of the finest pieces I've seen on TC in a loooong time! IMO.

I feel your pain with the cracking ankles/legs. My skinny little ankles feel like they're going to crack under the pressure of my excessively large head all the time :lol:

Really Excellent looking tiki and I'm with Howland in that it's one of the Finest tikis shown on TC for a long time. The next one looks to be as good or better. Broken legs, No Big deal as long as you doweled them with any hardwood dowels and used a good wood glue. What kind of wood is this? It actually looks like it is Spaulted, or has a beautiful fungus growing in it. That makes the wood Beautiful but can weaken it considerably. I have been known to "Dowel" weak looking legs/ankles/arms before they have a chance to break and if I were you I would do this on your second tiki as well. that way there are no surprises down the road.

Nice save there, and some great progress work. Maybe switch up your work and go from head to toe next time to lighten the load.

Either way you've got a great grasp of the 3D!

Benz - Mohalo The wood is red alder grown in a bog. So
that's what the white streaking is fungus. The wood that sits in the bog
and rots glows in the dark its really cool.

Lake - Thanks much, right now bottom up works for me. I'm scared of
running out of wood at the bottom. I have seen Benz half at a time
pic's?

Hey there. I was really bummed about the break. Nice recovery....He's a really nice piece of art, and I'm glad he was able to be rescued.

I'm going to keep playing with stain colors maybe a dark one next time?
Mini wax cherry on the headdress and base and
natural on body with 3 coats of toung oil.
