Keep going Seeks, it looks like you are doing a fine job. Hopefully he will be even better for having the botched stain job. I'm looking forward to seeing him all fixed up.

I thinks you needs longer drying times.....

-G

Beautiful work so far...Did the same thing on a recent tiki by trying to
"hurry up" the finishing process...had to re-sand the whole damn thing.
It's gonna look great.

You have more patience than I do. I would have improvised something other than resanding. Man, I hate sanding!! Looks good and the next time - take your time.

S

Mahalo GMAN, congatiki and AlohaStation.

My enthusiasm level is not very high at the moment.
I hope i learn my lesson.

H

Well? Any updates?

S

Heathbar - just about done with the stain removal.
Then i will dry him out some and sand some more hueww!

Good luck !

Benjamin.

Could you put some Mustard or Catsup next to him? I really can't tell how dark he was without a reference. I really don't think dark was bad on him. I got used to seeing those little black gods from Hawaii as a kid, so I'm kinda partial to the dark stuff. Like A-1.

J

I'm with Aloha, I hate sanding. You must have incredible patience, I thought it looked great before.

S

benella - Mahalo i will need it.

Uncle Laffo - I'M gun shy on the dark stain right now.
The A-1 was funny :)

JonnyP - I really had no choice it was a bad A-1 mess.

Thin Man suffered a ankle fracture i might have to put
a pin in. All the weight is up top and the
little angle cracked. I have a new guy going also I will
call him Chubby Boy for now.

T

Hi Seek, and a happy new one.

I liked the stain-job you did.

This did not look too bad to me. I am wondering what you expected? I liked the way it turned out, too bad that you broke the ankle of the thin man after all. It is sad to see. Hope you manage it.

Medic....MEDIC! Tiki down...TIKI DOWN!!!!

You'll get him all squared away...I know you. If not he can lean on the new guy...

Hail to the new Fat-Boy!
rehab for slim-bob.

B

A Couple Dowels and some good glue and he will be BETTER than New, as he will have that extra ankle support not originally included. It's all part of carving
repairing.
Beautiful tiki anyway and the Fat Boy is not looking bad either!
Excellent works.

C

Looks like the Thin Tiki will need some rest and recuperation, I'll
carve him some crutches if you send him to Wisconsin.

S

tok-tok - The picture don't show the stain well. Its was
nasty wet and clumpy. Hopefully i will show you what I'm looking
for on the stain when I'm done.

GMAN - The damage ankle seems to be holding well.
I'm thinking of going with a small dowel from behind just for
a little insurance.

surfintiki - right on!

Benz - Its looking like i did the same thing on the Fat Boy with
the ankle being the week point.

congatiki - Thin Man is getting there its just slow going.

B

Well, you might try getting some weight off the head and upper bode before you take the ankles down. They can Always be a weak point. I have busted More than a few myself too!
Still Lookin' Good.

S

Its been a steep learning carve for me this last month.
Benz just gave me a heads up on last post.

I dropped fat boy and that's all it took CRACK!
I say he's around 300 lbs he is still fairly wet.
(silly me i need to be more careful)

I glued him with Elmer's Nano glue and plan on using
5/8 or 3/4 " oak dowels. I also bought some aluminum rod
but will probably not use them. I still have meat to remove
and I'm scared of sanding into them?

Benz or Anybody with experience what type of glue and types of pins
have you used? with what effects or results. Info for now and the
future. He is 6' around 300 lbs right
now.

Mohalo

H

THAT my friend, is one of the finest pieces I've seen on TC in a loooong time! IMO.

I feel your pain with the cracking ankles/legs. My skinny little ankles feel like they're going to crack under the pressure of my excessively large head all the time

Keep up the awesome work.

S

Howland - Thanks for the complement.

Thin Man is close to being done Pictures soon.

My new guy is coming along OK. His seems to stronger than
ever. He has some tipsy angle to him but i think
it will give him character.

Well done Kook! Now, lay him down so as to relieve the sheer stress on the uncarved to carved weight disparity, and finish the bulk removal while being careful not to turn him in angst.

Nice form so far.

T

Seeksurf - Sorry about all the ankle problems on your carvings but I really appreciate you posting the pictures and the fixes! I hope I'm learning some good lessons here. Btw, they look fantastic!

Really Excellent looking tiki and I'm with Howland in that it's one of the Finest tikis shown on TC for a long time. The next one looks to be as good or better. Broken legs, No Big deal as long as you doweled them with any hardwood dowels and used a good wood glue. What kind of wood is this? It actually looks like it is Spaulted, or has a beautiful fungus growing in it. That makes the wood Beautiful but can weaken it considerably. I have been known to "Dowel" weak looking legs/ankles/arms before they have a chance to break and if I were you I would do this on your second tiki as well. that way there are no surprises down the road.

Seek,

Nice save there, and some great progress work. Maybe switch up your work and go from head to toe next time to lighten the load.

Either way you've got a great grasp of the 3D!

Good luck on this piece as you bring it on home!

McTiki - Thanks I'm keeping him horizontal as much as possible.

TheBigT - I hope someone gets something out of the info. I'm prone
take the long way home.

Benz - Mohalo The wood is red alder grown in a bog. So
that's what the white streaking is fungus. The wood that sits in the bog
and rots glows in the dark its really cool.

Lake - Thanks much, right now bottom up works for me. I'm scared of
running out of wood at the bottom. I have seen Benz half at a time
pic's?

R

Hey there. I was really bummed about the break. Nice recovery....He's a really nice piece of art, and I'm glad he was able to be rescued.

Robin - Thanks ya he will be OK.

I'm going to keep playing with stain colors maybe a dark one next time?
Mini wax cherry on the headdress and base and
natural on body with 3 coats of toung oil.

GMan - Thanks for the help and encouragement.

Tikis lined up at the Tiki Bog.

Coast trip last weekend razor clam dig.

Turned out awesome seeks!!!

Nice work Seeker, you are really stepping it up with your carving.
The thin man is very cool, wish you could have gotten the ankles a
little skinnier!

SEEKS! Sweet chops man! Your carvings are getting super complex and super beautiful. What an ordeal with the Thin Man, eh? You pushed through it though, and you have a wonderful sculpture to be very, very proud of. How great is this?!!!! I am so pumped for you!

-G

Man, that Thin Man came out great. Love the 2-tone stain job. What happened to the other guy you started??

Like I said,,,, 2-tone staining kicks that a$$. That piece turned out spectacular, Seeks. U da man.

Wow, that learning curve was incredibly fast. FANTASTIC work, I'm really looking forward to trying some harder woods than the sabal palm we have so much of.

Thanks a million for sharing your trials and tribulations. Reading through this thread really brought me a lot of pointers that I can carry with me to the next carving sessions.

The pieces look very symetrical, and like you were in control of any unforeseen situations. Great works!

B

"thin man" is top shelf
Beautiful work with the stain

Way to bring it on home seek! Yea... look at that learning curve... from newbie to seasoned vet in just a few tikis.
Letsee some more!

B

AlohaStation - glad you like the 2-tone.

FreddieBallsomic - Im happy with the 2-tone.

Tampatiki - Thanks yes trials and tribulation

benella - thanks buddy took some time for sure.

Lake - your making me feel cocky with your statement.

Benz - thanks for your insight I keep thinking about your
sujestion on extra pin for thin man every time i move him.

Mooneytiki - thanks alittle taste of what im working on bellow.

Taitiki - thanks much.

Go cat go!

Your grasp once again of the 3-D form of the Kona Style tiki is just sick man. Were you a sculpture major or something?

Good luck on this one, but careful with the ankles!

WOW Seeks, I really like the face on this guy so far! WOW!!

S

Lake - Thanks, the 3D doesn't come easy i have to really dig it out.
High School art was it:)

tikifreak - He is coming along OK. Looking FWD to bring the mouth
and face out. I really wanted to do a Benzart inspired Lono,
but I ran out of head space awhile ago.

R

Hey...didn't even get to post on Thin Man yet, and here's this one! Even better and bigger! Really glad he made it, and no signs of a break that I can see. Nice bog line up too, looks like fun.

Thanks benella, Clarita and Robin for the comps

I'm still having a blast carving. A few shots of the larger guy.

Having some numbness in the tips of my fingers from carving
