Aloha,

After seeing all the great inspiring art in person for the
Tiki Magazine release party at Damon's on Nov. 21, I want to join in!
So here is the first from me. More to come...
Mahalo!

Cute and wonderful!

FLUFF should hire you immediately (if they haven't already).

More please!

T

The girl is wonderful which is the hardest part to nail down. The tiki looks to be modeled from a $ store tiki.

Thanks!

Guess my day job is spilling into
my tikiing.

Thanks Teakey!

I actually used a photo I took recently of a big tiki
outside of that general store in Hana, Maui for reference.

LOL! I knew it! I dig your work and have a great display of Fluff's tropical women's accessories, luggage tags and greeting cards at Freaky Boutiki in Mission Beach.

Very popular with wahine of all ages.

So what's the scoop? Is there a Claudette? Are there several artists? Won't you please share some of your process. How about a tour of your rough sketchbook??? Pretty please?! - Hodaddy

[ Edited by: hodadhank 2008-11-27 12:12 ]

Rock on! Thanks for carrying our fluff stuff! Glad to hear it's popular. I've seen your ads in Tiki Magazine. Are you the owner of the store? We will definitely stop in for a visit and some shopping on our next road trip to San Diego!

So Here's the scoop: Yes, there is a Claudette. She is a super talented
renaissance woman (artist,musician,dancer,etc...) and an exotic French
Tahitian South American Syrian beauty to boot! Also, the love of my life! Fluff is our company and we are the only artists, she being the big cheese, and me, her left hand man. Claudette started Fluff and then I joined in a little while later. We kinda work well together, 5 years later 24/7 and we haven't killed each other yet!

O.K. I think I can dig up some process rough sketches and stuff.
Might take awhile to scan in. Or maybe start from now going forward.
I can promise you they won't be pretty!

Mahalo!

Aloha!
It's been a little longer than I wanted in posting something
new. I recently purchased some velvet downtown, but alas
with the holidays.....anyway, I did manage to make a study of
what I might be painting in my first exploration into the dark side.
Wish me luck!
Mahalo!

The study looks good - enjoy the fun of the Black Fuzz.

Belated welcome to TC. Beautiful velvet, nice website too. All your girls have a sexy yet innocent look to them.

Mahalo Robb!
Velvet is stretched and ready to go!
Time to dive into darkness.
See you on the other side....

Cheers MadDogMike!
Thanks for the feedback and for checking out
the site.

Aloha,

Here is a revised version I think I
like a little better.
Working on some velvets, not ready yet.
I will post soon.

"I'm not bad. I'm just drawn that way." Grrrrrrr....

Thanks MadDogMike and Dano!

Here is a progress shot of my next one.
Needs more fine tuning and stuff.

I love your style Iokona Ki'i, my I don't think I could convince my wife to hang your velvets in the house :)

Thanks MDM!

Here it is finished...I made a b/w jpeg.
For some reason the color jpeg is all soft and blurry,
even at 300 dpi.
Will fiddle with it and post the color version soon...

Mahalo!

Aloha!

I fixed it so the color version is not as blurry
as before. Now it's too clear... :)

[ Edited by: Iokona Ki'i 2009-03-04 10:02 ]

Something seems inconsistent; the back, breast, and right arm are blurry and everything else is in focus.

Gonna be great soon tho' :)

Hi Iokona,
Can you believe, I finally posted!
Wow this piece is coming along great!
So sexy and mysterious.
Can't wait to see it finished.

xo

Hulita Lulita

I'm totally digging your art here, and can't wait to see what you've got coming up next.

Hula Lula!
It's about time longtime lurker!
Glad you like my piece.
Looking forward to seeing your creations
on here soon...

I agree MadDogMike. I wanted it to be a little
soft, but I kinda put maybe too much detail in the
tiki which throws her off some. Will try to fix without
overworking it...which I have a tendency to do.

Thanks for diggin my stuff so far TIKIMan77!

I've been doing art that is cartoony based since leaving
art school for quite a few years. Whether for work or for shits and giggles. It's my
favorite stuff to do. But, after seeing some of Leeteg's and Tyree's
masterpieces in person along with some others, I want to try my hand at doing
some velvets and drawings influenced by them that are not cartoon
based.

So with that being said, I'm going to post some of quick sketches
and studies everyday, have a Mai Tai or 4 everyday :) -- just to get loosened up before diving into darkness.
Here is my first attempt at a sketch. More to come...

Mahalo,

Lookin Great Iokona Ki'i!

the cartoony hula girl has a perfect figure! :P

the leetag style is killer too...keep pushing that light!

alohas, t

Mahalo Dano!...here's another sketch.

Thanks BigToe! Nothing like cartoony shaped
woman! You should know!

O

wow, what a beautiful piece, is that grease crayon on black paper? More of these!

Cheers OceaOtica, thanks for your comments.
Just got the Tiki Mug book and your work is stellar!
Congrats! Yes, I'm using oil pastels aka greasy crayons.
Pretty fun way to loosen up while sketching.

Thought I would do some in progress shots. Really enjoyed
the ones I've seen on here. Usually forget to do it myself, just race
to get something done. I'll try to be better...:)
Here is the first one...

Next couple of progress shots...more to come!

You need to stay with these crayons for awhile!

Love the "play-by-play" pixs. You're doing great at this new style of yours, looks nice and vintage - but don't give up the "cartoony" stuff, it's cool too.

T

Wow, these are great! More progress pics please. :D

RH

Love the luminosity! Very nice work, I wanna see more, please.

Much Mahalos for the kind comments! I forgot how much fun crayons
were! Here's the next one, getting closer to finishing it...

Thanks 4WDtiki! I was hoping to capture some glowing intensity.
Appreciate your comments MDM. More cartoony stuff will make its way
here for sure.
Hello Tikipaka! Cheers for your feedback!
Thanks Mr. Robb "Gustiki Doriki" Hamel! Hopefully I'm learning something
from your insightful thread!

D

WOW! Turning out great! Love em!

Mad skills with the Crayolas!

Aloha MadDogMike, Little lost tiki, Grog, Dano, and Tikimango!
Many Mahalos for the generous comments.

Here's the next progress shot,I didn't get a chance to do too much
but I'll finish it tomorrow.

Next stop Black Velvetville!

D

Ooooooo . . . so nice!

So does the missus let you bring in a model for these paintings or do you just have to wing it? I was doing a small nude sculpture and I had to buy a cheap Barbie to use as a model

what a coinkydink! I too am using a cheap Barbie as a model! :D
Actually, I'm working from different reference materials. From
old postcards and pictures to my own photos. The cartoony stuff
is made up but I might use some references for poses, BG's, plants, etc...
The missus is quite an exotic beauty so hopefully I can get her to don
a grass skirt, lei, and a pareo too!

Speaking of pareos, here's my next progress sketch shot. If I do a velvet
of this it won't be this colorful. Just playing around...
Mahalo for looking!

Nearly finished....

Looks great, very similar to the last one. Good luck with the velvet, it seems daunting.
