Seeks, I don't really give advice because I don't really have room to talk since I'm a newbie too but I think you should go with a tongue also! I know you like the Hawaiian carvings and thought you might be set up to tweak out a tongue like this one?? Just a thought???

Craig

B

Yeah, You may be a Newbie 'round these parts but you Aren't any Noobie to carving. EXCELLENT Headdress and the Whole tiki is about as excellent, top-shelf as it can get! Come on in and Stay awhile!

S

Thanks surintiki, Johnnyp, tikifreak, Gman and Benz glad you like.

tikifreak - not a problem with the tongue advice thanks for the pic's

G - you started this tongue thing!

Benz - Wow! thanks a ton i was feeling pretty good about your top-shelf comment.

Not the best looking tongue but im pleased with him overall.

That headress turned out great!! Did you have any close calls with chipping when you got towards the bottom points of it? Beautiful stuff~

Georgeous carving, absolutely beautiful. I love the helmet look of the tiki, makes me think of Hawaiian style helmets

Seeks,

Look as some of BenZart's Hawaiian pieces on his last thread. He did several with freaking killer tongues. If I can, I'll link a few to your thread. I just need the time to find 'em. You have the wood to do it there and I thinks you shouldz!

Maybe Benz can flik up some pics for ya?

-G$

H

excellent piece.

S

G - I will go back and look for Benz tongues. I have the real-estate up top
but the mouth area behind the tongue is not there. Many Thanks im looking
into it more.

FreddieBallsomic - For sure the ends tried to go with the grain and chip
the ends. Then i saw the bottom of the headdress and how thin it gets and
said hum I'm gonna have to taper them down. Great learning for me.

Robin - More tongue! seems you learned about longer green tongues earlier than
I.

hewey - Right on! thanks. hewey lets trade Continent's for a while I need some
Rightous Surf Time.

Benjamin - Many thanks my friend We need a update from you? You been playing
with those big logs?

hiltiki - thanks for checking him out.

G - Right On! Ok I'M looking and thinking.
No meat on the side but I could round it more like
benz in the front. Last week I spent a good 30 min thinking on
the mouth and tongue and chose to hollow it out, next
tiki will have a proper tongue.

Thanks for time and effort G

B

Your last picture shows that your work is cleaner than clean !
Hats off.

Yes well, those Maori tongues are pretty compelling....serious business in NZ. Your carving is just beautiful, and rounding that tongue IMHO will be the perfect solution.
Are these really your first carvings?

As a sidebar...in Tibet, they stick their tongues out at first meeting to show you that their tongues are NOT green...that they're not the devil (who has a green tongue), but a friend. And you're supposed to do it back for the same reason. It could make for a tricky cross cultural experience.

S

Robin - Mahalo. I love the Tibet tongue story. I need
to get going on the study of Oceanic art and culture.

Yes, these really are my first carvings glad you like.

ben - Mahalo I think you just saw a cleaner side?

S

I'm think I'm done. I'm looking and testing stains on him.
Mahalo every body on TC for keeping me stoked to carve.
I had a blast carving Thin Man.

C

Wonderful work, I love everything about it.

J

I can see you are done sanding, it is as smooth as a babies bottom. I'd like to see all the other carvings you did to get to this state of perfection.

Hell, Yeah!! He is a Bad MaaFa'er. That mouth and headress is SiiiicK. Beautiful~~~~ fBalls

Trade continents? You're on if you leave me one of your tikis! :D This looks awesome all smoothed out. I cant wait to see it stained!

B

Yep, Thin Man is One Special Dude and I think you did a excellent job on him,,,No, WAIT, There are MAjor issues! I think I MAY be Able to Save him For YOU, just send him down here to me and I'll get right on it as soon as possible. Yes I THINK I can fix him for you, Trust ME!

B

I'm very impressed with your work my friend.
How did you sand it in the sneaky parts ? With an angle grinder ?
What stain will you put?

Nice work,

Benjamin.

S

Mahalo ya-all.

McTiki - No thank you Sir: glad you like.

congatiki - Thanks: Tiki penguen is a great idea! I will have to
carve a frog or a duck.

JohnnP - Thanks, i don't know about perfection but I'm getting better.
Every carving i have done is on this post p. 1 and 3.

FreddieBallsomic - Thanks Bro just read your post, Nice. You have
a way with words you sound like a cool dude.

hewey - I just might take you up on that offer.

Benz - Happy Happy Happy, you make me smile the widest and the longest.

ben - no angle grinder just tedious workout on the finger and hand
tendons.

I'm glad you asked about stain. I don't have a clue yet? I have placed
test stains on the back. bombay mahogany and antique walnut. I
really like all of the darker stain i have seen here on TC
but i don't have a clue what they are? I have to put a poly clear coat
over it because it will spend allot of time under the elements.

I really dig the look of 2 different stains...Check AlohaStation's Cannibal. I like using Golden Oak for the body and using RedMahogany mixed with a lil' ZAR 122 Mediterranean Stain.. The 2-tone really pops! Cant wait to see this guy done-up.

I would be glad to help. Just send him to me and I'll get around to finishing him in a few years. This guy is excellent. Your lines are so crisp and clean. There are so many ways to finish something this nice - from simple to complex. I wish I could give you some tips - just remember that simple stains can have a very strong impact and Natural color is sometimes just as beautiful. Good Luck. Can't wait to see the NEXT one.

S

Gman - me bad, i went threw and replied to everyone down the list
and somehow left you off I'm filling like a dumb-a#%

G - thanks for your help I would have had a tooth not a tonge
without your help Bro. YOU the MAN with a G before it.

test MinWax Red Mahogany #225!!!!

3 coats.

[ Edited by: GMAN 2007-12-04 08:48 ]

B

Hats off for the work of sanding !
For te stain I'd say as G$.
Wathever you put it will be a masterpiece.

Ben.

T

This tiki is absolutely great. I would not leave it outside, it could be stolen.

Sorry, I would like to help you on your desicion, but stains in in germany are slightly different from those in the U.S.. We don´t have Minwax here.

Gman's right! Red Mahogany is a beautiful thing. Can't go wrong. How did ya hold up to the XXL storm out there?

S

G - its #225 just put a coat on this morning.
Man i thought i sanded the poo out of Thin Man but
that stain shows all.

ben - bonjour your the best thanks

tok-tok - yes the out side thing will be in the summer
I have a concrete base in the ground and will chain thin man
and surftiki up. but if someone really has a hard-on they
will find a way to steal them. Im still thinking about the best way
to go about it?

surfintiki - #225 is already on
The big wind storm was constrained at the coast and somewhat
inland. Lots of flooding going on. Swell 25' @ 15 sec today
don't get how the 15 sec got in there? Cal should see some fine surf.

GMAN posted on Tue, Dec 4, 2007 7:10 PM

Seeks,

You can also mix a mahogany stain with a bit of ebony for a darker look. Try the multiple coats of 225 and then, after it is dry, apply multiple coats of Watco rejuenating oil. Keep it dust free, and it will look crazy nice. You can also re-apply the oil several times a year to treat the wood (after cleaning all dust off).

-G$

S

Right On G, you read my mind. I was fretting about the top coat.
I coverd surf tiki with a poly whats bad about poly?

G
GMAN posted on Wed, Dec 5, 2007 4:35 AM

Seeks,

The oil has a softer luster, the feel is great, and you can continue "treating" the wood with it over the years. Poly can crack, bubble, and other ugly things. With the oil you can touch up stain in new dents and dings and also get pigment into any new cracks that may form and then apply more oil. I'm not big on the glazed donut look that so many poly or varnished tikis get. I guess its just my preference. I think it gives pieces an older and more authentic look.

-G$

S

G, your the best mahalo. Ya, I'm sold on the oil and i haven't even tried it yet.
But if I think about it fine furniture and antiques would not be polyed they
would be loved with oil and rub.

Yeah G that is some good info, that I needed! I'll be trying that in the future.
I like poly for some stuff though, 'cause I think it protects from UV/rain etc better, not so important, if it's the indoor tiki variety. Although I'm always anxious to seal it with poly, to seal in any residual moisture, to prevent any future cracking. This is a good topic!

Take G's advise!! If you want take a look at the tang I did (page 14), It has a couple coats of the Minwax red mahogany 225 with the WATCO rejuvenating oil. The color might look differant on your wood though, the one I did was oak.

I used 225 (mixed with a touch of ebony) and oil on this guy.....

-G

S

surfintiki - I will have to update this topic next year.
Both surftiki and thin man will spend some time under the damp
coast air.

tikifreak - #225 looks great on your oak! Mine wood is definitely more
absorbent.

G - I was pretty sure those beauty's had some #225
My alder is sucking in the stain big time especially
on the horizontal cuts its dark dark. Im thinking the oil
will bring it to life.

I might go back and sand some areas im not pleased with.

S

G - Forgot, Im thinking Watco rejuvenating oil exterior?

Aloha,

I've got the same problem on a few carvings, I think it is a problem of sanding but I'm really not sure, so I'll follow the progress of it very carefully.

And by the way, don't forget to post progress pix

Seeks,

"Im thinking Watco rejuvenating oil exterior?"

I don't think the one I use says exterior. It comes in a small metal can/bottle similar to those that have thinner or spirits in them. I'll look at the label when I get home tonight. I initially used it because I wanted something light, that would penetrate deeply and allow me to reapply frequently to keep up the wood.

If they sell an exterior grade, I would be interested in knowing what else they have in there? Maybe a UV inhibitor?

-G

S

G - I was thinking of trying the Watco rejuvenating oil exterior thats
what i was trying to say. Its not at my local HomeDepot but
is online. Yes, it has the UV stuff and other things?

Im in the middle of sanding. I really hosed Thin Man up.
Mostlikly inexperience, You think? probably to cold for the
stain to dry correctly and the stain was black in most areas with very little wood
grain showing. I put the oil on top of wet stain i think (bad move)
Ton of work removing stain and oil, looks like im in the same boat as
tikifreak sanding off stain. :(

GMAN posted on Fri, Dec 7, 2007 4:34 AM

Seeks,

In good conditions (warm and dry) I let each coat of stain dry for several days. I make sure there is no excess stain that will get sticky. I generally do three coats of the stain, or until I am happy with the color. Then, I wait at least a week or more before I apply the stain - sometimes a month. If it is cold and damp where you are, drying times will be a lot longer. Sorry to hear you've got a mess on your hands. That sux.

You can call me if you wanna discuss. I'll send my number in a PM.

-G

S

Thanks G you the best.

The cleanup is going faster than i thought. I will be back
in no time. I have pic's so will have a before and after shot.

S

Clean up is NOT going fast as stated above.
Man i got my self into a mess, lots and lots of re-work!

Many hrs of removing stain!

This is where I'm at right now.
