Dont hold back kita.. We wont mind if you post more photos, tikis or not...

Now see there, a girl that lives NOW, not looking behind (no pun intended) (60's). Get on with the Modern tiki girls. You go Kita.

This Lark issue features a polynesian god cartoon and a woman having an interesting time with an Indian statue - which of course is not a tiki - but it may provide a clue into the psyche of the jet-age and their fondness for pagan idols.

What luck! I stumbled on a Lewis VanDercar article - "Florida's Nine Foot Nude". He's not mentioned by name in the article.

Incidentally the mud covered beauty on the table of contents is actress Nadejda Dobrev http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0229759/ who unsurprisingly for my archives was in Ed Wood's Orgy of the Dead and is still acting today.

I saw this offered on ebay and knew it had to be included in Sabu's thread .
It's too bad she is covering up so much of the tiki mug, but you get the
idea .

Martian Tiki, that is friggin' FAN-TAS-TIC !!! What a great series of Van Dercar portraits, never seen anything like it! The weirdest thing is though that while the text actually SAYS the following (which, incidentally, is the message in TIKI MODERN also :) ):

"The work of this Floridian artiste shows an influence of the primitive, of African carvings and weird Tahitian gods. All modern art has changed radically because of this rediscovery of (the) primitive approach..."

...NONE of the photos show any of his Tikis, again. My guess is that, as an artist, he considered Tikis as not being enough his OWN creations, but more as commercial endeavors, and did not want them featured in the photos. Or, maybe that's what sold best at the time, and so he just didn't have any around. :)

wasn't he responsible for the strange tikis at the entrance to the luau in florida??

You're late to the party, Tipsy, see top of previous page 19 :D

Saw this one on ebay...

Cultural archaeologists must not judge the aesthetic preferences of an ancient culture - instead we must ponder what jet-age man was thinking.

Sorry everyone I need to take everything offline for a while as the web hosting has deemed everything a "file repository" terms of use violation. Everything essentially is showing up as hotlinked to them and they don't like that. I'll try to get the high resolution stuff back up in the form of a web site once they've moved on to someone else since I know a few people were downloading it. Maybe I could try to use the regular way of uploading since shockingly not everyone needs to see the fiber structure of the paper in a scan.

Tiki Club in Bellflower ?? Could this have been the existing Hawaiian Room.....

http://www.tikicentral.com/viewtopic.php?topic=5792&forum=2

Maybe it was a Tiki Go-Go club back in the day.

While perusing the web site for Something Weird video, I found this burlesque collection from circa 1953, some of which was actually shot on Waikiki Beach.

**Burlesque In Hawaii- $10 plus s+h **
(click the link or pic to go to the product page.)

If you're not familiar with Something Weird video, dig around their web site for a bit. You'll find some lost classics, vintage commercials, drive-in and movie theater interstitials (aka "snipes"), lots of vintage porn, and obscure psychotronic drek. A great company for people with a taste for "Teh Odd."

On 2010-01-19 17:18, bigbrotiki wrote (with some material snipped for this post):

Here's a little addition in the Tiki Nudie recon genre undertaken from martian's findings

This Tiki got to see his share nudie cuties in his day:

This Marquesan idol was quite popular, and was not only made into a lawn Tiki and wall hanging, but also a lamp base.

I recently discovered another photoshoot involving the Marquesan wall idol.
This image I had posted before - but I want this post to include everything discovered so far.

And the new photos are below. From Gaze June 1966.
High resolution scans available at http://www.martiantiki.com/gaze-june1966/

I think many of you will be glad to know that this idol did not exist in isolation - but was part of a tiki bar frequented by nudie cutie models posing for Ron Vogel (as seen in the scan of page 41.) Ann Sloane did a lot of modeling in the 1960's. This model's more common name is actually Carol Turner or Lydia Farrell. She starred in The Notorious Daughter of Fanny Hill and Suburban Pagans (both sold by Something Weird Video - which has been getting several mentions on this forum lately)

Poster for Suburban Pagans
http://www.wrongsideoftheart.com/2009/09/suburban-pagans-1968-usa/

Oh and you might note that there is a bearded fellow in the center right of the poster and also in the trailer. That is William Rotsler, girlie mag photographer, deirector, artist, author, and bon vivant. I recently aquired an account he wrote of a 1964 trip to Hawaii - so I trust that will become one of the sacred ancient texts of this community when I get around to scanning it - and you can probably expect it will be interesting given his role in this thread.

Also another bit of trivia - as a star trek novel author he is the person who came up with the name Nyota for Lt. Uhura - which became canon in the recent Star Trek movie reboot.

Also here are some slide scans of 1960's model Lani.

And lastly an example of the rare and maladapted to south seas sunlight - blond jet age hula girl.

Not quite exotic but I see she has a Les Baxter Lp displayed behind her, wouldn't this be a great record compilation jacket?

Gosh I love this thread.

I love this thread too. I think that this topic deserves it's own forum since it is such a major part of tiki culture.

Yes it would be. I'd like to encourage you and anyone who posts rare finds to include where it came from.

A woman with a record collection was a frequently occuring motif, probably as often as finding a tiki with a model - so it's not super common but not rare either in my opinion.

Well as long as I'm posting - a magazine I was working on years ago "Tin Titfer". A titfer is actually british slang for a hat (despite what appears to be the main focus of the magazine!)...and the target audience would have been tinfoil hat wearers that like green space women and avoiding communist conspiracies with heavily radiation sheilded tiki bars and bachelor pads.
