I think that Hula Girl #1 (3rd pic down) from martian-tiki was the inspiration for Janet Jackson's infamous Super Bowl haltime "performance"! |

I suppose if I owned this I would think the pictorial of Mara Corday Oct 1958 playboy playmate / actress in Tarantula 1955 giant spider science fiction film would be notable. The hula girl cover image will have to do. [ Edited by: martian-tiki 2011-04-20 21:57 ] |

Lewis Vandercar was the artist who designed the Sea God of Pagan Island. I trust these are both new discoveries to early jet age archeology. Rogue

Oh and the cup pattern was why this particular issue got scanned now...given the thread on taco cups currently at the top of the discussion... Jaybird Color Spectacular

Thank you for continuously contributing some fine eye candy here. Somehow I had missed the "Naked Island" spread - what classic text, hilarious! That "Made in Western Germany" writing on that equipment case I believe refers to the Arriflex camera in an old sound blimp they used. |

Cabaret The reason I bought this issue was for the cover model Judy Bamber. She is best known for her film career in such classic movies as "the Atomic Brain" and "a Bucket of Blood." This is an article on the Zamboanga club and its lead dancer Dee Evil. Obviously the photos are from the same source as the posts a few pages back - though clearly the Cabaret article is vastly more factual.

Great find! This supports what I said earlier here in another thread:
And though we might think that to start having strip acts in supper clubs was a sign of devolution into a "seedier" genre of entertainment, it makes sense: WHAT was the only thing that TV could not offer to the adult audience?: Nudity and sex! That's the one thing where it could NOT compete with the nightclubs. I'd love to get a better scan of that article. |

Martian-tiki provides all of his content in much higher-resolution... http://martiantiki.com/cabaret-v2n11/ Yes, this was a significant find in documenting the history of the Zamboanga. Thanks Martian-tiki !! It also shows that Martian-tiki's earlier related post in this thread wasn't just a one-off photo shoot. Kind of puts Fantasy Island on Pico in a more relevant light from a historical devolution perspective, no? :) |

Nice stuff as always, martian-tiki. That tiki in the shadows of the "Pleasure Cruise" cover might be a Witco. Bigbro would know for sure. Found another Zamboanga photo. This time the dancer is Libby Jones, and the photo is dated January 1956:

Nice find Sabu. Was that a press photo or out of an issue, or other, I'm curious how other people look for things? Cabaret Queens Quarterly This issue has actresses Jayne Mansfield on cover and Mickey Jines as centerfold (why I bought it). Also a rehash of the article on the topless Tiki Kai from Modern Man July 1966. There are some differences between the two. (Both magazines were by the same publisher) Also a profile of a Stardust Casino showgirl - considering "stardust" has 200 hits on tiki central it doesn't strike me as inappropriate to include. Also an article with a go-go dancer in a hula outfit. The thread on the Tiki Kai which just got bumped due to the tragic lack of images - prompted me to scan this issue. The Modern Man article

Great find, A-frame! Good to see you're finally going through that stash of magazines(?)
Lately I've been finding stuff on library, museum, and newspaper archive sites. That Zamboanga photo was from the Los Angeles Library archive, if I remember right. Here's a recent piece by Ben Newman I found on the usenets:

Komohana, it's dated 1959. Found a few more background items... May 1962 - is it a Tiki or some other idol? Sensation 1959 - shows great taste in the popular music of the time... Martin Denny of course! |

He's Back! The “LUCKY TIKI” was clearly booked out in the 60's. Shown here before with other models in front of the same fireplace, he's a centerfold again. Oh the stories he could tell… Modern Man Aug 66
This issue also includes Iris Bristol (BOT p.22)
and a Van Dercar article, touting his ability to "remain focused" on his work...must have been tough!

Wow - I've had that issue of modern man for a long time because an actress was in it and must not have opened it again since I've been posting here...Elizbeth Blake featured in that issue is actually Pat Barringer (or Pat Barrington) one of the most notable sexploitation actresses of the 1960s. Which just goes to show that an article that may not seem interesting at the time may turn out very interesting as one's interests evolve. As long as I'm posting...
