Rambutan tree

Rambutan, Nephelium lappaceum, is a medium-sized tropical tree.
The fruit produced by the tree is also known as "Rambutan".
The earliest record of Rambutan trees show that they were
cultivated by the Malayan jungle tribes around their temporary settlements.
Rambutan trees grow to a height of 35-60 ft. The tree grows from
sea level up to 1,600ft. with best growth in deep soil; clay or
sandy loam rich in organic matter, and thrives on hilly terrain
as it requires good drainage. The wood is similar in color
to Goncalo Alves and equally as dense and durable.
It is perhaps a bit deeper in its orange color and has some
pink or red colors as well. It can be found with a dense flame
figure that rivals the nicest curly maple.
Sharp blades are needed as the wood is extremely dense and tough.

  • WOW is this TRUE* :)
It is worth the effort as the high natural polish possible with this wood is very beautiful.

Oh, cool! I see the fruit all the time at my Chinese grocery, but I had no idea the wood was so pretty!

You are a busy man, interesting to see different textures on each piece of wood. Which one did you prefer carving?

H
hang10tiki posted on 03/24/2019

Hilt- the lighter color two are softer so easier to work on.
The darker two are more of a hard wood.

But I sure like the color on the dark wood

Cheers and thanKs for the flyBy

Can you hinge that piece on
like a gull wing back door?

Me, I can't carve mango any more.
Allergies.
Also, take care as some exotic wood is toxic.
Especially if you grind it.

Lastly,
I thought you'd carved that atoll guy.
Bet you could. Like, an army of'em.

H

Cy- thanks

Will- thought about a hinge but the wood may not tolerate it
Velcro works fine for now.
If it happens again, insert magnets might look better
:)
Also I wear glasses, goggles and mask when dust goes a flyin!
I know, I need to try n carve that Micronesian squatting Tiki
They are cool, one of my favorites

hang10tiki,

I was laughing so hard at the alcohol and then your finished guy came up. What a bad hair day, oh well he's dead and will never know!
I would love to see a photo of all your small carvings together. Of course I have a few that would be left out.

Cheers, Wendy
