MDM, This guy is 30 in tall, Mango wood.
Nice, soft EZ to carve.
Finishes soft with wipe on poly.
Has black lines & specks. Looks like a cross
between palm & maple sugar candy.

I bought 3 more of the dowel kits for 3 more grinders. One dowel is 24 in long. I suspect that one could end up 4 ft tall.

So I was thinking, I bet I could carve a pipe.
Ya, a tiki pipe.Ya, with a Ku head.
A big ol honkin thing.
Something you'd hold out at arms lenth.
A flaming pit at the end of a stick.
I don't know, Is this something we need ?
Are a billion guys doing it already ?

It doesn't matter if anyone else is doing it - what you carve will surely be original. I'm sure we can find a good use for it!

Will I thought about tiki pipes a while back, there are a few vintage ones out there but I didn't really find anyone doing new ones. I know they can make pipes out of clay but I don't know squat about pipes - so I decided that was a bad idea for me. Check out Falcoln Pipes, they sell blank bowls in different woods, shapes, sizes, meerschaum lined, etc. You can carve the bowl and it attaches to the pre-made stem - you don't have to worry about getting all of that right. Plus the bowls are interchangable. On the downside, the parts all seem expensive to me.

Disclaimer - As a respiratory therapist, I cannot recommend the burning of any plant material and sucking it into your lungs :lol:

Told you I made one - 2007. The bowl was too wide so only half would burn. I'm sure you could experiment to find the right dimensions.

She eats the kid

I don't know
I didn't see it
I can't call it

But yet there's more
I still have the business end to do
[the part that muddles]
And you can't just throw it in the sink
when your done.
It needs a place to live, a base.
I'm thinkin a cone shaped chatahoochie
kinda thing.
We'll see.

Looking great there Mr. Anders! I'm torn on the cannibal story. Never been sure which was right.

The business end of the muddler can have teeth like you showed or be smooth. Personal preference? Smooth so it's easier to clean. But both work well.

Nice! Exposed aggregate concrete base? Did you put a piece of ABS pipe in the center to keep the muddler from getting scratched up?

Ya know my buddy Rob's a good guy.
A family man.
Runs a clean joint on the upper east side.
We had to massage the end of his muddler.
Now we send it home to him.

Mike, I mixed the Chattahoochee rock with Portland cement.
Poured it around a clean white PVC pipe
inside of a cardboard cone.
3 hours later I pulled off the cardboard
and with a toothbrush I cleaned off and exposed
as many rocks as I could.

Next up is my Nu Ku

Looks small in the picture - its not. That's a fat piece of Mango. Its a nice start.

Really nice thread Will carve. I am liking the variety in the things you do. Especially like the in progress pictures, as you taught me a great lesson. I have always had trouble with feet and I usually start my pieces there but seeing how you first buried the ankles on your latest Ku and then lay the feet out was a "Now I get it!' moment. Thanks and keep up the great work.
