Carvings from Frog Island Tikis

Happy New Year ya'all! Skip you are right, he is a sneaky little bastard, and I'm pretty sure he is the one that crept under the Christmas tree and replaced the $5000 diamond ring I bought for my wife with a bottle of rum and a couple of swizzle sticks. (and she doesn't even drink rum.) Here he is completed.

I added beach sand to the base portion.


Also chipped away at this big piece of cedar.


I want to make plenty of shelf- like portions to display shot glasses as well as a compartment in back for a few mugs or bottles.

Thanks to John and Irene for this honkin' chunk of bass wood.

I will use a portion for the bottom piece of this one under construction.

Never a shortage of big timber and big projects coming out of Oregon. Great carves and an entertaining thread.

Guess I was wrong about that Palm Beach thing.
The shot glass display is brilliant.
A larger mug display could be a slam dunk too.
Real cool.
I like the beach sand too.

amate thanks, I try to never take for granted the availability of suitable wood for carving that I have at my disposal. Will, cold weather does not stop a person that feels obligated to produce tiki. Damn H10, there is such a word as cytosines, I looked it up. I am not the best at finishing but I love to start. This 6x6 piece of redwood came out of my barn.

TikiSkip provided the cool float. His name is "Ben" cause he will have a clock in him.

He is being built to fit into this empty space in my bar.

Thank you BT, I like 'em to do something like light up or tell time rather than just stand there. MDM, I actually did lol on that one, very good. (the rosy red cheeks of the haole children) Appreciate the feed back Scot and Skip, amate just a 2x4 prop here and there to keep the roof up, and H10 as soon as I get my daughter and her beau and their clutter out of the downstairs area I will post shots.

Despite some inclement weather I made a bit of progress. I'm glad to have Ben about finished.

I did some glass eyes and decorations to inlay.

I carved out the back and installed a clock. I will paint the numbers on the face.

The grain on this wood is beauty.

We had this guy's legal name changed from Monk to "Dyson" because he reminds me of one of those blade-less fan thingys. I got a coat of red on him before the temps dropped.

I spent time last week making a compartment in this cedar piece for a few mugs and also ordered some small string lights shaped like floats that will hang on each side of the tiki.

Ben is looking great!! Will you be at TiKi Caliente this year?

Thanks amigos, Skoo I am looking forward to Caliente this year, hope to see you there and have these done by then. Yes Will, I want to add a glass top so you can stand around it, more like a bar/table. I cut another portion out of the back that will hold a few bottles and will be lit from the bottom. The snow is great here because it only lasts for a few days at a time, rather than months. I have a question for you guys, though. Do you stay up till 4 in the morning or do you get up that early? Either way it's insane.

I took some progress pictures this weekend.
The first oar I carved sold quickly so I started the other, this one named "Orson"



Except for the numbers on the clock, "Ben" is done.


It is not my style to be delicate and go all tappy tappy with a sharp chisel and mallet but I had to or risk snappy snappy on this unknown 6x6 piece of wood.


From this shot you can plainly see how my shop resembles Tikimeculas'.

I hope to have this cedar stump done for Caliente.


I will add these lit floats to the back.


This section will have the bottles lit from the bottom.

The oar is killer. Ben finished up nice. Are you going to bother much to hide the cord for the light?

Thanks Aloha, below are a few more clocks that hopefully will give you more to burgle. I knew you would run out of cyisms H10, (how bout cychotic or Cy-Tai) Big T I have a channel cut into the back where the wiring will go. The stand is just for display, Ben is actually made to hang on a wall.

Those clocks are awesome- along with all of your work! Dang, now I want to see them in person at Caliente....

It was nice meeting you at Oasis TikiAno and I highly recommend Caliente as Wildsville man throws one heck of a party. I knew you would rally H10 and come up with a few more. The shot glass display carving is starting to take shape.

"Orson" is almost done.


It's some kind of beautiful laminated wood.


I took a year off of this piece of hemlock mostly because it is pulpy yet crackly and murder to carve but I'm back at it.


Spring is here and these shots are for hiltiki, as it shows the pods that the frogs grow in. Soon I will be able to see tadpoles swimming inside.

Oarsome! had to be said.

Two days without one update from anyone is embarrassing dudes so here goes. Very good Watango, I would not have thought of "oarsome." The technical name for this chest high piece of Japanese hemlock is "Tsuga" so that's his name. It is not even good for firewood, being pulpy, powdery in spots, and extremely chippy but I still had fun carving him. I used mostly power tools (chainsaw, grinder, ArborTech) because chisels were just not cutting it, so to speak.

You can tell from it's stump behind it how it fell in my yard.

I'm fairly certain that this kind of hemlock is the state tree of Washington, but don't quote me on it because I don't feel like researching at the moment.

Today he soaked up a quart of Cabots like a tikiphile absorbing rum at a room crawl, and will take a few more coats to complete.

Once I got this cedar carving into the garage I realized how wet it actually was, so it will not make the trip to Caliente this year but may be with me for the local Tiki Kon, or for Oasis in August.

I added a top section for this piece of bass wood.

We are taking in a bit of water captain, glad the ts arrived Jeff, and there is something about a chain saw that makes me feel above the law amate. Here is the menagerie that will accompany me to Palm Springs in two short weeks.



I built a simple stand out of copper that I had kickin' around for "Orson"

It took three coats of a green/yellow paint to complete the numbers on "Ben"
