Those Fronds are badass... Wow!

WC

Thank you every body.
Hilda, you know your comps are special.
I finished this last week.
It was really wet. The wettest I've carved yet.
I carved it extra special.
Then, it all shriveled up &
looked better than I carved it.

I feel like I own these guys now.
I've got them coming & going.

Love those little dudes' expressions. So cool...

S

Nice, very cool!

Hear, hear!

I think he must be spending too much time out in the boat with the crew! :)

Well, the fact is,
I haven't done much carving lately.

However I have logs in the works.
For example

Looking good Will, Marshall Islands?
Giant dates on the tree in back?

T

nice hoist. that would be handy to have...

I was once told "you can do anything if you have the right tools"
Case in point...

WC

Mike,
Good spot. Those dates are 4 lbs.each.
I preserve them in ball jars.
Any body want to try some?

So I'm chipping away on this goofy guy.
There's a lot of wood here.
I've made a big pile of chips.

Looks like a nice tiki you have going there Will. I am a bit disappointed however. I was kind of hoping you would make me a canoe out of that log! :D

H

We are all waiting for some progress pictures. :)

He should be done by now?? I go to the Keys for a few days and everyone starts goofing off. Don't make me come over there!

I just put the last coat of finish on this
7 ft pine log.
It was a pleasure to carve,
as long as you have sharp tools, go the right direction
& don't want to grind or sand.
He really liked bold cuts.

Wow
Awesome

Great use of the wood's shape Will, superb!

CY - don't tell him that! He strives to carve beyond the shape of the wood. I'm glad to see some of my influence is rubbing off. This one went quick - it only took a month!

Thank you,
I like some parts better than other, but,
I say that all the time.

Check out this hairball.
Not all palm is the same.
I cut the bottom off to stand it up
& let it drain.
The inside is about what you'd find
in a Key lime pie.
Not much hope we will ever see a silly face in that thing.

Only a month???…that would be a yearlong carve for me.
I’m not sure which is worse for me---my aversion to sand paper or sharpening chisels. I’m coming to the conclusion that I might be in the wrong business.
Great carve Will !

H

Hairballs are the best. Love all hairball carvings, looking froward to seeing the end result. Hope you succeed.

B

That "Pine log you just carved is a Norfolk Island Pine and is a really excellent carving wood as seen by the excellent work you did with it. I think the palm above is a mushy Bottle palm? not easily carved, maybe if you freeze it you can get an ice carving from it? :)

I was going to take that rootball off his hands till I saw the inside!! Total mush. I suggested cutting the rootball off the stump??

T

came out great will! I seem to see some spalting here and there. was that an old log?

WC

Big T,
You've been encouraging me since 2009.
Thought I'd take this moment to say thanks.
That darker wood is the black glaze stuff.
I'm not a fan of doing that to hard wood.
I did the crown & didn't like it but I was
stuck & had to finish it to the bottom.

Some one gave me a 7 in pine log about 30 in long.
I split it in to 3 long ways.
This was just practice.
Kinda like doodling.

Next up some thing different.
My first Namahage.

Nice doodles!

Killer!

1400 views & not one,
"what the hell's a Namahage".
Am I the only one who didn't know?

They come in red & blue.
This one is a blue 2 {bottom] tooth.

This head is going on that body.

Ok, I'll fess up that I was not aware of namahages. I had to look it up so I wouldn't ask and
appear clueless.
Nice start....

Painting could be as or more important
than the carve here.
Thought I was making progress only to see
this is all wrong.
You know what they say,
"carve deeper"

H

I'm having fun watching the progression, keep posting. :)

Are you going to have the tusks (or big teeth) coming out of its mouth too?

Smurf Tiki? Whatever it is I have no doubt it will turn out awesome!!!!

My pleasure, Will. I'm a huge fan of your work! Funny you should mention how that glaze turned out. I had the same thing happen recently. And like you said, I had to finish that way to the bottom!

I've been watching the progression on this in person since I moved back to Fort Lauderdale, I'm certain this piece will be fantastic, although Will is too critical of himself. Watching him carve is a real treat!!

You are lucky tk, Will is a fantastic teacher. I learned more in one hour from him than I had gathered in the 10 years prior to my visit, so happy to of had the pleasure to meet him!

Such kind words for a humble wood carver.
Thank you all.

jimsflies that's the one,
you know him?

He needs some hair &
a new Namahage suit.

WC

Is this guy handsome or what?

Here's the glamor shots.
My first & most likely my last Namahage.

Dude - that's not "tiki"

Haha! Yeah, but who cares?! It's friggin awesome!

H

I like this piece, don't care if it is not tiki. Come to think of one could easily fit this in a tiki environment.

Not tiki? Here’s what I do. Make up some fantasy Island that exists only in your imagination. Sometimes I dream up a whole culture, complete with legend/ history, of the folk that inhabit your isle. It gives me something to occupy my mind while sanding…
BTW, love the hair! :)

The legend does come from a Pacific Island?? A lot of subtle details. very cool!
