Will carve

In conclusion.
I worked over the chest & back .
Redid the mouth.
He got fingers & Kiss kinda shoes.
Gave him a good sand paper scratching &
2 coats of poly.
The color of this surprised me.
I have a chunk left I may try something
really different for me.

The poly really made the color pop! Excellent carve Will I Am

I was intrigued that you wiped the mouth off and still had room for a new one. Excellent!

When I hear worms in some of my logs (yes, you can hear them chewing up inside the tunnels), I pour Everclear or Mineral spirits down the holes and come back later to hear only silence.

Another beautiful carve Will. I am always amazed by the smooth finishes some of you guys get. I either need a better sanding technique or more patience.

I thought the same thing as McTiki in that there would not be enough room to take the mouth out and re do it, but he looks much better and the paint pops the grain!

I saw that as soon as you started! Old, rotten, worn eaten wood can be some of the most beautiful. It only takes vision to see beyond the blemishes.

I'm surfin thru T.C. & I see this carved Monkey Skull.

This is the coolest thing I've seen
since my 3 legd Tang.

It was followed by Crazy Als mug version.

It's all coming together now.

Tang looks awesome Will, the finish with the crack'n really give it authentic vintage feel !

So I'm feelin real good about my carve.
Startin to take form, makin progress & all.
My neighbor comes over & I ask him what he thinks it is.
He rubs his chin & says, a motorcycle seat.

I'm carving along & I uncover a soldier in the army of worms
marching thru this log.
Man was he surprised.
Bet he's never seen daylight before.

I dislodged him.
This is his lil face.
Think his mom would recognize it?

Now he's trying to make a getaway.
This is the south end of a
north bound worm.

So I fed him to my lizard
and he liked it.

Will, I hear those are good sauted in a little butter and garlic ~ taste like chicken!
(I was talking about both the grub and the lizard :lol: )

About those worms,
I got the 2 ends mixed up.
Go figure.

Wicked work, this spalted tang is brillant.
I have a question though, are you 100% sure it is oak?
Just because spalting usually does not happen in oak, but more likely birch, beech, aspen and sugar maple.
And by the look of it, your log make me think about maple which is also maple hard as hell.
Anyway, just curious about it.

Well Cljha here's the story.
I got this log from my neighbor.
He cut the tree down & left a 6 ft stump standing.
2 or 3 years later he cut the stump down.
That's where I come in.
I'm 65% sure he knows his trees so there's room for error.
I'm here in Florida & we have 3 or 4 kinds of oak.
The color is spectacular but it's not so much fun to carve.
It's a tuff ol dude.

Thanks for the answer. So I did some "research" and apparently oak can also spalt. So, my mistake probably...
I recently carve a bowl out of some seasonned spalted maple...I do understand what you say about the not fun to carve :wink:
But the end result is spectacular (colorwise) and if anything it helps pushing the sharpenning skills:)
Oak is quite tough normaly but apparently from what I've been reading the spalting lines are also tough on the tools edges....
Anyway, I do think it is a good learning process to work with harder wood :wink:

Well I've got a good start on my carved monkey skull.
Since I didn't have a monkey skull to start with,
I had to carve one.
That's where I am at now.
This is not a biology exercise however
perhaps I could have consulted Robert
on simian anatomy.
Now I can carve the "carved" part
of the carved monkey skull.

That is a great carve Will, especially the choice of wood as it makes the skull look real. You sure took a lot of material out, can't wait to see what kind of detailing you do to it.

Update, update...

The hardest part of this carve was
knowing when it's over.
I rubbed off a few days of tats when
I realized they only cloud the
good looks of the wood.
That was the reason I carved this wood.
