Daaaaaaaaaammmmnnn!!!

Again, good job Will.

Style-10
Detail-10
Shape-10

Guess there is no need for me to post on here anymore.

That's amazing Will!

P

yeah, yeah,.... let's see the norfolk pine & the rosewood already,,,, lol...

So nice I think I'd let you whack me in the head with it.
Very cool.

Norfolk, yes
Rosewood, check,
but first.
Thanks to all of you for your kind comments.

TMec, not only do we need you but,
and I think I can speak for the 14,905 users here,
we want you too.

Cy, I just used all my simple tools.
Large chisels smaller chisels & then it's X-actos #10 & 11
& my parting V chisel
Nothing special.

Next up is a Lono.
I found a new stash of logs and
we're going to find out how Norfolk Pine carves.
If it's good we have some monsters coming up.
I started with a small one.

The same day I got a call from a tree guy.
He has some Rosewood logs & they're big.

P

oh.
my.
god.

Daaaaaaaang

The old saying: When it rains it pours! I can not express how jealous I am of that "little" Norfolk pine log. He is correct in saying that the one he is working on is a "little" log. I saw the stash, and have been drooling over it ever since.

P

I'm about to start a big lono myself...

but I must admit... seeing as you're about to take on a biggie, I feel a trip to south florida coming on... put me up downstairs for a couple o' days?

I had cut off a chunk of this pine to test
be for I lugged it home.
I spent a few hour session with it & liked it
so much I went right over to get a log.
I gave the test chunk to Tom.
He had a few hour session on the other side with it.
He liked it.
Can ya tell who did which side ?

Ah that's easy, flatter side yours, toothy grin Toms. Do I win the tiki when complete?

Looks to me like Tom got to it first and hogged up most of the log  Both sides look great

That is just a tiny wedge out of a small slice that was lying around next to the logs. I had heard that Norfolk Pine was good to carve, but had no idea just how nice it was in the small form. I cheated and used my Wecheer on it and then cleaned up with the hook knife. It carves almost as nice as Basswood. Will was nice enough to give me the rest of the slice - I may turn some on the lathe.

cy - this was practice, its done. You can have it - but we only deliver locally. Hukilau is coming!

WC

I'm shifting gears as I'm side lined
on that big honkin Norfolk Pine.

P

sidelined? what happened? you hurt your shoulder again?

and a new shift know for the chebby?

WC

So this was fun & went quick.
It's a palm frond.
I want to do more.

Nice Will. The palm frond holds a surprising amount of detail

Nice carve. Little Tiki dude looks a bit sad, though.

P

Bad ass!

I saw this and immediately tried talking him into trimming my trees - noting that he would have more palm frons that he would know what to do with. He cordially turned me down, but the offer still stands for anyone willing to trim my trees.

H

Hard to believe it's carved out of a palm frond. Nice carving.

GROG right.
That lil guy looks sad.
Lets cheer him up.
You can't be happy with bad posture.
I'll start with that.

So I started on the frond you gave me last night. It is distinctly different from the other one I carved. Much Better! The new one is much drier and is more crisp - just like you said, "it carves like palm but softer".

Looks like this little dude has his head stuck up in the frond. He can't breath! Help him quickly!!

This guy should be happy now
with his head out of that frond.
He got a bath in redwood stain &
a lacquer top coat.
I'm more use to the fronds now
& I like them.
Want to try one ?
I'll mail you a couple.
We got lots.
Just like carving palm but
even more consistent.

That Ku finished up nicely. Cool stuff.

That turned out great!

A frond is a frond,
not so.
I've been scoping out fronds that
lend them selves to carving.
Check out this king kong frond.
It's from the Royal family.

holy crap those are great

To give credit where it's due.
Benz showed us this frond thing
back in the day.

These take stain really well.
A dark oak bath & lacquer over coat.
He's good to go.

Now that you're done with the little ones - lets see that big frond get some love!
