Why thank you guys for the props! Toe, your muggy is still here waiting for you...it does have a little crack behind one of the eyes. I'm going to fix it by adding a little paper clay and re-firing it. I just found out this last weekend that this works fine. OK, on with stuffs... What a weekend! I had a little Clay Jam in Denver with some of my "dearest friends" and fellow artists...we didn't do a lot of work, but we did sit around and had a great time talking Art, glazes, trouble shooting, etc. It was so much fun, the time just zoomed by. I went on and on about how cool the Tiki Culture was and I think I got some of these folks all jazzed up to come over and play with us some. Watch out TC...there is some real amazing talent in this little group of people here. Handbuilding will take on a whole new dimension as these gals are excellent throwers and glaze specialists. Thrown and altered tiki mugs...I salivate just thinking about it. For some reason, I can't remember the guys name in the middle there, but he was this really cool cat from England who is a master mold maker and educator... a wealth of knowledge...I'll come back with his name (sorry). From left to right: Introducing the Original Babalu Babes! Crazy Carol - Mary Cay - Terri - Shannan... GIRLS RULE- GUYS DROOL One of the highlights of the Clay Jam was meeting PopsTiki - he is an amazing guy! One of the nicest fellows you are ever going to meet here! look at what Pops gave me! My new favorite mug! I will use it all the time Pops...you RAWK brother! |

Hope we can do it again Pops! LLT - My Dad had to cancel the pie fight last minute :( We had to push it till Thanksgiving. Well, I pulled my first casting on the Yipwan Drum Mug this morning...this one still needs a little clean up, but hey, the mold works. Now only 25 more to go...I'm hurrying Sir B. Babalu, what da heck is going??? Where ya been???? Did you get stuck in the kiln? Did you finally start cutting the grass and lost the lawn mower on the first run? Are you making mugs, but each one is taking 15 days? Were you doing recombinant molecular projection work but there was a PNG mug stuck in the test chamber with you, and now you have a mug handle on your back???? Where DA BABALU???!!!??? |

GROG like the 2 on the right, but maybe use the light tan from the top of the first mug on the left, for the white areas on the right 2 mugs.(Although, GROG does like the contrast on the far right mug with the white body) [ Edited by: GROG 2009-07-13 12:06 ] |

"GROG like the 2 on the right, but maybe use the light tan from the top of the mug to the left of the right mug beside the one that's sort of behind the one that is to the side of the first mug on the left, and then smudge (You don't have to smudge it too much, just a bit, if you smudge it too much it will ruin it.) the dark parts so that the blending on the bottom matches the top right side of the mug, and for the white areas on the right, you should match the 2 mugs on the left, counting from the right.(Although, GROG does like the contrast on the far right mug with the white body) Then, flip the colors upside down and you got a winner!" Me think GROG take too many art director pills. He should get a kiln so we can all tell him what to do AFTER he's already done it. |

Now to get the thread back on track from Cammo's derailment. GROG talk to Squidster today, and it sound like you guys were busy little beavers this week. GROG look forward to seeing some of the fruits of your mudslinging this week Babs. Got a new plug and GROG roommate put it on the kiln so it will fit the 220 outlet in the garage, so maybe we'll fire that puppy up this week. |

CLAY CAMP!!! This is what it's all about right here  Squidly drove down, and posted up downstairs for the whole week...we busted some ass this last week! We drove hard...we had fun...we talked art, and made art from sun up to well past dark each day...we got a crap load of production stuff knocked out for Oasis...more importantly, we got all insane! And Sir B didn't miss out. He and Maria were able to go nuts with us a couple of good nights there. Where to start... Ok, my Yipawan Drum Mug...I have most of the "30" that I am doing of this mug cast, cleaned up, drying and waiting for the first firing. We were able to get one good firing out this week with some really "great" test trees made of different glazes. I think this mug will begin to look even better as firings progress. As Sir Squid can attest, this mug is a nightmare to clean up...mucho time. But hey, it's all good...still, Squid heard me say that I hated this mug on more than one occasion this week. :) There has been a ton of interest in this guy. Thank you to all that have pm'ed me. If you brought a Babalu work last year at any point, you are at the top of my list for one of these guys. Just let me know if your interested. The rest will be offered up at Oasis first...These mugs will be $75.00 each...I'm making 30 - that's it. After those 30 come out, I'm taking a hammer to the mold. Sir B, has made the "BEST" wahine mug I have ever seen...bar none!!! Proof right here - SQUID - the man! the legend! I made up a couple of Drum forms for Squidly...he joined them together and was off to the races. He designed, and then the sculpt was taken to completion in one night, and a few hours in a morning. It don't get much better than this here. Masterpiece. (ps: squid - it's drying out great so far) PIGGIES ruled the week! It all started with an LLT and Squidy colab (below) and then I picked one up, then Squid picked one up...then we just had to make a Pig Yipper. I also started a little Bumper Car Pig. I had to wrap it - I'll finish it, and post laters on...Sir B took one home the other night as well - going to get all "DAVE" on it I'm sure - Look out TC! Altered Piggies are VOGUE!!! I see a possible show? YAY! Hey, Sir Grog, Clarita, LLT, Robb, Sir Notch, Slacks, JoneSey, Cammo, and Hodaddy thanks for bouncing in. You "ALL" rule!!! Cammo is designing the little cards for both this Yip Mug and also the Cobra Fang mug I'm doing - They look GREAT! Cammo also took one of the Yippers home (#6) and glazed him up - he sure is purdy :) Hank - there are some suprizes for your first Gallery Show - I didn't post - as I said, suprize buddy :) I want to throw in a plug for the bird who has turned the "Big 2" today - Happy B-Day my little Birdie...eMpa loves you! This is what a worked in Studio looks like - GAWD I love it!!! Thanks for a fun time Master Squid! [ Edited by: Babalu 2009-07-19 18:51 ] |

Camp Babalu is the bestest! (Bowana forged his permission slip. He's such a ruiner!!) Arriving to a fridge stocked with overly-caffeinated beverages was just the first treat. Learning ceramic techniques from the master was icing on the cake. Oh, and we had cake, and hot dogs and sang camp songs!!! Thanks Rick, Amy and Simon the Wonder Dog for your hospitality. |

Babs, are you mixing up this glaze yourself? I swear I will make something out of clay, JUST to use it! Dav's Shaken not Stirred mugs also have a killer glaze, very vintage lookin. Squid, I'm sure the plan is for that drum to be functional. How you gonna attach the skin? Did you put holes or a groove around the top after these pics? That thing is looking great already! And is that Ruzic/Squid Pig going to be molded? I want it!!! |

I'll see if Marty Lush can record and post samples when it's done. Feet were cut out after the pics were taken to allow the drum to resonate and project. I don't even know if it will make a good hand drum. Might be better with mallets. Cross yer fingers!!! |

That's a Pappy Haggler's Pottery Shack original from the late '50s. Although a little worn from young whippersnappers clutching the squirrel in a death-grip to snag Ma Haggler's molasses cookies, it's still a solid piece of vintage Ozark Tiki art (Book of Tiki pg. 322). And as a matter of fact, it will be on display at Pappy's Mobile Home Estates booth at Tiki Oasis. Thanks for asking, LLT!!! |
