Very nice effect that really enhances the carving, so where did you drill the hole to put the lighting through? Any way to hide more of the light rope there? Or carve 5-6 more tikis just like it and have them standing side by side with the light rope filling all the bowls.

Hey thanks guys.
Johnny...I stuck the rope lighting through one of the arm underarm
cut-throughs....I think I should be able to find a shorter rope.
And I have considered the idea of carving a couple of twins so they
could share the rope lighting.
Gonna be carving again soon, just not sure what direction things will
go.

Nice concept Conga, I really like it! You're always coming up with neat new things and thinking outside of the box.

Rope light comes in all different lengths now, maybe try a 2 footer plugged into an extension cord?

Its a really moving piece, again, nice work.

Summer in Wisconsin is for the birds.

This will either be a bird of paradise (tiki connection) or one
of the guys from heckel and jeckel (hot rod connection) :)
I can't miss.

Hey crazy old man, the Lighting on the "Wise Man" is Awesome, great idea and the Paradise bird will feel right at home in your paradise.
For youe lighting you may like the light I used in the box that was just finished, About 7$ from Walmart and is called "Under-counter lighting" and has a pass through plug so you can attach several in a line. The led's are Very bright and run Cool, Not as cool as you however! :P :D  :)
We need to get together one of these days!

The Bird is the Word.

J

It's been years since I saw the Heckle and Jeckle cartoons. Conga shows everybody the bird. Yeah!

S

NICE! looks out that sucker looks sharp!

Thanks Seeksurf, he does have a sharp little pekker. This will be a
png-styled bird of paradise, possible perched on a small drum. He looks a
lot better now than he did a few days ago;-)
Thanks for the lighting tip Ben, I am still searching for a permanent
solution, as opposed to the larger-than-needed rope lighting. I looked
around here at all the common spots and I still can't find a rope light
shorter than 3 feet. My wife wants be to carve two more similar figures
and standing them side-by-side, to use up the extra lights. Sounds like
a lotta work to me.
Lakesurfer and Johnny, thanks for visiting. The word is "bird."
You guys are all posting some inspiring stuff, and I really gotta kick into
high gear. I have a carving demo in three weeks (thanks for re-posting
the trike picture, Ben) and I need to get pushing. I plan on having
several things in various stages, perhaps including a tiki.

Didn't H&J smoke big cigars and wear hats??

Yes Hank, I think they got their hats from Cammo.

Speaking from experience Cammo hats mix perfectly w/ most cuban seed Dominican.

Hi kids. Got a few things in the works (not quite like Johnny P's pile
of stuff) and made a little progress with Birdy.

Hope you are all enjoying a great weekend. I get a lot of time for
carving and I also get to live up to my name and bang some congas with
a local blues band tonight. Yahoo.

B

BAng a couple for me there Conga, Your bird is getting well done. Looks like he's gonna sprout wings and ask for a a Ride. :D

Thanks Ben, Bird of Paradise will be taking flight pretty soon!
Trying to keep up with the Joneses (and Johnny P) with multiple
projects, this is another "Conga Modern" in the works.

This is a chunk of good ole' Wisconsin pine from the storm clearing
project in earlier posts. Nice to work with...and a virtually unlimited
supply.

J

CongaModern- CongaMod. That will be a term tossed about in future collectors of tiki revival carvers. You may influence a whole future stylistic generation of carvers in the post-revival tiki revival.

The bird is looking great and so is the new one! Can't wait to see them finished.

S

Looking good conga smooth and nice lines.

C

Thanks Johnny, Seeksurf and Tikifreak, starting to have carving fun after
a short dry spell. The bird is becoming the word, I've started a pretty good
size totem figure, and this CongaMod is getting the shadow treatment.
Johnny, It's interesting to think about who might see all this TC and
other tiki art in another 10 years, and what they might think.
I know they'd think that Johnny P was a buzy Bee.

That's some spooky stuff there Mr. Conga. I'm glad to see that you are back into it and having fun. The bird's the word....

B

Man, I HATE it when you do your Shadow Stuff, it gives me bad dreams! Freeaky stuff and with Halloween coming up soon too. Where's the Bird, he's just in time for Thanksgiving hey? Don't let him get away I;m sure he knows something's up :P :D

B

Go Cooonga! Go Cooonga! The bird is the word brother!

Thanks Gman, Benzo and Babalu, and everyone who peeks into this little
spot. Getting ready to dazzle the crowd at my annual carving demo this
saturday, so I have three little chunks in progress.

I'm liking the bird, i plan some surprises with him :)
The other guys are just hanging around to mess with me.

J

Three in progress...... A member of the NCADHD Carving Club. --- Northern Climate Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Proud to have you aboard.

But it is not affecting your quality.

B

Yep, the Turkey is definitely hearing bad things from those three tiki types and with thanksgivingn coming around he seems to be looking for the fastest escape route.
What kind of wood is he,,if you Marinate him right and for long enough, he promises the tiki nwill taste Just like Chicken!

And quite the disorder it is, Johnny. I'm just not sure if there is a
cure, or if I want to be cured:-)

Great eye Ben, if the Bird of Paradise thing falls apart I will go the
turkey route! Maybe I can carve some little pilgrim designs around the
base, perhaps a punkin or two.

I could also carve some little candy corns around the bottom, what do you
think?

S

Right On conga good to see the bird moving along.
Looking good!

Thanks Seeks, and everyone else who has been watching the bird hatch.
Just some good ole' tung oil to treat the bird right and we'll be all
done, here's the latest from Birdland.

Hope you like:-)

H

We like it a lot, great combination of colors and style.

B

We Likee a Lotee too Conga! Looks like you are getting a bit fancy with the feathers and other detail and like Hiltiki, I Love the coloring. You got the Bad Eye! :P

Great stuff as always Conga!

Hey these guys aren't talking behind Mindi's back are they? lol!

Many thanks Hilltiki. I have knocked out quite a few carvings and this one
is probably the closest I have come to the original concept. I still have to
tone down the color a little so it doesn't look so new, but a little fake
tobacco patina will do the trick. Usually something changes at midstream and
I follow the wood...this time the wood followed me.

Thank you Benz, I was hoping that the famous former Mr. Pelican would
like it :)

That does look like a sneaky bunch, doesn't it, Hodad? Just the sort of guys who
would talk behind Mindimbit's back. By the way, Mindy DOES want to
go west, would you put him up? He sees pics of your store and always
bugs me about it.

Conga!
Great colors, silhouette, and little details on the PNG bird!
that little area of feathers and the motif across the base..
you carvers amaze me...
You're right at the finish line...
Centennial Club!
the dedication to the creative drive
of all the Ohana artists and carvers
is a true testament
to the strength of the scene today!
Thanks for the motivation!!!!

You can give me the bird any time Conga!! It looks great!

S

Yes, Sweet work on the Bird. Love the mix of styles and the
coloring NICE!

That tung oil is going to bring out the color great.

Many many thanks Erik, LLT and Seeksurf....three finished...

The little guys were fun, but now I have to do something a little
bigger

Happy autumn from the Wisconsin northwoods!

J

So what is the direction of the big guy? The tres hombres just completed look pretty happy enjoying some last rays of sun. Nice job! That bird has some character.

Conga, the diversity of your work is wonderful.

The bird is a beautiful work of art. The colors, the posture just a class carving all around.

100 pages of top notch, original work, congrats Conga!

Proud to have you as a fellow Badger State carver!

I want to start page 100!

H

Maybe I can be your page # one hunert guy... Nice stuff as always, Conga. I'm diggin' the smaller pieces but I can't wait to see how that biggun' turns out---lookin' good!

B

Careful there Mr Conga, you might be getting a good reputation and we'd be wanting that right? HELL YEAH! Your pieces are getting such great personalities and even starting to Talk BACK? DON'T Let them get away with that as it will only get worse. Still having those Scary dreams THANK YOU! :P :D
Did you get the idea yet that I'm Loving your work?? Cut that OUT.

S

Big guy looking very stunning!

is it page 100 yet?
The bird is a beaut!
Great color choice
gives it some authenticity and life!

Get that big 'un carved before the snow!

Your carvings are looking great. I love the bird, it turned out beautifully!
Now get busy on the big guy and show us more. :)

C

Will this finally be page 100? Lemme see.
Well, thanks for all of you guys dropping in over here the last
few days, Johnny P, Lakesurfer, Howland, Ben, Seeksurf, LLT and
SavageTiki. I appreciate the comps on the bird, and I did make
some body progress on the big feller last night, and probably will
chizz a little more tonight.
As for direction? You know me better than that Johnny, What direction?
This one is gonna be another Conga "winger"...or"seat of the pants"
carving....or "nightmare carving" as Ben might call it. I am just
letting the chisels go where they want to. It's fun.
It's also getting cold so I'm working inside...pics in a day or so.
Thanks again.

YOU ARE THE MAN!

Hi guys! Getting in the swing of things after a nice vacation to Tennessee.
Have been working on the big slab of basswood from the previous pics, and
he has undergone quite an evolution. I won't call it anything to avoid the
risk of offending someone but it's inspirations are many.

Thanks for checking in with your northwoods friend.

Nice conga nice this guy is looking very original.
