I consider myself a very lucky man to be 'navigating my own waka', hanging out with my young family ('almost' wife & 2 pre-schoolers) in a beautiful part of the world, & supporting it all by doing what I love most, yeehaa!! Pounamu is my muse... Those who have come into contact with this amazing stone will understand these words. She is a unique substance in this world, ideally suited as a material for talisman/pendants due to her extreme toughness & obvious beauty... I am of part-Maori descent, my Iwi being Kai Tahu/ Kati Mamoe, from the very deep southern areas of NZ. Some beautiful pounamu artifacts have been left by my ancestors & I feel that I am picking up a long-forgotten family tradition, and carrying it forward with pride. I label my work as Contemporary Polynesian as I draw inspiration not only from our Maori culture, but from all three Island outposts of Polynesia, and a little in between... (Im going to have that emblazened across my headstone, tattooed across my forehead.. or perhaps just my TC signature.. Not your fault Tuku, common question). Green rocks from Haast/J.Bay have a good chance of being pounamu - can you flick a pic in StoneQ&A? Check those threads and feel free start your own once youre rolling. Being able to dip your toes into the Pacific and/or being part-Maori means you're instant TC Tangatawhenua around here - but you still have to carve a Tiki as the final 'initiation'.. :lol: Seeksurf again: Thanks - that meditating Tiki holds the dubious honour (for me) as being the first one Ive seen resold by a customer (as opposed to a trader who buys for the purpose of reselling).. and at a loss!! whaaaahhh! :cry: -- -- A Tiki/Toki piece I was recently working on: JohnnyP; the back & broader expances of the adze would have been perfect to demonstrate the before/after of diamond-clothing, but when I picked it up to resume work that stage had already been done and only the Tiki detail was left. Meanwhile: the smaller of the two 'Cuzzies' overtakes the original and becomes the trial piece for a new style of eye inlays.. which I promptly screw up not once, but twice before carving my way out of an unsightly eye-sore with the third attempt. phew, wasnt a lot of material left to play with.. Whether to play for the All Blacks or the Warriors: tough decision.. An acceptable result although Im still no further in resolving how to inlay the larger piece (as I've promised buyer). At times like these the best thing is just to move on to something else and let the answer come in its own good time. It always does.. -- Drew up a new Hei-Toki/Tangaroa last night & worked solidly on it all day today. Actually thats not entirely true - I also managed to have a bit of a Shout with BenZart, played a bit of Playstation with my little man (Crash Bandicoot, still luv it after all these years!), threw a ball for the pooch and planted a couple of trees (Rimu). Have I got the greatest job in the world or wot?? :) :) :) My only moan is that it all happens a bit too far away from the Hukilaus and the Chop-chops.. :( :( :( Blocked out with main diamond grinding wheel: ..and a few levels and bevels roughly ground with same wheel: ..until a point is reached where 'waste removal' becomes a hazard rather than a benefit, and we must move on to the more gentle and stealthy handpiece: **JohnnyP: Ive squirreled away a few pics for that diamond cloth demo, using this piece as example. Ill actually take a whole series of pics showing different stages of 'closing up' the scratches & explain a bit more than just diamond cloth stage. Might be a good one to add to the Stone Q&A thread come to think of it. Ill take more dry shots than you normally get to see (unflattering) to illustrate, but the progressions are very subtle and may not be such exciting viewing..? We'll see how it goes.. "How did I miss all this?" I was sayin... until i read a little further... The meditator and your personal black hei tiki are brilliant, all-time, hall-of-fame pieces! This new Tang is off and out of the blocks like a sure fire bet. I love it! Like I keep sayin, I can never decide which style of yours I like the best. Usually its the latest, so today its the Tang toki! :)

Thanks for showing a tad bit more of the stages of development. You take yours less far on the grinding wheel than I have been doing....that was helpful...those 'grunty' wheels can really chew up a piece in a hurry. I've been trying to do more with that wheel because having to remove more material eats up the burs. I'm curious about which bur you would use to do the finer rough out...say around that head. I have a smallish cylinder that I use a lot, but it still seems like that might not be the right one.. Thanks Tama....yah, the world is a busy place for us all. No whining! Just no time for the bench right now.

Even with all the fantastic pictures you post here, it's just not the same as seeing and feeling one of your pieces in person. The finishes are like the smoothest satin, and the detail is unbelievably clean. I continue to be awed by your talent!

I turn around and take a couple days off and Look what you do/ The small "couzzie's" eyes turned out great.. That high flat plateau is difficult to do an inlay in and I like your solution much better. Can't wait to see what you come up with for the other one. ( I Love him the way he is Now) Also the Hei-Toki/Tangaroa Looks to become a Real Masterpiece. For a smal;l guy he has the full bag of detail and looks Great. It does mean honing in on the form with a slower tool/process (handpiece) but what it lacks in speed it makes up for in precision. FBalls: Thanks bruddah! Jen: I just caught your message on Shout the other night before it disappeared off the board.. Im so glad you like fondling my buttocks! I thought I felt something.. :lol: The peaches on this one (Tang/Teko) are also one (two?) of the teeniest, tiniest, TTTooshies Ive ever carved at about 1/2" wide (BOTH cheeks), although not quite as small as that lil blak Tang. And like the original it was modelled after there were plenty of exciting things going on - nothing planned, just an informal get-together of like minds gathered in the sprit of celebrating a common interest and for the educational betterment of all involved.. 10.30am - Paipo was there with his bucket o' treasure doing a bit of trimsawing: 11.15am - Tama sitting at computer while Paipo does his thing. Conversation was first-rate: Tama and Paipo chatting away.. Actually it was a little hard to hear over the noise of the trimsaw and the stereo: 12 noon - Discussions flowed seamlessly from local affairs.. 12.25pm - to global politics.. 1.30pm - But it wasnt all serious; plenty of good laughs were had by all: 2.05pm - We had a few drinks.. 2.56pm - Then, like magic the sun came out as if to smile upon the merry-making: 3.45pm - sigh 4.15pm - 'Fine. So I guess you could call it a"chop"? I foolishly saved the hardest block of stone until last, when the day had warmed up and my back was starting to wear out. I was wet, dirty and tired by day's end, but I now have a nice big bucketful of jade (of various nationalities) to see me through the winter. I will post pics of my spoils soon. Also, (when he wasn't browsing the forums) I did see Tama putting in the odd minute on the tiny tang toki..?

A: Thanks Tama, yeah I did manage a couple of hours cleaning him up a bit and fluffing around with the facial details: "Hei-Toki/Tekoteko #1": Still a fair amount of refining to do before I can start to think about finishing him up. Tommorrow is only a half-day carving, but as long as there are no interruptions this guy might be heading towards the finishing line. Im fighting the urge to keep this little guy.. ugh, .. argh!
