Great new stuff LLT...but can't you put a little more imagination into your
painting? I love it...I have been experiencing a little bit of "carvers
block" and your latest work is helping me bust out. Way outside the box
and I love it.

R

Wow, compared to what I saw that Wed night at the gallery, you've done so much!
this is turning out amazing!

I like the 2-headed orongo birdman with his spiffy space outfit
The spacecraft design is great, nice touch with the retractable robotic claws
And that evil tree guy is so creepy lookin!

Kin this piece is crazy! So much going on! I love it!
have you had a chance to mull over what the back story will be?
I could see this turning into a tripped out kid's book!

Rawk on!

Oh I love, love, love this one!!!

RH

Me and the missus really extree like "War Path" and "Masked Dancer". How much are you asking for the "War Path" sketch? Those little sketches are miniature masterpieces, Ken!

Wow Ken you're really in high gear! great stuff all.

Drive by!
will write more later!
Gotta get down to bambooben's and hang some work!
here's a brand newbie and one i've been slowly revealing.....

I super-love the two blue birds at the bottom of the "Speak no evil" one. Those are the kind of small touches that make your art so interesting to stare at for awhile, not just glimpse at and move on.

Hello!
Wow!
What a past few weeks this has been-prepping for the big move next week!
I'll be 3 miles from the studio-so EXPECT more paintings in the future!
YAY!

Also had kingstiedye/travellin Jones/maiTai/Coco loco/Tikitastic (with megan and kim)/Squid and Bai and Babalu at the studio on Wednesday last week! Major TC Ohana visit!

Robb again-There's a bunch of little things in this one that are subtle, but have distinct meanings....You'll see after i post the details.....
But first.....
Braggin Rights!
The wife gots me a Crazy Al Chess Set and got bamboo Ben to build a board for it!
It's a thing of beauty...
here's some pics!

Props to Crazy Al for making this! I will play chess on no other board from now on!
I think he still has some left-you ALL should buy one!
Remember when i mentioned that I'd be now having my art studio all in one place instead of home and studio workspaces? No? Oh well.....here's my brand new setup for the studio library-almost done!

The Night the Island Came Alive

Chaotic Robotic

Attack of the Paddle People

[ Edited by: teaKEY 2008-08-18 15:50 ]

That is out of control! Awesome. So THAT'S how Benzart get his wood, looks like they de-bark it for 'em too. Lazy bastard.
How 'bout "Tahitian dream!" Nah, corny
That Chess set RULES. All the Marq's as pawns? Insane! 'cept with Ku as king, he'll use his own men for sacrifices!

Your studio looks so awesome! A bookworms lil haven!

I can't think of a name...I need to think about it a bit more...

yay for more painting!
Good luck with yer move!

:D

This guy LLT is the hardest working, gesso slinging, puff paint pimping, bleach dripping dyed tissue dabbing, ZippFizzz drinkin', book readin', deep think'n, underappreciated multi-mixed media artist around!!! I don't know how he channels his energy or where he gets all his trippy inspirations but I LUV THIS GUY!

Keep up da Grrrreat workz Kinny! :D

I could not of said it any better Jonessy.Ken is the man
My hats off to you and Bullet as well, so good to see you both at Oasis 8.
Cheers,
Trader Bill

The new pieces are so awesome, I couldn't keep looking at them. Seriously.

I'll have to go later, soak them up a little at a time.

Ken, I think you've gone so far beyond standard-issue Tiki that there is no coming back.

I think you have seriously hacked your way through the brambles and now have a COMPLETELY ORIGINAL STYLE.

They asked Giger how he did the same, and he replied that his work was a mishmash of Bacon, Dali, what have you.... He didn't realize how unique his work is, he only saw the influences.

There have only been a few artists with an unmistakable style, and you are one of the few.

It's my dream to achieve the same, and I am thrilled to see you achieve that loftiest of artistic goals.

CHEERS.

Ken, if Juxtapoz ever takes a vote on who gets to be in their mag, you get mine.

Here Here! I agree with Robb!

GROG posted on Mon, Sep 1, 2008 11:43 PM

GROg agree as well.

What's Juxtapoz?

KEN!!
Where Are You?!

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ...huh!?! WHA?!?!?
oh....must've dozed off....
but what a wonderful dream.....
i dreamed we moved and i got the studio all spiffied up and painted.....
Wait! it wasn't a dream! It was for reals!

anyways......
Sorry for the delay....
chose some simple titles for those two since we've talked last....
Thank you for all your suggestions....they only confused me more...
Totem-done (that's the See No Evil one...)
the Encounter-done (that's the Robot one)
Battle-done (an abstract shield battle painting)
the Thief-done (another painting you haven't seen yet....)
some drawins(got them scanned for you...)
But unfortunately, when i went to take some pics...the camera's battery wuz DEAD!
So i'll post all those as soon as I can get a derned battery!

teaKs-thanks for the titles.....
"Attack of the Paddle People "?
Huh?

surfintiki-you'll have to ask Ben if this is where he gets his wood...
i suspect it must be frome SOME kind of MAGIC tree....
I think Crazy Al has a few chess sets left-you really should Hop on it!
It's a real treasure!

4WDtiki-Bill!
hahaha.....
more like "this is your talent....on KWAWFEE!"
Stoked you're enjoying this one....
Wait'll you see it completely finished!
i puff-painted on some rivets and everything!

Howland-Brad!
Mahalos to you,Sir!
Can't wait to have you over if you ever travel Westward!
Hi Alicia!
Stoked that the "Celestial Vehicle" is in the office of such an esteemed friend and artist!

Babalu-thanks buddy!
looks like the creative fever has SMITTEN this place!
Can't wait to work on some more clay creations...
You're the Yoda of Clay!

Dirk-thanks man!
Been so busy, haven't been able to keep up with all youse arteests!
thanks so much for the motivation....

TikiShark!
Brad! Around 10 more days! Then it's TikiMagazine landing on das Planet Rooth show!
YAY! If you got some time-maybe we can play a game of chess at the studio! HIHO!

ravenne-I like that little NOMNOM guy too! His stance is right on! Plus he has the edge of technology with that two-pointed spear!

Jonesy-BLUSH!
Thank you Sir! i don't deserve any of those kind words...but I'll take em and store em away for an emergency!
You and Bullet are the two who should be in the limelight!
Your kindness, enthusiasm, knowledge, and deep appreciation of art and tiki make this community the solid rock that it is! LUVS you man!

1961surf-Bill!
Thanks man! see above...

Robb-you underestimate yourself....
Glad you appreciate the artistic pioneering spirit....
the hardest part about advancing a genre is taking it to unknown shores
but having the foresight to understand it before departure...
that way the original flame still burns....
That comment about Giger and seeing only his influences
should be a prod to other artists to study the old masters,to examine artists they want to emulate...very cool!
you DO have an unmistakable style,Robb!
DUH!
Thanks for the brainfood and those inspiring velvets!

GROG-ha ha ha....
yawn.....

tikithomas08-don't encourage him!

Robb and brad-whatever! You two need to be in there more than LLT!
I'm just a doodler-you two are bona-fide!

GROG-Juxtapoz is a magazine...an art magazine....it's flat fire wood with things printed on it!

Duddy-here I is!

Well, as soon as i get that camera battery-I'll catch you all up on the new paintings!

Here's a couple of drawings to tide you over....

first one is "Warpath" an elaboration on a sketchbook doodle.....
this one's going to the esteemed Robb Hamel-painter of darkness!

the second one is "the Disagreement" a revisit to those little Maori monkey brothers...

YAY!
Finally got a digital camera battery! Sorry for the delay!
allow me to get y'all up to speed.....
first off, added the finishing flourishes to
"the Expedition"
adding puff paints to certain areas to give it a bit of dimensionality and POP!
here's the whole kit and kaboodle...

this one's going in the Tiki Magazine show with 3 others....

here's a detail real close to show you an example of the puffpaint embellishments....

i sealed these under a high gloss varnish and the surface looks like glass!
Hope you can see this puppy in person.....
the gloss just juices up the colors!

here's the brothers...

here's a closeup of the lights on this explorer-intending to disorient the occupants...

here's a close-up of the brother's robot exploration vehicle....

here's the robot rowing moai-zooming thru the squishy smoke curls of the planet's volcanoes...

Here's a Zoom-in on them...

Up-close you can see the puffpaint embellishments on the Vanuatu-inspired rocket ship..

Here's a fellow wielding a rockin rickety personal transportation craft...

here's the giant PNG Agiba Skullrack giant robot performing tests on the volcanic bubbles...

A janus-headed orongo occupant steps out to provide some back-up...

the scout examines the situation from a cliff's edge...

the chief walks out onto a branch to greet the newly landed explorers...

the alarm is sounded and the villagers gather to meet these new arrivals....

this fellow falls to the ground in astonishment....

this bird of paradise warrior readies himself to defend the village....

and this gent points his spear at the newly landed crew....

seeing as the Tiki Magazine theme is "Tiki island lands on Planet Rooth"
i figured this one fully immerses itself in the theme....

Brief station break.....
banged these next two out over the week....
Both of these are painted on bamboo Ben wooden plaques with rope hangers...

these are both acrylic with paintpen...
"the Greeter"

and this funny little one....
"the Thief"

I just love these little Maori minkeys!

My friend Justin Barry gave me 3 2x2 foot wooden canvases
that he had painted drippy backgrounds on....
He moved to San Fran...
gonna miss him!
thanks Justin!

one, i kept the background
and the other, the ground was virtually eliminated,,,

Here they are...
the first....

"the Battle"
acrylic and paintpen on wood

i think this one may be headed to the Tiki Magazine show...
Hot outta the oven!
SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!

this is yet another abstract shield/battle/ambush piece
i thought i'd bust my chops on an actual painting
instead of a drawing..
more of a commitment,you see....

here's some closeups...
Optical blending in full-effect on this one
the colors seem to blend as you back away from the piece
(kind of the way it looks in the above piece...)

So here's some of the graphic hard edged lighting...

Note the leaves on the top intersecting with the arms....

Check out how the fist acts as the eye on this shield warrior....

This one has the arms and legs overlapping in a
Most Peculiar Way! :)

here's a good shot that captures the waaaaaay simple lighting and shadows on the flowers....
and that upraised leg on the left makes me GUFFAW!
haw!haw!

This is how i feel when i do my goofy dance...

This guy's leg got a great curve!

This is my favorite part of the piece....
i wanted to capture the shifting light of a forest
yet keep it very flat and stage-like...
and that piggy nose on the shield guy make-a me laugh!
ha!ha!

here's the second one...
this one i'll be letting the drippy ground painting show thru....

"Village and Waterfall"
paintpen on oil on wood

here's the first jam session on it..
No narrative,more landscape..more mood
i used indigo for the "blackline" to soften it...
Black would be too hard and harsh
this needs to be MEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOWWWW!
dig?

then i sealed it with Liquitex High Gloss varnish and KAPOW!
ready for the second application/layer...
the layers of glazes make the colors appear to lay on top of each other
floating...
here's the 6-hour session i finished today at the study
while watching" Memento" and "Clockwork Orange" at le studio.....

here it is!

i studied the plumerias in our new yard during ciggie breaks
and thought they'd look nice in front of the suggested waterfall
thanks to Justin's drips!

Here's some details showing the ferns that have been developing in some previous pieces...
Aso note the subtle lighting on the palm fronds through use of two shades of green
to define the leaves.....

look! a Hut!

more Huts!

and a third Hut!

there's areas of blotchiness and drippiness and sloppiness
that evoke the cold mist of a waterfall
and other areas that suggest bunches of flowers
and other areas that speak of torrents of water crashing down...
fun fuN fUN FUN!

and off-subject,but kinda along the abstract line
as well as the landscape theme....
this one is on a BOB ROSS canvas!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
where i laid down a light wash of warm grey ink
and tore up a few different colors of tissue paper
and laid em down,,,
then i squeezed more water on it ,peeled off the paper after about 45 minutes
and realized that, as wet as it was
that it would dry around Thanksgiving... :(
so i tipped it on it's side onto an OC Weekly
and let it drip down...

after a sufficient amount had dripped off
i grabbed a brush and swirled some tree trunks..
after it was dry i started the blackline....

also started another abstract that's going i don't know where..
and finished a few delightful drawings....
stay tuned for the remorseful cannibal!
Coming Soon! as soon as i can get it scanned.....
thanks for visiting and tolerating these rants.....
Myself and my typing fingers bid you all good night!

as promised late last night...
"the Remorseful Cannibal"
ink and colored pencil over tissue papr/inked watercolor paper..

A great idea that was finely executed. I almost feel a little sad too... or is that just hunger?

C

Lovely new ones! always so fresh and fun!!! Love your style!
(...I have a little suggestion for you... I was thinking looking at the puff paint you added.... What if..... For some painting, for example one at night, you added one or two little pieces of mirror in a star, or in one that has for example a canoe you added some pieces of wood... I don't know, something like that.... just an idea..)

Hey kiddles!
Man!
was the Tiki Magazine show ever inspiring!
so many great pieces,it was an honor to be a part of it!
Actually got to take brad parker/tikishark to the Juxtapoz art show in Laguna Beach
so expect some awe-inspiring work from that boy
seeing as he got a double-dose of AWESOME art in the space of a day!

until i see how you all enjoy the work....

Sleestak-Dave! love that freakin tattoo on rubber you did for the TikiMag show!
Thanks for helpin get the show on the walls!

thanks Thomas!

Babs! Gracias amigo!
Sorry Brad and i ran out of time to visit on Saturday...
We'll set aside a big chunk of time to play with clay before the Closing...
You,Sir,are da Man!

ravers-thanks sweetie!
what happened to you and Weegee?
thought you two were heading down...
missed a fun night...
That remorseful cannibal DID eat his best friend!
very astute you are!

TIKI KAIMUKI-it's mostly sadness....
probably because the hunger had been satiated..

Clarita-I used to add a lot of things to "dimensionalize paintings back when i started painted...
old toys, plants, scraps, etc. to build up a texture...
the mirror idea for the stars is a great idea!
Stay tuned....your idea deserves some mulling over!
thanks smiley!

In fact,Mahalos to all of you for visiting...
it's like having my friends over!
it IS having my friends over!

Welpers, finally got 2 whole blocks of Arches Watercolor paper
and just went off on some drawings!
here they is!

"study of a Manaia frieze" New Zealand
ink, bleach and sharpie on watercolor paper

Man! this one took a Looooong time to draw!

"study of an Asmat Canoe Prow"PNG
ink and bleach on watercolor paper

"Motherhood"
study of wooden Lake Sentani figure
ink, bleach and colored pencil on watercolor paper

'Been drawn to the Lake Sentani area (PNG) these past weeks..
the pleasing eyes ,the smiles :) ,and the simple abstraction of the face, silhouette, and limbs
achieve more than a lot of artists today can with more capable tools...
the secret's in the simplicity i guess...

here's one inspired by a tapa mask from New Britain,Witu Islands
"the Vision"
ink, bleach and colored pencil on watercolor paper

after all those exhaustive studies
i thought it would be fun just to go OFF a bit....

"the Hurried Servant"
ink and bleach on watercolor paper

Run! Run!

"the Inner Urges"
ink and bleach on watercolor paper

the struggle between mind and body
a universal theme drawn in a funny way. :)

"Masked Dancer"
ink and colored pencil on watercolor paper

this one may be going to Mr. Hamel
if he likes it!

and lastly.....
seeing how you all enjoyed the "Remorseful Cannibal"
i thought I'd bang out another cannibal piece....
"the Tasty Morsel"
ink and colored pencil on watercolor paper

YUMYUM! :)

well, that's it for now
What a great week full of TC Ohana and Great Art and Artists!
