Nice work mate, that big canvas is sweet. How about a nice shot from a distance with something to gauge the scale? :D Keep em coming mate!

GROG thought a scale was a gauge for measuring the weight of an object. Even though LLT's paintings are stuffed full of tons of deatail, they probabaly still don't weigh very much.

Even though LLT's paintings are stuffed full of tons of deatail, they probabaly still don't weigh very much.

Did an "Apocalypse Amoire Cabinet in 95 that weighed about 75 pounds/also did some closet doors that weighed a good 50! and don't get me started on this huge METAL monstrosity for the KOCE Butterfly Initiative....

That thing was way packed with detail and weighed a TON!
These Journey ones don't weigh very much-maybe 4-5 ponds max after all the coats of sealant and stuff...
(still cost a lil over a 100 bucks apiece to ship! Yikes!)
Frostiki-Sneaky-Tikishark-Hewey
I'm glad you're all as stoked as I am about the Journey! The freehand can be a bit intimidating, but careful planning/studies help boost the confidence level...Brad is right about that immediate creative output right on the canvas-there's nothing like it! As for scale (that's a valid term....you scale an image in photoshop and i don't see no weight...GROG must be too busy working on his TikiDog mug  and "witty" responses on TC....
The size of the pieces are 3 by 3 feet-get a yardstick and you can see how big they is!
Brad-the rope is tied and secured....HANG ON for ARTRIDE 2007! Actually I'll need that extra weight to slow down a bit and get the TikiMagazine pieces done too! Zoinks!

Well, I just had to say "Hi"! The work is as excellent and prolific as ever!

:D Hello Kiddies! :D
I'm very excited today!
Doyawannaknowwhy?
Cause i got my custom Cannibal Tiki from Clysdalle this weekend!
What a beautiful piece! the guy went all out! I'm honored to own this!
I haven't felt this giddy since receiving Paipo's Moai Tangata Manu! :D
Thank you suburbanpagan and Clarita! Great new work you BOTH got cookin!
TC artists....they're definitely a breed apart! Such talent and Ohana Luv!
Okay! Here's some photos i took today of Clysdalle's grand opus!
i requested only a 4-foot cannibal piece and requested a butterfly somewhere
on it....Simple,vague instructions, space to allow Dave's mind to graze
but still fenced in enough so he wander out of the pasture....
Here's the front....

Beautiful,eh? Here's a detail of the front near the top...

look! He's cannibalizing a Butterfly! Love the blue and lt yellow on him!
Perfecto!
Dave said that the wood he chose had these little holes punched in it....
He built the whole form around these five little holes....

Here's the Body...Love those legs!

Here's my beautiful wahine and wife Terrill posing next to this lucky Tiki
to give you a size reference.
What a fox!
She's like Vanna White in a sarong!

Here's a side view! I can't get over how cool the eyes are!

top side detail

bottom side back

Here's the back with the KU inspired back helmet/spine

and for the ladies.....the obligatory booty shot!
No junk in this trunk!

Thank you Dave! I'm really moved by how much you put
into this fellow....you Rock like Dolemite!
it's been a busy week and weekend...Didn't get much art done, but i did get
the main figures in the "Birth" panel all arranged and ready for some serious
brushwork! Here's the WHOLE first panel so far...

I did the oarsman in a sepia-he's going to be the underfigure, the one that will
peer out from the main canvas. The prow of the boat follows the movement of the
Figure bringing the child to the boat to begin the journey...The prow's top also approaches the Heavenly paradise in the clouds,a play on the size of the background oarsman and his boat...

i started some huts and palms to scatter amongst the clouds....
His profile fits in perfectly and will appear inside the rising sun

Here's a closeup of the child being escorted from Paradise into the boat.
In areas like this, the prow will barely be seen as the 2 figures deserve more emphasis....

and here's the boat, awaiting the beginning of life's journey...
This piece will be more blues and cool colors to convey a wet misty morning..
Note the clouds pouring down some rain,,

Here's the sketch I'll be gleaning the starting colors from.....

That's it for now! Stay Tuned! A lot more Surprises comin down the pipeline...
Very Soon!
Thanks for visiting!

ah shucks....Thanks LLT...he looks great it his new home with the native girls all over him!! sweet gig!

C

Beautiful wahine and beautiful butterfly tiki! Congrats!

Howdee Howdee!
Thank you soooooo much Clarita and Clysdalle! the Butterfly munchin Cannibal is enjoying his new digs as much as i enjoy just watching him sit there!
well, i put the Journey and the Cannibal Totem on hold for 2 nights because inspiration finally struck and grabbed me by the pantaloons! I have a big 4x3.5 (or something or other)
canvas that i gots for my birthday to do something for the Tiki Magazine art Show in November....I'm gonna be doing a wandering Island/Ship Island, but the time is not ripe yet... So,as i sat and stared at the HUGE canvas smokin a ciggie,it hit me! BAM! like emeril only better! why not do the PNG suspension/spirit hook piece? (the piece i'm referring to is "Arrival"-here it is....)

Anyways, i just splashed some water and ink down, swirling it about, and added a bit of olive and some other colors to delineate the palms and stuff,,,i may add some blueish for the water or i may keep it pink...not sure yet....
Anyways, here's what i got so far...

and a detail shot....

Now for the hard part....what vehicles should i use? seeing as this has a subtle sci-fi/ Chariots of the gods feel, i decided to do some research and look at suspension hooks/staffs/finials,etc. from Pacific cultures and see if they can evoke some type of flying craft...
13-14 pages later,i think i'm finally ready to make a decision...kinda! it's all a matter of picking and choosing...well, anyways, here's the studies i've been working on the past two nights! So many objects can be transformed with just a lil imagination! A lot of the studies are altered to suit the theme more-so purists beware!
What a Blur! I made notes next to each piece for reference and for you my good friends ...
So here they are!

Phew! my hands are tired of typing and drawing! i'm outta here! thanks for poppin by!!!

I love all these design and colour studies - mine are usually scribbled pen pieces, some of which are sneakily done at work - I always keep a notepad and pen next to my computer  I just love watching your whole process, it's great!

R

duude! I love the sketches! I like...i think it's the 10th page...? counts yeah the 10th page of yer sketches! I like that one the most, the design on the far right is killer!

The canvas so far looks very interesting, and I love the colors! very purdy! :D

I can't wait to see it evolve more!
the suspense!

Ooh and the tiki totem piccies are kawaii desu! (das "cute" in japanese, just so ya know!)

T

LLT- you paint like a child. So free and confident, I wish I never lost that part and feeling but I hope to get back to it one day. Maybe your work will be what helps me find it again.

I bet you almost ran out of the "Hawaiian" tiki designs cause you did them about a 1000 ways. The PNG stuff is wild. I wonder if you can simplify them more, I bet you will. You know which one I like of the hooks? I wish I had money to buy your work. I see tons of great designs that have my name on them but they keep passing my up. Alright, going back to study them again

It's not fair - you produce more drawings and good ideas for one piece than I do in a whole year! Gotta agree with TeaKey, the way you strip these down to the bare bones is really cool. I dig these babies:

The one on the right is incredible. They kinda remind me of the mentats in "Dune". I really hope this one's gonna be in the painting....

Another classic kinnified design (stilt step)- looks like he's riding a rocket-powered pogo stick. Those little dancing/arms linked guys are found all through Polynesia and are one of my favourite motifs. I've been trying to come up with a concept for them for ages. I don't know about the Austral variants, but in the Cook Islands they are called Tikitiki Tangata. I've got a couple of Mangaian versions on my arm!

F

Damn LLT, how the heck do you keep pumping such great ideas out so quickly? I agree with Paipo on the you come up wiht more ideas for one study than I do in a year.

psst! the mugs are finally available!

Saw that last Night and LLT, your Mugs are Really Gorgeous and Even a Print. I gotta figure out something here cuz I Just gotta have,
Drool, Smile, All tha \t stuff.

B

Wowwie!

LLT, those mugs are SPECTACULAR!! The tag team of yourself and Master Squid is unstoppable! Those stencils used on the sides are totally, totally sweet! I don't have a mug collection....that's going to change right now. These mugs are some of the best I've seen all year.

I've said it before, I'll say it again, you cats in Hollywood rock the hardest!

Thanks Benz!
these mugs would still lose in a tagteam with Vicious and Malicious! It's always good to hear from the Grand Ancient Master! :D
Babalu
Thanks! This never could have been realized without the Master Skillz of Sir Squidley and the keen instincts of Holden! Thanks!

Those stencils used on the sides are totally, totally sweet!

actually sir, those are decals! Theyre special magical waterslide decals, that are applied after the first firing then given a clear coat of glaze and fired again! the problem was that the glazes change color after firing,sooooooooo.....that was quite fun!
Hewey, ravers, teaKs,paipo, and frostiki...Thanks you also! I'll answer all your questions and have some more surprises soon! thanks for your patience....and paipo...I'm puttin that guy in the painting just for YOU! :D

B

LLT,

Of course...decals. Sorry, my "slip"...no pun.

I Look forward to meeting you at Oasis.

Dude, you've got artistic diarrhea. You crap that stuff out faster than Bamboo Ben downs beers, and baby THAT is FAST!!!

Maybe you should give Tikishark some of that artistic fiber you've been eating. He's going to bust a gut just trying to squeeze ONE out.

Hey Ken-

What great stuff! You are a talent all the way around! Those mugs ARE cool too with all of your intricacies (is that spelled right?). I like the Clysdalle tiki of yours too. I just saw it on Sketchkult, but didn't know it was yours.... Anyhow, I agree! You rock!

Uh! My gut hurts!!

wow!, i just saw the mugs for the first time;- what an incredible realization by you three. they're just awesome!!

Is there anyway we can make a wish list for TC, so I can put the xtra groovy mugs on my list and wish that someone gets them for me?

Ooga-Mooga does have a wishlist feature where you can post which mugs you want. Many of the mugs in my collection have made it into my hands as gifts because friends looked at my wishlist to see what I wanted. :)

R

sweeeeeeeeet! buy your mugs now! they freakin ROCK...the pictures do not do them justice!

Love them! and the mugs are GINORMO!!!

:D

Ahhh, KEN the mugs are AMAZING!!!!!

Aloha friends!
long time no see....
Well, there was Tiki Oasis, which was an absolute blast! If you haven't seen the available pics,go check em out in California events...also,don't forget to go to collecting tiki and check out kingtiedye's roadtrip with Jonesy...it's a hoot! After all that Hullabaloo, the mugs came out...and then this wekend i had to go to Vegas for the MAGIC/Project apparel conventions for work.....Man! Add domestic callings to that and I've had hardly anytime to paint or even sit still for a second! But,duty called and I've been squeezing out some art every available free moment! especially with a TikiMagazine Art Show looming over the horizon! So, after speakin with y'all for a spell,i'll share some new goodies with ya!
Sam-thank you sir! Glad you like those muggies! you know the behind-the-scenes on making mugs-so to hear your kind words is a true compliment! And yes, Clysdalle is a true carving genius,as is Mr. Squid! Anyways, hope to see you again soon!
greentikipat-Thanks! Sometimes dreams do come true! i'm hoping to team up with Dave and Holden again in the future!
Sophistatiki-dream list?Maybe i'll have to donate a set to the museum of polypop, and you can use 'em when they're not on tour! :D Thank you my dear!
Ravenne and Brad-thanks friends! Hugs to ya both!
And a Big Mahalo and hugs to all of you who have seen and loved Oli-Oli,Kakaka,and Pupule! Your encouraging words and delightful smiles makes me want to make a hundred more mugs!
And a big shout out to all the new and old friends at Oasis! All of y'all were so nice and made me feel like a family member!!!!!
Time for art now...
first off,we'll start slowly with 2 cannibals from my sketchbook....

and "the Cannibal King's Ceremonial Garb"
this one was in response to a discussion with kingstiedye as to how many skulls could be crammed onto a Cannibal King's outfit....

Could've probably put more in there, but this was a quickie...
Here's an ink piece where i blacklined over an abstract background....these are fun because the element of surprise is a constant, and I likes to be surprised!!!!
"the Meeting"

and here's some progress on my "Cannibal Totem"...finally started getting the lighting going on the bottom figure...

Gotta love those Tangata Manu/Orongo/Birdman eyes!
Now onto the task at hand-gettin that Tiki magazine Art Show painting done!
it all started with this ink drawing,if you recall..

Chariots of the Gods meets the South Seas!
Well, I finally chose the main contenders for the piece and decided to work them out on a big ink drawing before hitting the canvas,,,,

Here's the BIG Piece so far!

and here's some details in progress....
Just like pompele,i used ink as a ground-sealed it-then started over it with the blackline in paintpen to get all the forms before the lighting and background are started....
Here's a vehicle for Paipo! represent!

as you can see,I roughed out the silhouette first freehand on all these guys...

and another...

and another...

and another...

and another with a little bit of the texture and lighting started....

and a little smile for you all!

well, that's all I've gotten done for now,but the Labor Day weekend is right around the corner,so expect more soon!!!! Thanks for visiting!

"this one was in response to a discussion with kingstiedye as to how many skulls could be crammed onto a Cannibal King's outfit...."

24 skulls, not bad. But next time don't forget to add the skull tattoo, skull knee-pads, skull ring, and skull toe ring.

This is definitely your next Tiki Farm mug. I know for a fact that Squid is pretty good at doing skulls so this one should be easy.

Crap, I didn't count one, so thats 25 seen 28 all together.

I can dig it! I like the way the dudes at the bottom of the menage a cinq have transmogrified into a Hawaiian style. I hope one of those inkwash blobs is earmarked for the Marq pogo-rocket-stiltstep guy.
I better get quicker at laying down my ideas...that Lono-esque dude is very similar to something I've been mulling and sketching for a few months now (except for one major element). I hope mine looks different enough that no-one will accuse me of plagiarism!

Good Morning!
teaKs!
It's actually 27 skulls! (there are 4 skulls on the chair he's sitting on! I know....3 skulls are IMPLIED,but they're nonetheless there or the chair/stool thing would collapse!) B-plus! Thanks for taking the time out to count them for us! :D Would love to do a mug in this flavor! Skull kneepads? Reminds me too much of an old goth girlfriend..... :D
Paipo!
Mr. Eye-Poppin Action! (can't figger out the trademark icon...) I decided to give those broken back fellahs more of a Hawaiian vibe (ie: some of the bowls and neckrests out there) Good Eye! and yes.... The Marq Pogo Rocket Stilt is one of those smaller blobs so worry not!
Cannot wait to see what kind of Lono you're gonna cook up!!!
Plagiarism?
I just got a call from Lono Inc. and Skull Co. about that!
The tiki biz is kinda like the tattoo biz...elaborations and additions on existing themes....
One of the purposes of the visual arts is to act as a stepladder up to the next idea, sharing and studying what others have created and trying to better or advance them! It's one big Mutual Inspiration Pact! Hi Ho!

Fabuluuuus!!! I am sorry I missed you at the Tiki Oasis marketplace (wasn't staying in the hotel, so couldn't shop Saturday...and drove home early on Sunday). I just know your stuff is awesome live, I'll be shopping at the next Oasis though. I love your wild pinks. Don't forget the skull on the inside of that fellas head...another implied skull....but pretty dayumed important. :)

Ladies Love Tiki Ken-LLTK,

This big ass pink painting is very cool! Love how you do all these layers of process and photodocument/explain them.

Word is Bond!
ST

PS
I DID NOT vote for Larry Craig, lol!
:drink:

Vamp-Sorry we missed ya at oasis! the wife and i had a SUPERFABBOATOMICBLAST there! Seriously considering Oasis next year! It'll be just before my tragic suicide so buy up all you can when you're there! Glad people are diggin the pink/magenta...i wanted something with a feel of morning/storm/and other-worldliness! As for skull-counting....I'll leave that up to teaKs from now on....He can be the official skull counter for this thread..and brad's too! Speaking of which....stay tuned!Mahalos!
Sneaky! Hey buddy! You know the dealio on big canvases/paintings! The pink does seem to envelop the viewer in a crazy anti-Rothko fashion!!!! I agree and love how everyone shares their processes -just helps us all with our own questions and experimentations!Thank you!
Word is Bond! Gold Bond...medicated powder! :D
Alright teaKs-bust out the calculator 'cause i gots 2 surprises for you! It was about 90 in the studio last night after work,so i piddled a bit on some pieces that need finishing, then busted out these 2 ink/bleach/sharpie drawings instead! Extreme stuffy heat is more conducive to drawings-a little freer and less worry about holding concentration and stuff...like playing!!!!
So here's what my heat-addled cranium popped out last night!!!
the first..."Cannibal king at Rest" ups the ante in the skull department! That's a lot of victims!

Looks like I have enough cannibal pieces to officially call it a JAG!
this is my favorite of the two....
and the second, produced between 11 and 2:30 ...a little rougher around the edges, but for an old fat fart in a hot studio,I'd have to say it suffices!
"the Cannibal's Incantation"

Alrighty! Time to go to the studio/sauna ! Enjoy my friends!

Wow, much much better. I think this qualifies you as a Genesis Book record holder for most skulls adorned on a king at one time. Soak in the fame. All it will take now to win will be if the skulls had skulls for eyes and no one is that crazy.

Those pieces are fab, I really like the energy in the second activated pose. Pump up the jam LLTK!

LLT, nobody can make cannibals as cute and colorful as you can. It's sort of a mind bender- sure it's all Bright and happy looking, but it's about eating people too! HA! I dig it! Cool seeing the big Chariots of the tiki gods starting. Really gets the mind going on what lighting and coloring will take place... great stuff!

Tiki Magazine! YEP! See you there!

C

Beautiful colors ended!! And congrats on the gorgeous mugs!!You have your unique-cute-brilliant style showing in everything you do! Best wishes

Kenny,
Great work as usual!
Those two cannibal king paintings would make great giclee prints for your TC fans. Hint...Hint...

Thanks for the hydration warning Ravers! You're a Good Egg!
teaKs! thanks for being my official counter!Glad you enjoyed them! i may bust out one more ULTIMATE SKULL filled cannibal king when i get a free moment! As for the "Genesis" Book of world records...wrong book! Both Great reads! As for the skulls in the eyesockets....no one would be that crazy....
Sneaky-i'll keep pumping the jams if you bring the peanut butter! I think the splash and slash backgrounds and the frantic "OHMIGARSHI'MGONNABURNUPIN THIS DANGBLASTEDHOTSTUDIO!" vibe helped with the energy for these!
Brad-VROOM! Thanks for all the Stoke!!!!!Looks like you're also fully pumped for the TikiMag show! ZOWIEE! This is gonna be a blast! Tag-teaming on the canvas all the way up to Opening night!!!! Like Sneaky said-PUMPUPDAJAM!

Well, Yesterday whilst in the Torture hotBox that is a studio with one window.....i finally finished "the Lonely Island"...almost..there's still one area i wanna give a lil more attention to,but for all it's worth-it just needs a good hour and then a frame prettification...so here it is....
My first piece for the Tiki magazine Art Show and a fulfillment of the "Tiki Island" theme....

I haven't worked on it since May 5th,so i decided to buckle down and bust it out whilst playing GODFATHER2....nothing like an epic to kick ya in gear!!!! Here's some details to check out...
the hut and the poor fellar almost falling off!

a little bit of transparency in the water.....

the water slapping against this guy turned out okay!

Here's the top half...i think i need some birds flying around just for scale...

here's a hidden lono-just chillin in the vegetation!

Help! i'm falling!

i like this guy....waiting for Something..

Also did a lil work on the 2nd piece for the show!
here's the whole thing...

and here's some vegetation/island detail-a bit more subtle than the vehicles so it looks farther away.......

and here's Paipo's favorite space vehicle getting fleshed out a bit more!

and that it all for now! Goodnight!
