As much as I like all of the new stuff, there is still a particular sailing warrior I'm still waiting to see to completion.

Actually........
I'm just warming up to re-approach those 4 Journey canvases...
Stay tuned teaKs!

As always I'm like "ahso - that's how he does it!"

...so why don't MY completed LLT forgeries look authentic? I'm using the same techniques as LLT for Cripes-sake  ?

All joking aside I like the two newbies on today's easel (or in this case the table) - the new Cannibal King and MoonBird images ROCK!

Wow! Thanks for sharing these Grog! If I wasn't on the opposite coast I would have loved to crash that party and jam some art with those Tiki Gods!

hello Ohana!
Well, just recovered from an Awesome Artjam/Squid Send-off party last weekend and finally ready to show you some stuff!
Thanks to all who attended and my apologies to those i didn't "tap" for this gathering...
The studio can only Artjam so many folks and the slots filled up fast as add-ons started comin in....
Again,my apologies...
thanks to all who attended to send our talented boy off to the Great NorthWest!
Feel like I'm losing a brother....
Anyways.....

TikiG-Thanks man!
One question.....
WHY would you want a painting to look like an LLT
when it can look like a TikiG?
I'd say that style suits you better...a better fit! :)
Glad you likes em!
i have your 3 shrunken pieces BTW
Estala dropped em off here so they are safe....

GROG-I'm no longer listening to you!
You wear a Fannypack!
In fact, you LOST your FANNYPACK after the ArtJam and called here to find it...
You need to thank Zoey for remembering that YOU WERE WEARING IT WHEN YOU LEFT!
Sheesh.....

Sneaks-Mahalo,Man! Glad we can inspire each other on such a regular basis!
See you next RAP BATTLE on SHOUT! :)
werd.

Brad-Thanks buddy! A Cathedral of Tiki is in order!
I'll do the Stained Glass and you can do the Altar! :)

Robb-Quit encouraging Ernie...he wears a FannyPack!

Babalu-So great seein you on Saturday!
Total Roast!
"Virgins from hell" Get it on NetFlix...NOW!
Awesome collab with Squid and that new mere-hare incredible so far!

Ernie-Thanks for posting those shots...FannyPacker.

Zerostreet-if you're ever in the neighborhood, just holler and I'll gather the troops!

Anyways, here's what i got so far on the MOONBIRD....

Started the shading a bit this weekend..

and the Fishies!

and here is the last of the Progress shots for
"the Cannibal King's Dinner"
(after the Art Jam..)

aaaaaand Finished!

Here's some details ..

RAWR!

and his O-WRONG-O Bowl!

and a view of the painted sides....

Mahalos for visitin! Talk atcha soon!

Nice! Love The Cannibal King's Dinner! Especially the bowl, love that a few rib bones or something are sticking out! Nice work!

Is that painted on one of those gessoed boxes? How do you like working on that?

M

The cannibal king motif has always been one of my favorites. There must be like ten different versions of him hidden in this thread and they are all great. Bones bones bones!

kinny, Moonbird - helps me heal, Wendy

B

thanks for posting the art jam shots. great to spend time with mr squid before he headed up to the great white north!

and the cannibal king looks AMAZING! congrats.

Mr Toe

Drive-BY!
VROOOOOOM!

zerostreet-Thanks for the enthusiasm!
the Cannibal King still has a few ribs to go!
Maybe they're BABY back ribs!!
wanna sculpt one of dem bowls........
already got a name.... "O-WRONG-O" bowl!
those mounted canvas on board with the thick museum wood sides is great!
My artist friend Zoey said you can make it yourself
lay down the gesso
lay some fabric down on top
and lightly lift it off
and BAM! the same as a textured canvas!
i liked it.
a lil pricey at the art store
but kinda worth it
and i got it on Sale!
:)

MarkusK-yeah,thought it was about time to see what the cannibal king was doing......
So glad that you and so many others like him...
He just cracks me up...all roar and noise
and yet,if you look at him...he's a chubby little loudmouth!
hmmmm..... maybe i should stop doing self-portraits....
Thanks again for all the kindness and for visiting this thread!

Wendy- Love you,darling!
Anything i can do to help you recover....
Just take good care of that left hand
while the right one heals!
:)

Toesy!
Love you man! It was a BLAST nailing everyone down in one spot for a visit!
Thanks for helping to make it happen!
and thanks for the props...
the feeling is mutual!
most days....

Here's some progress shots on the "MoonBird"
to help my darling Wendy heal!

"MoonBird"
Got some shading in
gonna get that done
seal it
then pump it up
with the lighting more!!!

Here's the chief and "paddles" closer-up...

Fishies!

Palm!Grass! Flowers!

and an extreme close-up to show the colored pencil shading up close....
it blends well as you back away from the piece!

That's it for now!
Gotta Fly!

"MoonBird" is A-Maze-ZING!
So sad I was not part of the fan-tastic art jam! So much talent in one studio! Wowzers! U RAWK!

Brad-Thanks my friend!
Your latest is GORGEOUS!
Especially the orchids!
TIKI JEDI MASTER!
and a mag cover and article!
Glad you're finally gettin what you've deserved and worked so hard for!
Totally thought of you during the Art JAm...
wish you were closer!
Next time you can make it down here
I'll gather up the tribe for one!
Miss you Buds!

Well....sorry for the wait...i was talking to TikiShark...
Hope that wasn't too rude...

ANYWAYS....
Have a "Journey" looming in the future i should finish
and a 5 foot pew commission and 8 Bible-based pieces
and possibly MOasis/goin Primitive
startin to get serious about getting the website up and full o' art
and another SECRET event to prep for during the summer
and rumor has it..
maybe some new mugs or something...
etc. etc. ad infinitum ...
Man! if i didn't have this day job i could actually get stuff done!
but i would have to like the taste of cardboard and book pages
and live in a box....
and that ain't gonna happen!
Ever try to hang paintings in a cardboard box?
it ain't pretty!
Anyways....
"MOONBIRD" is Finished!
Layers and Layers....
Here!
I'll show you some of the progress shots
(Too Busy to post-so i just shot...you know how it is when you get on a ROLL!)

Here you can see the initial colored pencil shading to split up the planes and give it a initial depth...

Some areas i rendered the shadows
other areas,the light....

Here you can see how rough it looks close-up,but i think this is actually BIGGER than actual size!
Man! That was a lotta areas to render
Sometimes you'd catch one that got away
and then have to hunt for that color and fill it in! :)

This is before all the lighting on the fishies.

Here's the Palms before they got their colored pencil shading...
After all the colored pencil was finished
it was sealed with a matte acrylic varnish
and worked over after that with cel vinyl
(it stuck just right on the surface)
and then it was DONE!
so her it is.....

"MoonBird"
Acrylic,cel-vinyl,and colored pencil on masonite
16x20
private collection

Here you can see the additional layers scumbled over the pencil shading
and,of course,the night needed stars
which were rendered over the entombed colored pencil layer..
a good view of the contrast on the cape and paddle
that was an initial red acrylic base
with a brick red colored pencil for shading
the palms also ..
an indigo colored pencil layer
sealed, and then rendered over with a happy bright green....

Above is a closer shot of the moonBoid...
after the initial indigo shadowing
i went in with white and the same blue of the ocean and lit it a bit more feathery-ish...
Also, you can see the white and lime green grass over the initial grass texture
to give it a multilayered look
as well as enhance the shadows more...

Here's a close-up of the palm and especially the grass..
very stylized,but it adds a welcome texture,i think! :)

and lastly..Close-up of the fishlies and to give you an idea of the water...
Well, this one was a fun diversion...

and speaking of diversions..
While awaiting for this to dry
i thought i'd just wing something....
So,after consulting yon sketchbooke
i banged out...
"Frenchy"
acrylic and cel=vinyl on masonite
16x20

Here's a close-up
so you can see the initial pencil under the sloppy layers..

i kinda like it messy
but bias is one of my stronger traits!
:)
Talk with y'alls soon!
and again....Mahalos for all the lovely things you say and bring to this thread!
it'a a prime motivator!

so i thought i'd play it safe.....:)
Thank you Wendy....for so many things!
I hope this makes you as happy as i felt painting and preening over it!
i am honored ,yet again,to be in your hut....
BIG HUGS at Oasis,doll!
:)

Nice work Kenny! And congrats Wendy, that's a great piece!

 OK, maybe I'm just jealous!

Ken I love your "stained glass" style of painting and this is another great example. I'm glad it went a GREAT home where it will be loved and surrounded by lots of other tiki art

MDM YOU TEASE. MY KINNY WORKS OF ART ARE AT THE FRAMER TODAY, WE PICK THEM UP TOMORROW IF THEY TOLD THE TRUTH ABOUT WORKING TONIGHT. I'LL POST THEM HERE WHEN WE HAVE THEM. HUGS TO YOU BOTH, WENDY

[ Edited by: danlovestikis 2011-05-28 16:28 ]

HOWEVER I DID ONE MAJOR BUMP SO I COULD PUT MY PAINTING OF KINNY WITH HIS NEWEST PIECE OF ART. AS I SHOW HIS WORK I CAN SAY THIS IS THE ARTIST. THE OTHER FINE WORK IS IN A TIKI COLLECTION ROOM.

YOUR ART IS IMAGINATIVE AND BEAUTIFUL.

THANK YOU KINNY FOR ENHANCING OUR COLLECTION AND GIVING US SUCH JOY, WENDY AND DAN

wow awesome so good

Ah! Where does the time go?
Here's aquick drive-by with a brand new piece that blends a few styles
quite almost successfully,to be honest... :)

zerostreet-Many mahalos you my friend,it makes me so happy to bring some smiles and palpitations to the ohana!

Mike-that Blondie cartoon is not entirely correct....i usually am whittling with a big knife when i give my pitch! :)
Thank you for the nice thoughts and i am glad too that it went to a good home...
and you shouldn't feel a shred of jealousy, just happiness that art is spread about the globe in a myriad of styles!!!!

and Wendy-thank you for ALL that you do
your perseverance, talent and creativity astonish me all the time.
i am honored that a piece of my heart is living in your hut!
I'm sure the moonBird and the rowers are making many friends with the metropolis of paintings and mugs and wonderful objects you have in there!
mahalos and besos!

marcus-i thank you..... Did Toe give you that hug when he was down undah?
or did he keep it to himself?
Admirable scene you boys started down there.....muchos kudos!

Welp.... work is looming so i gotta be quick!
This piece,like i said earlier
is trying to blend cubist plains that i normally save for the abstracts and the stained glass pieces
and throwing it into my quickie "cartoon realistic" style...
it was fun yet daunting, but it makes me wanna do more!

"the Invocation"
acrylic and cel vinyl on masonite
16x20

here's a close-up of his face...

drummin hands

some of the foreground and the "music" spiral ling upward to the gods...

more music sailing into the sky....

and my favorite part...the moon!
where the plane really got broken up!

That's it! Gotta go!
Thanks for all the love,Ohana!
:)

I love it Ken!!!! I also like the restrained use of paint pen in this one....mahhvelous!

restrained?!?!?!?
Practically non-existent,old buddy!
Only bust the paint pens out for special occasions
and when i want a certain look!
it's mostly about paint and brushes now!
a bit more time-consuming tho...

Really an amazing piece of work... the illusion is beautiful!
New Fav!

I wasn't sure if the white highlights were paint pen or no.... Anyway I have wanted to see some brush only Ruzic pieces for some time and it sure doesn't disappoint! This piece is MASTERFUL!!!!

Hello Folks!
a little pre-work posting...
i got up early for this,so please....no shouting this morning...
thank you for your cooperation....

Sneaks-here comes another one ALL BRUSH,baby!
You'll be surprised at the amount of these there are already out there...
i segue-wayed into it slowly....imitating the strokes of the paintpen
and just using a brush...... Outlines are a pain in the behind to render with a brush
so there are a lot pieces that have acrylic grounds with a paintpen outline....
here's an oldies that's All acrylic...
"See No Evil (etc.) totem...

GROG-Thank you my funny fannypacker!
Thorsten has a great unique style...
I've been looking at Braque's,Picasso,Thorsten, and a slew of others who have delved into this look..
What an eyeful of great works! They've been so inspiring...
I only hope i can bring a little LLT to this way of painting and contribute to its advancement...
Hack? an artist never should work in a complete vacuum
it's a mutual inspiration club,remember?
Now go get your Warner Brothers jacket dry-cleaned or something
i gotta go talk to my other guests.....

Wendy-Wow! How sweet! Thank you for helping to spread the love!
Your "red Dirt Parking lot" is amazing!
I hope they place our art next to each other in the Scootiki exhibition
so they can chat it up at night after everyone's gone....
Hugs to you,my amazing ambidextrous friend!

Brad-Thank you! It's really enjoyable wandering off the path for awhile
and meeting a new style to play with!
It's even better when a good friend and fellow artist chimes in with such kind words! Thanks Brad!
Miss you man!

Well..... played with another abstract this week
when i should have been working on other things.....my bad...
But when the spirit moves you
one's gotta follow it!

Here is a step-by-step of my latest for you to check out and see how it's done at the batcave..
It's called "Visit of the Sun"

Step 1 slather Olives and mustards and magentas on masonite

Step 2 Draw it out on the DRY surface with a white pastel pen
(so you can wipe off the excess with a wet cloth

Step 3 start on the shadows with a Raw Umber

Step 4 start filling in other colors
(the palms/flowers/the Sun's rays/etc.)

Step 5 Start applying shadowing on those colored areas
Also begin applying the grass and the lighting here and there...

Here's some close-ups before it get's the coup-de-gras...

and here is the finished piece
after painstaking washes of sepia, blending the mustard
with the other colors to get a soft lighting and such..
It's a day scene and i wanted it softer than the Invocation piece
so i held back and didn't add any white or cream hi-lights....

Here it is...
This is the most accurate shot for color
"Visit of the Sun"
acrylic and cel-vinyl on masonite
16x20

i had a spare Monkeyman frame around,so i framed it! :)

Here's some close-ups of the final painting

Thanks again fer a'visitin and saying "Aloha!"
:)

W

WOW!

So much eye candy. Love it Kinny!

Chris

Step one - just glob on some colors and smear it around
Step two - turn it into a gorgeous painting
Step three - make it look easy

Kinny, have we seen your scooter piece yet?

Great "How to" and a fine piece!!!! Thanks for sharing your process Ken!

Another Quickie Posting before work!
Hope y'alls had a happy Fourth!
Spent 1 day over at Queen Kamehameha's in her lovely saltwater pool
and the rest of the time
was spent as a hermit
celebrating the holiday
safe in the art-bunker!

WestADad-Glad you enjoy these ocular treats!
They're very high in Calories,so view with caution,Chris! :)

Mike!-you pretty much summed it up...
i just use more analogies and adjectives!
Yes! You've seen my scooter piece(s)
i didn't do one with a scooter
cause there are none in the world i paint in....
"the Cannibal King's Dinner"
was made especially for that show

and this
"Dream of the Agiba Skullrack" will be keeping him company!

And ,to support the theory that
the Squeaky Wheel DOES get the Grease
i have a more involved step-by-step/progress
on this new piece

Sneaks!-No problemo art-brother!
Man! We gotta hook up for a weekend artjam someday!

Here's a new piece I'm creating for the lucky 13 Tiki Highway event in a few weeks at Don's....
Figgered i might as well get ONE new thing done
and then it's off to a crapload of projects and commissions
some Tiki
some not...

start with a 16x20 piece of masonite
and just pencil in your picture

(this one i just went for it-basing it on a few older approaches i had created for some huts)

Here's a close-up of the pencil..
Daddy likes it rough.

Lay in some olive in the vegetation areas....

Add some lighter green,a happy limey color
to establish some light hitting some planes...
and start washing in a mud-grey/hazel-ish for the wood
and washes of mustard for the hut....

close-up!

start laying the hazel over the hut to get some shadows and layered looks

ZOOM IN!

work more brown in for shadowing
this will be the lighter shadow as i will be adding a burnt umber later
Started on the blue-going in there with washes of color
the raw masonite just soaks it UP!

More More More of it and here is where i am ,as of last night..

it's gettin there...

That;s it! Gotta get to the ol' dayjob!
Thanks for visitin!
:)

Awesome Ken! Love the Cannibal King's Dinner! And those process shots on the new one are great. I love when artists post these because no two work the same way...offers tons of insight into the process!

LLT never would have guessed....

" didn't do one with a scooter

"the Cannibal King's Dinner"

I was confused until I looked at the official Call to Art
"works combining Lambrettas and Tikis are heavily weighted but not required"

Now I get it!

The new hutt is kickin' butt! :D

Sound like LLT jealous of GROG' sexy bald pate and fanny pack. GROG buy LLT a fanny pack so LLT can carry his drawing tools around also. LLT probably not look as good as GROG with a shaved head, so sorry GROG not able to do anything about that. You'll just have to keep paying for hookers.

talked to Joe (ElroyArtSpace) and explained that to him when he asked me to participate....
I'm not a car/vehicle guy at all... they don't have that technology there....Travel is by foot/bird/or raft...
Tho i did a few Big Daddy Roth style tees back in the 90's for Rusty Surfboards when i worked there, but that was it....not my thang.....
Let the Toe and those other scenesters paint them...not me.
