and we left there SO inspired and SO Amazed and STOKED
I was beside myself, being a BIG admirer of this gent
and Art Fever for the First Quarter is Installed!
It's such a joy that art can do that!
Thanks for the STOKE!
:)

Gonna start with a SEMI-Tiki thing and then will go into the HARDCORE TIKI/POLY-POP stuff
m'kay?

"the Jungle Pool"
ink and sharpie on Aquarelle paper
This is a study for a mural we did in our lunchroom at work

Tom painted a Dodo with a Third Eye

The space we had to work on was DAUNTING...HUGE,but about 10 of us gathered together
and did our THANG!

i got an out-jutting wall and the corner area...

We both did a lil bit more and fine-tuned and finished our areas...but i'm waiting til they get the whole lunchroom area done...it's gonna have astroturf, trees,a telly, foosball, video games/arcade games,a library,etc....our bosses are pretty cool....

Anyways...Here's the piece from the Clash of the Titans Closing Reception
Tom and i were Live Painting, but it was more of a gabfest
so it took a while to finish...

"the Patient listener"
acrylic and cel-vinyl on wood
with a Superb Bamboo Ben frame!
30x20.5" framed
17x22.5" image
private collection
already! :)

Here's the painting by itself...

Here's some close-ups to enjoy!
a Delighted lil PNG shield fellow
(maybe P-i-NG-o's cousin!)

here's the patient moai mug
listening to his drunken gabby friend

some details of the interior
a bird/croc canoe...

Some more background for you to see

a happy little Bowl, shielded from the incessant babbling behind him...

This chap appears cool as a cucumber!

a dazed wall shield with a palm-carved tiki in the background...

BlahBlahBlahBlah

aaaaaaand to finish this week's entry
Here's an "in Progress" piece for Sunday's Bowl-o-rama at the Tonga hut
Here's a link to the Thread..
http://www.tikicentral.com/viewtopic.php?mode=viewtopic&topic=44693&forum=17&start=0

MP (Empee!) cut out some shapes and mounted them on a piece of velvet with a beautifully carved frame
he made one for Toe and one for myself....

NOTE: these pieces are DIMENSIONAL..so they APPEar to pop outward
BECAUSE THEY REALLY DO! :)

you can KIND OF see how much they stick out...makes for a difficultchallenge
and with only a week...DAUNTING!

Well, here's where i am as of today...

i'll be playing with fooling the viewer's eye,so check back here this week..

Welpers!
That's all i got for today!
Hope it makes for a worthwhile visit!
Mahalos for all the visits!

Congrats on red-dotting your Laluzapalooza piece before the show even opened! I heard they had over 15,000 submissions for that show and our very own Mr. Ruzic was selected to be a part... You rock, my good sir.

I also want to thank you for sharing your sketch for the lunchroom mural... I always appreciated seeing your WIP pics. I know you are really busy, so even a quick peek at that preliminary sketch out was a nice bonus.

Hey Jason!
Mahalo...
for the heartfelt sentences and congratulatory words!
Hanging at la Luzis a nice validation to my "fine art" side
the first 15 years of this artistic journey..
right before

Last year i submitted
"River and Moonlight"

but i think it was TOO abstract/outside their comfort zone of acceptance
and TOO Tiki,or maybe it just wasn;t up to snuff
it's a mystery...
because i think THAT piece is much more "Fine-Arty" than the woodburn....
But with the NOVELTY of pyrography, and the fantasy-based theme
one could see why they picked it..
makes me smile....

i hope to see MANY friends that night
AND to see some AMAZING Art and meebee meet some fellow freaky artist types
:)
inspiring!

i apologize that the offering below had no studies before completion
empee sent it with the composition and initial shapes
already mounted...all i had to do was paint em...

On 2013-02-25 17:16, Sneakytiki wrote:
Outstanding mural Ken!

Sneaks!
Have YOU been submitting to the laLuz shows?
Your Presidents NEED to be up there!
You Sir,are a TRUE artist
one i aspire to someday be....
Murals are fun...this would be my 4th or 5th
the smallest 8x10-biggest 8x24 when they were building the
RONALD REAGAN COURTHOUSE ..
this one was peanuts....but a nice opportunity to cut loose on a big space!

Okay... is that everyone?
Did imiss anyone?

Anyways... the Bowl show is Sunday at the Tonga Hut

so mp was sweet enough to suggest a collaboration to TommyBoy and i
We accepted and he ROSE ABOVE
studying our pieces
choosing favorite motifs
adding new ones

the genius of empee is that he
painted with shapes and composition
and gave us wonderful creations to
add 2-dimensionalvolume and form and mood
a true collaboration

it's an honor...
you should see his drunken baby dance
:)

This one the narrative was difficult...
the story was half-decided by the shapes and characters
but as the painting progressed
i was painting and talking in different voices
playing each character for fun

...
:)

So here's the title....
"Midnight Concoction"
cel-vinyl and acrylic on dimensional wood
mounted on velvet
with a stunning hand-carved frame by Mikel Parton
19.5 x 23"

Let's take a clock-wise tour around this delightful piece
and i dunno what it is,but velvet friggin POPS an image !

see?
I'm a Giver....
for you a Tiki Central EXCLUSIVE!
Here is the 2-d segment of the tour

The shield in this corner is amused
but still a little terrified
by the light and the enthusiasm of the pufferfish!

Pufferfish lamp is GOIN AWF!
i painted the glow on the actual velvet
wHICH WAS HARD!
and i totally did it wrong
wetting the velvet first..
so then empee advised to DRY BRUSH it on
which i did afterwards
so it's kinda amateurish
but take into consideration that i had to paint this at a 45 degree brush angle
and with a chunk of wood in the way
like fishing for keys down a gutter!
:)

Okay... Now check this OWT!
the bottle that overlaps the shield is DIMENSIONAL
it's about a 1/2 inch ABOVE the shield!
Anyways,i decided to carry a bit of the stained glass style
with it's faux dimensionality
and apply it to a 3-d surface
WHEEEEEEEEEEEE!
i imagine this guy sniffin the cork of the rum bottle!

As we journey lower We see the label of Cap'n fishPaw's Rum
and a happy lil ku mug awaiting his sip
on the ends of the bowl smiling skulls
suspended by ropes thru the eyeholes
rest on tiny blue bases...

Here's the middle of the Blue Bowl full of the lava colored concoction
I imagine him panting like a thirsty dog
where nobody filled the water dish!

on the bottom left, you can catch a hint of the dimensionality of the straw in front of the pineapple-diving the light
Also, take a closer look at the Ku in the middle...
i painted his body onto the inside of the bowl
and the effect of 3-D magic is enhanced as the patron walks past
a total Optical Illusion
On a Few different levels..
WOWz!

Alright.. Time to get real...
Share with the audience...
Here's a tour to show ya how the mind-boggling Dimensionality of this piece
is constructed...a peek behind the curtain...
you could never get this by seeing it up in the wall

Here's a level view from the bottom of the piece..
you can seethe areas raised above the surface of the velvet
the Bowl sticks out the farthest
the pineapple/Ku mug/Rum bottleare the basement level
below the bowl
and the shields are the cellar
below the basement
VERY close to the surface of the velvet
the pufferfish is raised a 1/2" maybe 3/4" above the surface of the velvet
like the bowl....

Here's a picture from the side
imagine trying to paint under this labrynth of dimensional surfaces
SOMEBODY Call the WAHmbulance!
i told empee NEXT collab to send the pieces
i'll send them back
he can then assemble it
Win WIn!

Here's another angle showing the complexity of this lil miracle!

Here's the pufferfish with the messy sides
here's the genius of empee
he cut most of em at a 45 degree angle INWARD
Perfect!
you can see my scumble marks trying to work a glow on velvet at impossible angles
a testament to this EPIC Challenge!

Here the viewer can see the main supports for the Bowl and some of the Hi's and Lows of the other shapes....

Here's the other side givin y'alls the
mind-numbing Angles of this Museum worthy mousetrap!

And here's the final INSIDE EDITION view
of the bowl and the pieces behind it

One really has to see this in person and to walk back and forth
and around it
to appreciate the True Collaborative masterpiece that THIS IS!

La Luz and the Tonga Hut
I'll be showing in Hollywood TWICE this weekend!
WHOOP!

Anyways..work tomorrow
gotta get some sleep
I hope to see and Hug many of you on Friday!

Hello LoriLovesTiki!
We have the same initials!
Glad you like the "Midnight Feast"
the Blackline for it is going into the Ohana:Luau on the Lake magazine
as a Coloring Page for the kids....After i scanned it,i just couldn't
resist coloring it! Let's hope the kids think the same! :)
And yes... i DO sell my work.....a WHOLE bunch!
But,being much more interested in the what painting lies around the corner,i have a very low-pressure approach to sales...
If a person loves a piece of art enough, they will email me with an inquiry....i then send them a price and we go from there..
Very easy and i can spend more time painting
instead of chasing sales and promotion...
Again...Thanks for visiting this thread.....There's a LOT of art and witty banter and even some keen observations in these 198 pages...
Enjoy!

Thanks Pal
!that Maori Bowl took awhile between colors being layered
drying time
then the bleachpen
let it set
wash it off
more drying
then more ink washes
drying time
and finally the sharpie and dry medium...
Real stoked it still retained that sloppy "immediate" feel.
a Coffee Table tome?
All i need is a publisher and an assistant
and your wish will be granted! :)

Tom threw me down a Lava Letch, one of his mugs from Frankie's Tiki Room, after i had berated him for slapping a 3-color bleed on these and hawking em like hotcakes...I wanted to show the boy how to give this design some PROPER attention, care, and detail..... Needless to say,it flew off the table at Viva las Vegas ,and right into a collector's grimy hands! :) Hopefully, this will motivate Toe to paint one up PROPER-LIKE! Cuz it would look sweeeeet! :)

Great use of the wooden leaf tray, just like it was made for a crocodile! I think the painted mug needs glow in the dark paint or blacklight paint.

See ya in a few days! :D

Nice to see a few paintings with a bigger color pallette than green and orange. :D

"LLT" - too funny (having the same initials) I hadn't noticed!

Both your paintings and your commentary make me smile. :) I love so much of your stuff. This is a fun thread.

TM

Gotta say it again. Your creations go far beyond being just tiki art. This is modern art of the highest caliber. Museum quality, actually.

B

So much good stuff that my head is spinning.

Sister Wends would be proud!

You produce a lot of work, but GROG think Eric October is kickin' your butt! Check out his latest Gallery post on page 6 of his Gallery thread. :)

Hello Dear Ohana!
So sorry for the time between postings...
Life and work and mojave oasis and other matters often consume time
like a bag of Lays Potato chips...

Let us attend to some replies and then some work posting...

Mike! SO Great to see you at MOasis!
Hoping Toe will throw down another one because Glow in the Dark paint would RULE that SCHOOL! Speaking of,i really DO think we'll be needing to do some of them Chairs....and NOW that i have gotten 100% confirmation from Thor that we'll be sharing a suite at Tiki Oasis,i think there may be a few folks who might want to take a collab piece home with them...
Miss you already,my dear talented friend!

Ernie....this isn't a competition...
i think tobunga's work is par excellence
AND his output is incredible...
Sometimes people have other genres to paint
and have to slice up their time to accomodate them all...
plus work takes up a lot of time...
so shaddup
and get to crackin on some new ceramics
:)

Quote from LLT...
"ATP-Who is Exeter? I see you have used him on MP's thread as well...

Kinny!!!
As a fan of 1950s Sci-Fi (you are, are you not?)
this is from the great & cheesy movie "This Island Earth"

"Exeter" was the head Alien from the planet Metaluna
who came to Earth to recruit (kidnap) the top Scientist's
to help save Metaluna from total annilation.

(You should know this!)

Watch it, now!
