Been playing with color combos to capture that indoor bar lighting,even if it is from a Bent perspective... I'm hoping they Glow Without a Black-light! If you scroll down,this new offering below follows that same color exploration... Hopefully,as soon a the studio is perfect for it, you can share some Tiki woodburns with us! :) Well.. Time for some ART! "the Fallen Comrade" acrylic gouache and cel-vinyl on wood 23 x 13.75" image: 11 x 20" Here it is WITHOUT the thrift store PERFECT frame and some details! This painting is about that one friend who happens to take a dive some night out on the town (or at Tiki Oasis...) We have ALL had a friend like that...this is a painting about THEM... our FALLEN COMRADES! :) Some Background... I went for a looser style still bringing in elements of the stained glass style but loosening it up making it more painterly than graphic... the colors were also a fun little recess brights next to neutrals next to darks..then shadowing it in with a raw umber and highlighting areas with some dark mustard and naples yellow,and then some washes of black ,but just in the areas that needed it...... Uh Oh.... the Fallen Comrade... i love lamp. Fish Float lamps a Background Table Closeup of the Background Table And here's one i finished up at Mojave Oasis a few weeks back.... such a great place to relax and hang with friends "the Village" tissue paper/ink stain and ink on Aquarelle watercolor paper 12 x 16" and some close-ups... Hut! Sun and Another Hut! Idol or Ancestor Carving a closeup to show the ground and some of the rough ink and tissue paper stain below the drawing... and one last treat...Early Saturday morn i wandered the park and did quick studies of some the Tikis adorning the poles around Mojave oasis...There were some new ones erected in the half circle vintage trailer area this year and they look GREAT! "Tikis at Mojave Oasis" tissue paper/ink stain and ink on Aquarelle watercolor paper 12 x 16" That's all i got for now... Have a Nice Evening! :)

There's a New gallery in bakersfield called the Sideshow gallery Toe,myself and a bunch of other demented painters are hanging there... if you're in that area,go check it out it's on Buck Owens Drive Which is WAY cool in itself! El-Freakin-Paso! :) Soooo Here's a Brand NEW painting i shuffled off to them last Saturday "THE BATTLE OF NIGHT AND DAY" cel-vinyl and acrylic on wood 21x20" with a beautifully craftted Mikel Parton (empee) frame! the image alone This was part of my kid's book that i never wrote so i figured a painting would lock it into my memory banks when that time arrives.... Here's the Sun and moon struggling over the Night Sky.... This Tiki is pretty much just photobombing the picture He just popped up and wouldn't move,so here he is... This piece was real fun and loose Big Swathes of color before the images were fleshed out... Wheeee! Here's the hut in a warm twilight sunset sunrise glow A Volcano and some Palms watchiong lazily over this daily struggle.... Here's the EXACT point where Night meets Day... Like i said before..it was a BLAST playing so ROUGH with the background colors and shapes! Some foliage and ground That's all i got NEW this week Tiki-wise... Tho....if you would be so kind allow me this small pitch I will be having a SOLO show Friday June 7th "Sacred and Profane" at the the Egan gallery (that's 2 "the"s) 223/225 Santa Fe at the Magowski Arts Colony Downtown Fullerton CA 6 to 10 pm This will have SOME Tiki work, but a LOT of what i was painting the 15-some years BEFORE tackling Tiki with Full Force... Here's a Brand New painting for the show "the Battle of the Fish" Not Tiki more Han Dynasty stone-carvings,if you ask me.... Wow Wow Wow! acrylic gouache and cel-vinyl on wood (?) Interresting medium...looks so moody and smooth, I always had problems with gouache myself. 23 x 13.75" image: 11 x 20" nice size too.... Acrylic gouache isn't as "gritty" as regular gouache,BUT it's cool because when it's dry-it's dry.. i used to have a problem doing figures with regular gouache because the paint on the ground would come up when wet....NOT ANYMORE! and ,like acrylic matte paint and cel-vinyl,it drys flat-perfect for photographing!"the Fallen Comrade" was a hit at the Sacred and Profane" show....Sold Seven pieces and ALMOST sold that one,but now i got it for Tiki Oasis to share with the hardcore Tiki Folks! :) i wish you'd fly down and stay for a week...We could have at least 3 Artjams! Speaking of Artjams... here's two we've had recently.. the first with just Toe,Doug,and meself i think we were watching some MXC or "Run Ronnie Run!" this is Toe's typical position during the artjams how we creates those Masterworks in such a short time is beyond me... This is a "Horne's eye view" as we pull out the table for Doug (i have a special lamp for him i've hooked on one of the masks in the back room and he just powers thru.stopping only when boobies flash across the screen of whatever film we're viewing for the evening... and that's me in back in my little corner painting drawing watching films at least 40 or so hours a week I'd like to embalmed and placed in a museum in a diorama built to resemble the studio backroom... but it's only a wish.... a sweet wish..... Anyways....her's the shot! and here's last week's hi-jinx with Doug,Toe,matt lebelle (co-worker,friend,and ex-rad-famous snowboarder) and.... the illustrious Bamboo Ben! He stopped by to drop off some frames and stayed thru the classic 70's Drive-In movies "Cindy and Donna" and "the Stepmother" it was so great to hang for a few hours with the boys (as we are all busy) Ben,as you know,finished up the Tiki Iniki across the pacific and created a Hut for the Surfite display at the Kustom Kulture 2o year show Toe had two pieces in there too Doug should've been in that show but i think he was home playing with his cats ... "the Windy Day" pyrography and cel-vinyl tinting on wood 12 x 12" an old wooden and Bamboo Outhouse.... A gusty wind blows open the door and the rest need not be explained... i put a little crescent moon on the outhouse door.... Hey! Shut that Door! Hey! Here's a side view of the Outhouse with a Ku motif and boid peeping about... painting wind is hard enough try capturing that with a woodburn and tinting! pain in the butt and posessed my thoughts for a few days but it yielded good fruit in the end! Closer! WHOOOOOOSH! Hey! Shut that Dang-Blasted Door! Well... in case you haven't heard.. Tiki Farm will be releasing PiNGo at Tiki Oasis this year! it will also be available online for those of you who can;t make it... here is the original that inspired it... Seeing as the front of the mug was decided,here are some sketchbook studies trying to decide what would go on the back end of this beauty! From there ,a sensible ,more professional rendering was required Way too much detail for a mere mortal sculptor to undertake! So it was simplified,retaining the character and spirit of the original... which evolved into THIS! here's some NEVER BEFORE SEEN PHOTOS of the original clay sculpt that TikiFarm produced... mmmm! looks so Chocolaty! i just wanna take a BITE! FIRST glaze sample... and the FINAL RESULT! capturing some of the uneven speckled textures of foliage and aged wood i think this will be a fun mug to have a few with and just turn it around slowly absorbed in the lush tropical jungle for a spell... Oh! here's a funny story.. the first name that came to mind was PNG-WHIZ! (like Papua New Guinea with Gee-Whiz thrown in) but then the song There was a farmer who had a Dog and ..... PiNGo was his name-o sprang to mind! (the PNG in PiNGo still satisfying that pun) So we went with it' and then Holden wrote to inform me that "Pingo" in Spanish means "pervert" or something close to that... after some discussion it was agreed to keep that name and contribute a funny name in two languages! Alrightio! Now onto some new paintings with them Bamboo Ben frames! this one was semi-inspired by this... "the Chief's Bowl" "the Volcano Bowl" 14 x 20.25" acrylic and cel-vinyl on wood with a glorious Bamboo Ben frame! Noe real story for this one... mostly a lighting and color study i do feel that thru these two subjects that a story DID develop the surprise of the shields on the wall as the volcano bowl lights the bar for a second.... Sluuuuuuuurp. Ah! the plight of the Stingy and the mooch... Here's a favorite part of this piece i wanted to put a PNG mask on the wall BUT i also wanted to paint some open shark jaws... Detente! this last piece WHICH WILL ALSO BE AVAILABLE AT TIKI OASIS this YEAR! is inspired by this drawing... "Composition with Skull Bowl" ink,Copic marker,pastel pencil on tissue paper-stained Aquarelle watercolor paper 10.5 x 14" it seemed too clutterd for a painting so i sparsed it up and thru the mysterious blues evoked a suspicious air of dread at the arrival of the Skull Bowl! "the Skull Bowl" 17 x 19.5" acrylic and cel-vinyl on wood with a Chunky bamboo Ben frame! Love the HEAVY top and bottom of this frame adds to the Heeeeavy atmosphere of this lil gem! here's just the painting These were all done right on the wood no gesso that way it soaked and soaked in the paint as each layer was applied becoming one... it's nice because up close the grains show thru in areas ever so lightly it's nice... Here's the skull bowl Dave Deuce Estala brought up that it reminded him of Squid's Squll Bowl.... Y'know? ithat bowl was awesome and must've seeped in a little tho my humble scribblings could never match the beauty of that sculpture.... Just talked to Dave last week. He's doing some collaborations with gecko that are true works of art deserving space in museums ... Here's a dazed maori.. Sounds like the name of a drink "the Dazed Maori" i like it.. this fellow is in what we commonly refer to as... THE ZONE and this little nervous TikiBob meets PNG shield fellow His friendly hesitant smile is a welcome sight while wading thru the Blue... Well Well.... That was a LOT of typing and a LOT of uploading but i can sleep easily tonight knowing i have caught up and am able to provide you with sneak peeks of the newest freshest paintings... goodnight Dear ohana! I was really trying to push the addition of a bird for this mug,and Holden felt the same...we agreed that the bird and the shield motif were a totally Ruzicsignature so we went with it... And mahalo! Next piece is my half of a collaboration with the esteemed artist and ceramacist Mikel Parton (MP) (or Empee) A fine fellow and great Buddy! lookin so forward to a DRUNKEN BABY DANCE at Oasis,Empee! Anyways,Empee sent me and Toe some shields one of the smaller ones i painted up and sent back so he could mount it on velvet AND create a Beautiful diamond-shaped frame for it FOR OASIS! "Crocodile Shield" Next piece is a combination of two previous paintings more of a color study,but nonetheless enjoyable to behold.. "Night Drums" cel-vinyl and acrylic on wood with a Bamboo ben frame! 22 x 21.5" some details fer ya! Next piece is an elaboration of two previous pieces thrown into an entirely new composition "Evening Feast" cel-vinyl and acrylic on wood with a Bamboo Ben frame! 23 x 27" and some details and a sly commentary on Collecting/Hoarding with a Cannibal King accumulating WAY too many bonesthat ebven his expanding belly could handle! "the Hoarder" cel-vinyl and acrylic on wood with a Bamboo Ben frame! 21.5 x 20.5" and .....some details! and here's a HUGE ONE! 49" long! one of a few shields Empee sent us to paint up for Oasis this year.. I've been prodding Toe to do a Comedy/Tragedy Mask pair so hopefully i can bicker him into it cuz i KNOW it'll be GOOD! I've got a Horizontal boat/fishing thing planned in the meantime,i needed to get at least one HUGE Cannibal king headdress piece done for Oasis... So............ I have SO MUCH...these need to be distributed throughout the Tiki World so I've priced them for every economic stratus and i'll even barter with ya if ya spent all yer shillings on Booze and BigToe prints Because this is where the Ohana congregate only ONCE a year!
