Kinny!!!
As a fan of 1950s Sci-Fi (you are, are you not?)
this is from the great & cheesy movie "This Island Earth"

"Exeter" was the head Alien from the planet Metaluna
who came to Earth to recruit (kidnap) the top Scientist's
to help save Metaluna from total annilation.

(You should know this!)

Watch it, now!

Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hR7e3StbXoU

One of the best, and cheesiest '50s Sci-Fi B-Movies ever! Maybe only second to "Invasion of the Saucer Men."

A Thousand Pardons.....
it appears I posted in GEEK CENTRAL by mistake!
:)

It's okay LLT, I really dig old 40's/50's movies and I didn't recognize it either and have also been wondering what it was from.

"The First Sip' looks like it would glow under a black light, I am not sure but it may possibly be the brightest picture I have seen you do. Dig the wood burning I like to do that myself once in a while. :)

hello Ohana!

Got a few new ones to share with ya
Gimme just a minute...

Looking forward to seeing YOU and all those fellow Friends and Arteests who are long overdue some Hugs! :)

Meh...
the monster thing used to fascinate me as a kid
When i would stumble upon it in the Monster Movie rags of the 70's
but the rest of the movie looks like every other from that era
Black and White films
saturated with a looming
Atomic Destruction/Utopia
Commies and Bombs disguised as other-Worldly visitors
over it...

Would rather watch all the old episodes of kikaida,Thank you very much!
:)

Vincent Price "the Last Man on Earth" is my fave from that Black and White Sci-Fi category.

Been playing with color combos to capture that indoor bar lighting, even if it is from a Bent perspective...
I'm hoping they Glow Without a Black-light!
If you scroll down, this new offering below follows that same color exploration...
Hopefully,as soon a the studio is perfect for it,
you can share some Tiki woodburns with us! :)

Well.. Time for some ART!

"the Fallen Comrade"
acrylic gouache and cel-vinyl on wood
23 x 13.75"
image: 11 x 20"

Here it is WITHOUT the thrift store PERFECT frame

and some details!
This painting is about that one friend who happens to take a dive some night out on the town (or at Tiki Oasis...) We have ALL had a friend like that...this is a painting about THEM...
our FALLEN COMRADES!
:)

Some Background...

I went for a looser style
still bringing in elements of the stained glass style
but loosening it up
making it more painterly than graphic...
the colors were also a fun little recess
brights next to neutrals next to darks..then shadowing it in with a raw umber and highlighting areas with some dark mustard and naples yellow, and then some washes of black ,but just in the areas that needed it......

Uh Oh....

the Fallen Comrade...

i love lamp.

Fish Float lamps

a Background Table

Closeup of the Background Table

And here's one i finished up at Mojave Oasis
a few weeks back....
such a great place to relax and hang with friends

"the Village"
tissue paper/ink stain and ink on Aquarelle watercolor paper
12 x 16"

and some close-ups...
Hut!

Sun and Another Hut!

Idol or Ancestor Carving

a closeup to show the ground
and some of the rough ink and tissue paper stain
below the drawing...

and one last treat...Early Saturday morn i wandered the park and did
quick studies of some the Tikis adorning the poles around Mojave oasis...There were some new ones erected in the half circle vintage trailer area this year and they look GREAT!

"Tikis at Mojave Oasis"
tissue paper/ink stain and ink on Aquarelle watercolor paper
12 x 16"

That's all i got for now...
Have a Nice Evening!
:)

The First Sip
How did I miss that???
It made me thirsty, so I made a drink...

Glad this thread and these lil paintings
inspired a nice relaxing reprise from the ordinary...
Who gets to take the first sip?
that tense moment until SOMEBODY steps in
and Sluuuuurp!

Well....Gettin ready for a solo show in June
so i've been the lil busybee
doing that
and handling a rigorous day gig...

There's a New gallery in bakersfield
called the Sideshow gallery
Toe,myself and a bunch of other demented painters
are hanging there...
if you're in that area,go check it out
it's on Buck Owens Drive
Which is WAY cool in itself!
El-Freakin-Paso!
:)

Soooo
Here's a Brand NEW painting i shuffled off to them last Saturday

"THE BATTLE OF NIGHT AND DAY"
cel-vinyl and acrylic on wood
21x20"
with a beautifully craftted Mikel Parton (empee) frame!

the image alone

This was part of my kid's book
that i never wrote
so i figured a painting
would lock it into my memory banks
when that time arrives....

Here's the Sun and moon struggling over the Night Sky....

This Tiki is pretty much just photobombing the picture
He just popped up and wouldn't move,so here he is...

This piece was real fun and loose
Big Swathes of color before the images were fleshed out...
Wheeee!

Here's the hut in a warm twilight sunset sunrise glow

A Volcano and some Palms watchiong lazily over this daily struggle....

Here's the EXACT point where Night meets Day...
Like i said before..it was a BLAST playing so ROUGH with the background colors and shapes!

Some foliage and ground

That's all i got NEW this week Tiki-wise...
Tho....if you would be so kind
allow me this small pitch

I will be having a SOLO show
Friday June 7th
"Sacred and Profane"
at the the Egan gallery
(that's 2 "the"s)
223/225 Santa Fe at the Magowski Arts Colony
Downtown Fullerton CA
6 to 10 pm

This will have SOME Tiki work,
but a LOT of what i was painting the 15-some years
BEFORE tackling Tiki with Full Force...

Here's a Brand New painting for the show

"the Battle of the Fish"

Not Tiki
more Han Dynasty stone-carvings,if you ask me....
Again..not Tiki
but still shows my love of ALL myths and folklore and Art...

Here's a Flyer to the upcoming show
if you aren't at ink and Iron
C'mon Down and say "Hello!"
Thank yuo for the indulgence....
:)

The color is a popping & so is your latest works, Kinny!

love the tikis at the mojave
really cool

Howdy Folks!
Been SUPER BUSY with the Sacred and Profane exhibition

it was fun to grab a 20-year slice of pieces
paint a bunch of new ones
then assemble them into a narrative...

Will be having a Closing Reception on June 22nd from 7pm to 11pm
Tiki Highway is during the day at Don's
I'll be there for a spell
Been working on a Secret Project with a dozen other artists
involving DeadHead Rum...but that's all i can say for now...
So go there during the day
and C'mon down to Fullerton in the Evenin for EVEn more Culture!

If i can handle the marathon
So can YOU!
:)

Here's a flier with all the info
(except about the Closing Reception)
June 22nd 7-11pm

and here i am the Opening Night
in front of an UNauthorized poster plastered out front
(i always gave BigToe and Horne grief for their banners
chiding them about being Megalomaniac Shysters and so on...
Well....not anymore)
i would like to thank Bax Baxter, the owner of the Egan gallery
for making me into a hypocrite!

If you'd like to see all 52 paintings and 75 drawings
MY WEBSITE IS UP
(tho it needs a lot of work)

and i started uploading some Tiki work on their as well
it will be an ongoing process,so check in there
every so often....

http://www.kenruzic.com

Now for some brief conversations
and then i have a bunch of drawins to share!

I gotta say I'm still tryig to get over how FREAKIN' AMAZING the piece called "the Fallen Comrade" is! Wow Wow Wow!
acrylic gouache and cel-vinyl on wood (?) Interresting medium...looks so moody and smooth, I always had problems with gouache myself.
23 x 13.75"
image: 11 x 20" nice size too.... U TOTALLY RAWK!!!

I sure am glad you have returned. We've been missing you every day. I'll have to go check out your web site so I can have a Kinny rush. I love the new fish painting. Eric October has a wonderful book, when will you have an equally wonderful book? Hugs, Wendy

Hello Brad! Thanks for all the Cooper songs and pacific rim chitchat!
Great Pieces are in store,my friend! Acrylic gouache isn't as "gritty" as regular gouache,BUT it's cool because when it's dry-it's dry.. i used to have a problem doing figures with regular gouache because the paint on the ground would come up when wet....NOT ANYMORE! and ,like acrylic matte paint and cel-vinyl,it drys flat-perfect for photographing!"the Fallen Comrade" was a hit at the Sacred and Profane" show....Sold Seven pieces and ALMOST sold that one,but now i got it for Tiki Oasis to share with the hardcore Tiki Folks! :)

i wish you'd fly down and stay for a week...We could have at least 3 Artjams!

Speaking of Artjams...
here's two we've had recently..
the first with just Toe,Doug, and meself
i think we were watching some MXC or "Run Ronnie Run!"
this is Toe's typical position during the artjams
how we creates those Masterworks in such a short time is beyond me...
This is a "Horne's eye view" as we pull out the table for Doug
(i have a special lamp for him i've hooked on one of the masks in the back room
and he just powers thru.stopping only when boobies flash across the screen of whatever film we're viewing for the evening...
and that's me in back
in my little corner
painting drawing watching films
at least 40 or so hours a week
I'd like to embalmed and placed in a museum
in a diorama built to resemble the studio backroom...
but it's only a wish....
a sweet wish.....
Anyways....her's the shot!

and here's last week's hi-jinx
with Doug,Toe,matt lebelle (co-worker,friend,and ex-rad-famous snowboarder)
and.... the illustrious Bamboo Ben!
He stopped by to drop off some frames
and stayed thru the classic 70's Drive-In movies
"Cindy and Donna"
and "the Stepmother"
it was so great to hang for a few hours with the boys
(as we are all busy)
Ben,as you know, finished up the Tiki Iniki across the pacific
and created a Hut for the Surfite display at the Kustom Kulture 2o year show
Toe had two pieces in there too
Doug should've been in that show
but i think he was home playing with his cats
...

The show was quite a thrill
the crowd loved the variety
and scale
and clumsy Epic approach to trying to consolidate the themes
of the past 20 years...
hope to see you at Oasis!

Anyways the California Screamin show at Don's
had a special art show within the art show
sponsored by Deadhead Rum
BigToe,Doug Dorr,Myself,and a host of others
were tasked with transforming one of their bottles,,
Here is my submission

"the Evil Eye"
Acrylic,Cel-vinyl,and puffpaint
on a Deadhead Run bottle

here is a roundabout view for you to enjoy....

and..Tiki Oasis has an Art show
and so wanting to tie-in
the Americana theme
but not wanting to leave
this storybookish polynesian fantasyland
that permeates the work

i have chosen the All Familiar theme of the outhouse!
Hearkening back to the novelty toys of my youth....
ESPECIALLY THIS ONE!

You'd open the door and he'd turn around and "pee" water at you
out of a little peeper!

Good Times....

"the Windy Day"
pyrography and cel-vinyl tinting on wood
12 x 12"

an old wooden and Bamboo Outhouse....
A gusty wind blows open the door and the rest need not be explained...

i put a little crescent moon on the outhouse door....

Hey! Shut that Door!

Hey!

Here's a side view of the Outhouse
with a Ku motif and boid peeping about...

painting wind is hard enough
try capturing that with a woodburn and tinting!
pain in the butt
and posessed my thoughts for a few days
but it yielded good fruit in the end!

Closer! WHOOOOOOSH!

Hey! Shut that Dang-Blasted Door!

Well... in case you haven't heard..
Tiki Farm will be releasing PiNGo
at Tiki Oasis this year!
it will also be available online for those of you
who can;t make it...

here is the original that inspired it...

Seeing as the front of the mug was decided, here are some sketchbook studies trying to decide what would go on the back end of this beauty!

From there ,a sensible ,more professional rendering was required

Way too much detail for a mere mortal sculptor to undertake!
So it was simplified, retaining the character and spirit of the original...

which evolved into THIS!

here's some NEVER BEFORE SEEN PHOTOS of the original clay sculpt
that TikiFarm produced...

mmmm! looks so Chocolaty!
i just wanna take a BITE!

FIRST glaze sample...

and the FINAL RESULT!
capturing some of the uneven speckled textures of foliage and aged wood
i think this will be a fun mug to have a few with
and just turn it around slowly
absorbed in the lush tropical jungle
for a spell...

Oh! here's a funny story..
the first name that came to mind was PNG-WHIZ!
(like Papua New Guinea with Gee-Whiz thrown in)

but then the song
There was a farmer who had a Dog
and .....
PiNGo was his name-o
sprang to mind!
(the PNG in PiNGo still satisfying that pun)
So we went with it'
and then Holden wrote
to inform me that "Pingo" in Spanish
means "pervert" or something close to that...
after some discussion it was agreed to keep that name
and contribute a funny name in two languages!

Alrightio!
Now onto some new paintings with them Bamboo Ben frames!
this one was semi-inspired by this...

"the Chief's Bowl"

"the Volcano Bowl"
14 x 20.25"
acrylic and cel-vinyl on wood
with a glorious Bamboo Ben frame!

Noe real story for this one...
mostly a lighting and color study
i do feel that thru these two subjects
that a story DID develop
the surprise of the shields on the wall
as the volcano bowl lights the bar for a second....

Here it is without a frame

and some close-ups...

and here's another drawing that inspired the next painting
"the Withholder"
Ink on Aquarelle watercolor paper
10.25 x 14"
private collection

and here's a painting
a little bit different
as i add and delete things
(i hate drawing the same thing twice)

"the Withholder"
21.25 x 21"
acrylic and cel-vinyl on wood
with an Awe-Inspiring bamboo Ben frame!

just the painting...

a warmer palette
in honor of my hot studio

Gimme a sip of your tasty Alcoholic beverage please!

Sluuuuuuuurp.

Ah! the plight of the Stingy and the mooch...

Here's a favorite part of this piece
i wanted to put a PNG mask on the wall
BUT i also wanted to paint some open shark jaws...
Detente!

this last piece
WHICH WILL ALSO BE AVAILABLE AT TIKI OASIS
this YEAR! is inspired by this drawing...

"Composition with Skull Bowl"
ink,Copic marker, pastel pencil on tissue paper-stained Aquarelle watercolor paper
10.5 x 14"

it seemed too clutterd for a painting
so i sparsed it up
and thru the mysterious blues
evoked a suspicious air of dread
at the arrival of the Skull Bowl!

"the Skull Bowl"
17 x 19.5"
acrylic and cel-vinyl on wood
with a Chunky bamboo Ben frame!

Love the HEAVY top and bottom of this frame
adds to the Heeeeavy atmosphere of this lil gem!

here's just the painting

These were all done right on the wood
no gesso
that way it soaked and soaked in the paint
as each layer was applied
becoming one...
it's nice because up close the grains show thru in areas
ever so lightly
it's nice...

Here's the skull bowl
Dave Deuce Estala brought up that it reminded him of Squid's Squll Bowl....
Y'know? ithat bowl was awesome and must've seeped in a little
tho my humble scribblings could never match the beauty of that sculpture....
Just talked to Dave last week.
He's doing some collaborations with gecko
that are true works of art
deserving space in museums ...

Here's a dazed maori..
Sounds like the name of a drink
"the Dazed Maori"
i like it..

this fellow is in
what we commonly refer to as...
THE ZONE

and this little nervous
TikiBob meets PNG shield fellow
His friendly hesitant smile
is a welcome sight
while wading thru the Blue...

Well Well....
That was a LOT of typing and a LOT of uploading
but i can sleep easily tonight
knowing i have caught up
and am able to provide you
with sneak peeks of the newest freshest paintings...
goodnight Dear ohana!

And a BIG BIG Mahalo for over 600,000 views
a collection of close-to 3000 comments
and providing me with 200 pages to share this
journey of art
with my family here on TC

Hope to see y'alls at Tiki Oasis this year!
:)

Hey Kinny, I think the new mug is a winner!
also I quite enjoy "the Volcano Bowl" it would look real nice in the lounge

I can't help but notice a little more whimsy in the new pieces too, Is Doug rubbing off on you?
keep up the great work.

[ Edited by: Atomic Tiki Punk 2013-07-24 10:31 ]

As I was scrolling down looking at all the different ideas for the back of the mug I was thinking "wow, I hope the bird is the winner" and it was. The mug came out great.
All the "bowl" pieces look awesome.
The BOO frames are sweet too.
See you at Oasis.

Jon

And Deadhead should let you paint all their bottles...

little lost tiki, it's always enjoyable going through this thread. Thanks for sharing -- it's great stuff!

Kinny this was so worth waiting for, this was a book all on its own and each page so good that it was hard to leave for the next. The work that goes into posting is an act of love for all of us who wait. Thank you for this gift. I appreciate seeing all that you do. The show, the mug the paintings all over the top terrific, just like you! Hugs at Oasis, Wendy

Just spent a half hour on page 200 little lost tiki, fantastic art that is constantly improving. Look forward to seeing your work at Tiki Oasis.

Damn LLT, I ain't got time to look through all that art! Well, at least not right now  Love the PiNGo though.

Ditto what Mike said... how on god's green ever lovin' earth do you paint so fast??? You ain't human.

And the Pingo... I am torn... I love it, but again with the creepy eye bird! Something is wrong with me I am starting to like the creepy eye bird!

I gotta ask... do you order that cel vinyl paint by the crate?
Is cartoon color the cheapest place to get that stuff? http://www.cartooncolour.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=1
Or do you have your own dealer by this time?

It was just so amazingly cool to see the sketches for the mug as they evolved and then the actual mug! Loved seeing some of the process.

Keep up the fantastic work!!! :)

Hello Ohana!
Well it's midnight
and a lil fuzzy
after kicking out about 15 pieces for tiki Oasis
Always like to give the kiddles Brand New Work
i will be sharing a few of the stronger ones today
and the others throughout the week
leading up to the event..

Toe brought me some chocolate velvet cupcakes
and some Whalers's Dark rum for my beeday Artjam on Thursday
Doug didn't show up cuz he was tired
but Andrew McClain, that guy you see with the big Moai mask at Caliente and such?
Yeah..him...he showed up to enjoy the evening's festivities..
To make a long story short
i drank a 5-hour energy too late this evening
so i spent the past few hours sipping Whaler's
and chasing it with Reed's Extra Ginger Brew
for a Dark and Stormy mood
that will hopefully lull me into sleep
for work tomorrow!
But first...
i must attend to this thread...

Hey Kinny, I think the new mug is a winner!
also I quite enjoy "the Volcano Bowl" it would look real nice in the lounge

I can't help but notice a little more whimsy in the new pieces too, Is Doug rubbing off on you?
keep up the great work.

Thanks Lancey!
Eagerly awaiting feeling that round birdhead with me thumbs!
You like "the Volcano Bowl"? Not so fast...scroll down-there's a few surprises below!

Thought of you this weekend as i painted and watched "the Abominable Dr. Phibes" ,"Dr. Phibes Rises","the Bat","Last Man on Earth",and"the Bat" (with Agnes Moorhead!!!)
So it was a Vincent Price filled Art Blur this weekend as Vincent soothed the long hours of toil.....

the whimsy was always there....look back and you will see it,even behind the darker pieces...YOU just finally noticed...newbie! :)

:)

Hey Jon! I was really trying to push the addition of a bird for this mug,and Holden felt the same...we agreed that the bird and the shield motif were a totally Ruzicsignature
so we went with it... And mahalo! Glad you like the newly born babies popping out of the studio! Ben's frames really help finish them and give them that Tiki Bar interior vibe...
See you soon!

hey tigertail..
dunno where the energy comes from..
last week i had HARDCORE Mon thru Thursday working up to the MAGIC tradeshow the DAY AFTER Oasis/saw Flaming Lips on Wednesday,AND rode the Tilt-a-Whirl TWICE!
Drank a LOT of cinnamon whiskey and coffee at Thursday night's Artjam-painted til late
then got up at 8 on Friday to switch out some work at the Sideshow gallery in riverside
then got a Birthday massage, and an Art opening Friday night
and then it was a 15 painting marathon
and now it's Monday 12:35
so....to answer your question....
somebody's gotta do it....
:)

i see that Egyptians have filled your art world for a spell...
it's always wonderful to peek outside Polynesia and see the whole
quiver of mankind's Art legacy..
so inspiring....

as for the Bird on the PiNGo mug..
Not to be accused of Hucksterism
but get one
'and you will LOVE to run your thumb along his head
and i BET he'll purr
(if you have enough drinks)
and you'll become close friends....
:)

and to answer your question....
I'm not sure...
i've never been a guy to hunt bargains
i rely on them crossing my path

i just go to the Art Supply Warehouse
and load up
i NEVER look at prices when it comes to art supplies
if it works and is cheap-good
if not-ah well..

hey LLT!

You wouldn't believe hoe difficult it was to withhold these sketches from y'alls..
but one has to wait until the final production is Revealed
so it was a long-awaited pleasure to share some of the process with y'alls
Most folks just see the mug and the sketch and that's it..
A LOT more goes into these
but the main ingredient is Love!

And again! Big HUgs and Big Mahalos to all of you who visit and who read my rantings and enjoy the art
and especially those of you
who take the time and say "Hello!"
If any of you are at Tiki Oasis this year
Come hunt me down
i'll be vending at the Thor suite with Thor (duh!) and Crazy Al!
I'll have FREE PUPPIES and HUGS for ALL!
:)

Let's get to some ART now
m'kay!

First ArtPiece is for the Cannibal Art Swap
Here on Tiki Central!
http://www.tikicentral.com/viewtopic.php?mode=viewtopic&topic=45414&forum=18&start=0
it's an embellished thrift store find
maybe it was Tongan originally
didn't;t get a pre-shot of it
just threw it on the pile of things to paint up
this weekend..
so here it is
(with a Louis Prima song title as the initial inspiration)

"Closer to the Bone"
cel-vinyl and acrylic over wooden thrift store low-relief carving
16 x 7"

Here are some close-ups so you can get a feeling of the relief carving
which provided some challenges and an opportunity to reveal the original
carver's intent under the paint...

and a close-up of his face
with a happy lil smile!

Next piece is my half of a collaboration with the
esteemed artist and ceramacist Mikel Parton (MP) (or Empee)
A fine fellow and great Buddy!
lookin so forward to a DRUNKEN BABY DANCE at Oasis,Empee!
Anyways,Empee sent me and Toe some shields
one of the smaller ones i painted up and sent back
so he could mount it on velvet
AND create a Beautiful diamond-shaped frame for it
FOR OASIS!

"Crocodile Shield"

Next piece is a combination of two previous paintings
more of a color study, but nonetheless enjoyable to behold..

"Night Drums"
cel-vinyl and acrylic on wood
with a Bamboo ben frame!
22 x 21.5"

some details fer ya!

Next piece is an elaboration of two previous pieces
thrown into an entirely new composition

"Evening Feast"
cel-vinyl and acrylic on wood
with a Bamboo Ben frame!
23 x 27"

and some details

and a sly commentary on Collecting/Hoarding with a Cannibal King
accumulating WAY too many bonesthat ebven his expanding belly
could handle!

"the Hoarder"
cel-vinyl and acrylic on wood
with a Bamboo Ben frame!
21.5 x 20.5"

and .....some details!

and here's a HUGE ONE!
49" long!
one of a few shields Empee sent us to paint up for Oasis this year..
I've been prodding Toe to do a Comedy/Tragedy Mask pair
so hopefully i can bicker him into it
cuz i KNOW it'll be GOOD!

I've got a Horizontal boat/fishing thing planned
in the meantime,i needed to get at least one HUGE Cannibal king headdress piece done for Oasis...
So............

"the Stowaway"
cel-vinyl and acrylic on wooden shield from MP
49 x 7 "

DETAILS!

and some ULTRA CLOSE-UPS!!!!

and some SUPER SUPER CLOSE-UPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the Stowaway!!!!!!

That's it Kids
i am spent
This Rum is goooood...
:)

Beddy Bye now...
G'night Dear Ohana!
See y'alls in a week or so.....
:)

Thanx bruddah
Got it hung up in The Honu Hideaway

Jon

We love our little lost tiki painting. Beautiful.

When we got home from Tiki Oasis 13 it stayed in the Buzzy Bedroom for awhile.

Now it is hung in the family room.

Thank you Kinny! Wendy

LLT -

Your artwork is to die for! I love the little 4x4's that you made up for the $ strapped! That way everyone at Oasis was able to get some LLT love!

wish I was there.... perhaps next year!

This just in...

Tiki Farm Website

“Pingo”!

Pingo was designed for us by one of the most animated and well known artists in the Tiki scene… our bottle blonde whacky buddy Ken (aka “Little Lost Tiki”)   Ruzic

Awesome bruddah...
