Aloha Kirby, First welcome to TC and the "Creating" Forum. We love seeing newcomers who want to join in and socialize a bit. Your paintings are very cool. The shrunken head with the jungly eyes behind is my favorite. I know nothing about photography, but why not take them outside in the sunlight and turn off the flash. My tikis always look better that way, especially in late afternoon light. Stick around! A-A |

If you have Photoshop (or any editing tool that allows perspective tweaks), simply shoot your digital photo a little off-center, so the flash doesn't reflect straight into the image. Then in Photoshop, use the perspective tool to bring it back to a rectangular shape. If possible, have someone hold up a dark sheet next to you to block out any reflections of the room around you. I usually opt for no flash at all and shoot from a camera steadied on a tripod or other object. Tiki-bot [ Edited by: Tiki-bot on 2005-05-12 12:46 ] |

I shoot paintings before they are framed outside but not in the direct sunlight that tends to wash them out. Avoid the flash if you can it leaves hotspots and washes out the colors. |

Kirby! I think the outside approach works best too...unless you have a couple good lights..angled to eliminate reflection and shadow. I don't tackle any serious documentation of my own work anymore myself but used to! If I am showing a publisher in progress work, I try to shoot my pics of work in the semi shade or the later or earlier part of the day. Noon and mid day is harsh light and hard to dodge shadows. Photoshop do's allow a few adjustments too..you can push color saturation and screw with things that make it look closer to the original. When you shoot the art in the morning or afternoon..though it's less harsh..the light is warmer and your work will appear a bit warmer in tone..so you may choose to adjust in the photoshop. The ultimate is high end studio lighting if you want the greatest chance of capturing art short of scanning. But this is tough..ya, you need light from left and right and need good color corrected sources. So..I recommend good ol' fashoned sun but not too intense. You can bounce light using a white cardboard reflector or something if you shoot in the semi shade..it can "fill" an even cast of light. EXPERIMENT! FUN ART though!!!!

Kirby~~ The guys who shoot my work ar in Honolulu. Hawaii. I don't really know what they charge..my publishers actually tak care of those expenses so I can't quote prices. They are a compny in Honolulu called Chromaco. They are WONDRRFUL..extremely knowledgeable and just plain nice people. They do a process of studio lighting and a camera that is very high detail...which is almost like a scanner. If you want your work shot for repro's there is no better source I garantee. If you call them..ask for Todd or Larry..tell em I sent ya..I am sure they will give you a great deal on top notch work!
