BEFORE I GET TO POSTING THE ACTUAL CANVAS IN PROGRESS... Monumental Street Art! great street signage! and look! Damn fence! i want one! Tanks for the memories! thus concludes the tourist photoslide show.... well...the Squid invasion canvas has started..
the KRAKEN! actually a giant Humboldt "Red Devil" Squid! Okay! now that you're familiar with the initial inspirational elements to the CANVAS!!!!! First off, this was to be based on those polynesian Storyboards that are carved from wood...A lot of them are very simple and basic So first thing is i went to the Art Supply warehouse (ARTISTS NOTE:None of these have been adjusted for color after pencilling in a part of it,i began to brush in with Raw umber added an extra squid here.. big eye! Here's a good close-up to show the washes i build up.. SECOND DAY! trying to get the shafts of light to look carved Squizzes! added suckers big eye under the tapa lip... the ceremony on the boat.... worked out the figural simplification a lil bit better! Thanks for visiting! [ Edited by: little lost tiki 2009-09-08 18:57 ] |

In person you can really see Ken's beautiful use of color wash to create the wood look. Detail is delightful and as expected from LLT! Can't wait to see it finished. Thanks for the fun time at THE RUZIC studio, Kinny! Lil Blue says you should take a shower and go to bed! We never did get around to talking about framing.

Almost forgetting for the moment all thoughts of Moby Dick, we now gazed at the most wondrous phenomenon which the secret seas have hitherto revealed to mankind. A vast pulpy mass, furlongs in length and breadth, of a glancing cream-color, lay floating on the water, innumerable long arms radiating from its centre, and curling and twisting like a nest of anacondas, as if blindly to catch at any hapless object within reach. No perceptible face or front did it have; no conceivable token of either sensation or instinct; but undulated there on the billows, an unearthly, formless, chance-like apparition of life. As with a low sucking sound it slowly disappeared again, Starbuck still gazing at the agitated waters where it had sunk, with a wild voice exclaimed- "Almost rather had I seen Moby Dick and fought him, than to have seen thee, thou white ghost!" "What was it, Sir?" said Flask. "The great live squid, which, they say, few whale-ships ever beheld, and returned to their ports to tell of it." Moby Dick, chapter 59, Herman Melville |

Wow, can't wait to see how the Squid War turns out! Looks like the humans are winning, but those squids are looking like they might have an ace up their collective sleeves! Did you check out La Bufadora whilst in Ensendada? Did you pick up a miniature Mexican flag for yourself?? :) Bowie |

Very cool stuff, Ken! It's amazing how you compose these and put all of your elements together in a layout so that they seem to harmonize - like they started out together all along. Great to see that the Mexicans are enjoying the sensations of the Tilt-A-Whirl too! |

I love the Field Museum! Making those weird waxy dinosaurs in the machines was the best. Went back about 5 years ago and they moved the dinosaur machine to the basement near "Bushman" and got my fix of that awesome hot wax smell. I am a Huffer to the core! Jen |

Clarita-Actually,Terrill was encouraging me to read and draw but i couldn't for some reason... That's what I've meant to say. It was a joke about you having tons of energy, because if when you are painting a lot you still have a lot of energy to go around TC and stuff (at list compared to myself you are a tornado), you not painting for 4 days could be though to handle, that's what I imagine and was giggling about :) |

Ken, you have surpassed the old masters and have drifted into a new realm so far away distance no longer has meaning. You are now in a closed universe in the land beyond beyond. There is no way to return, but I imagine you are at peace with this isolation/trail blazing. |

Well.... Got a bunch o stuff to share on this lovely Monday mornin.... tikiracer! TravelingJonesy- hankee! Robb-Blah! Blah! Blah! back to you! Clarita-Thanks my dear! Onto the ShEW.folks! Here's some final close-ups,where you can see where i added some slight tinting in the suckers and a few other areas,as well as deepened some shadows and brought out some highlights the floor of the sea... tentacles piercing the surface this fellow chasing a poor Islander up the hill.... here's some of the background village and hills... the stars falling out of the Night sky.... What Polynesian inspired painting DOESn't have a volcano!?!?!? The strange ceremony between chief and cephalopod... Tips Ahoy! Sea bottom.. Think I'll keep this around the studio for a few days Next offering is actually gonna be for the TIKOT-the Tiki themed Tarot show where it pictures him as the REAPER! Well, here's my offering for the invitation.... PNG and MARQUESAN skullheads... a Maori skullish head.... and a skeletal Moai! and a feathered cloak and helmet for the Hawaiian chief skeleton.... Now all i gotta do is pick a font and set up the invite! I'm gonna sepia-tint this before framing,so stay tuned! and for the last entry... How appropriate is that? Well, this Judgement was more of a nod to the Rider-Waite tarot cards and other So, this time,it was a MAORI approach to this time-honored "Day of Reckoning" Instead of being raised from their graves here is the middle figure.. this fellow on the right is still a little wobbly.. and here's the Angel meant to replace Michael in the original card..... I love the arrangement of his arms as they hold the trumpet.... Well, that's it for now, friends! |
