You must have more fun plying your craft than any artist on TC. Anyone who really looks at your work and doesn't smile is in a bad way. That's huge in my book.

The fish varieties are impressively well done.

I think I detect some RESEARCH goin' on.

Slick.

Man... Even your doodles are fantastic!

Hello Kids!

Markusk-no politics on Tiki Central! :)

Mike-Thanks man! Detail is my middle name!
I MAY tone down the yellow, but i kind of like it,and nothing gets a scene more magical than a color askew!

ZeroTiki-Finally glad i can get back to drawing after all those paintings for the exhibition! Took a lil while, but I've finished around 80 pages of sketchbook since the beginning of December, and Man! Does it feel good!

foamy-guilty as charged... It should be a joy ,if it isn't then what's the point?
I mean, i love the work of Francis bacon, you can feel the crazy joy he experienced while in his world...an escape from the madness and chaos outside...
Smiles and happy are the hooks that grab an audience and make them step in closer
and maybe even find more content where there was just emotion..

Robb-Yuppers,my friend! Research is a duty most artists take lightly..Fools!

Tiki-Lee-Thanks Buddy! Sending you some love down Nevada ways!

And,as always, thank you to all of you who visit and gaze....
:)

Sorry for the delay, but I've been distracted by things interstellar lately...
http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=93402&id=1451540979&l=cb1c859662

and the Walls of Jericho were calling a few weeks back as well...
http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=96910&id=1451540979&l=5153b06af2

Was just about to re-tackle some more undersea studies when...
WHAM! a Shrunken Head piece was needed for an upcoming exhibition in April

so i didst one...
And seeing that i finally had some material that was Tiki/Polynesian Pop/Exotic
i thought i would share..

i started this one on a ground of black gesso
drew it out in white pastel pencil (easy to wipe off after the paint is dry)
Grabbed some acrylics and cel-vinyl and started applying washes until it was done!
Well, it's done, but I've got a million other things to do so you'll just have to check out the step-by-step pix! Enjoy!

the initial studies for this piece are here...
http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=98926&id=1451540979&l=7478b5b8d8

and here's the painting step-by-step...

And here it is finished!
"Jungle Home"
acrylic and cel-vinyl on black gesso on canvas

Thanks for peekin your head in!

Love the nest in the mouth! Excellent!

So cozy!

Another masterpiece. Love it!

W! o! W!
.............UH.....WOW!

Love it Ken! What's the texture under the black gesso? Recycled canvas? :D

Dig it!

REALLY dig it!
You've taken grotesque and made if beautiful through your rendering skills.
Bravo!

Hello Kids!
Mahalos for your visits and comments!
They always make me smile!

zerostreet-Thanks! I wanted to put a little twist to the shrunken head theme for this exhibition, because i knew a lot of folks would be taking the angle of terror and horror
and all those implications...
That old adage of "Leave the world a better place than how you came into it"
crossed my mind, and the thought of a shrunken head providing a home for a family of birds
touched me as humorous and a lil sweet at the same time..
Of course, there are terrifying implications if the viewer really digs deep
the concept of choosing a home with a rotting foundation
and the like...but i prefer the sweeter tones resonating to the viewer first....
most folks look at a painting for about 2-3 minutes max....
probably because it don't move!

Bill!-Totally Cozy!Really diggin that pair of marqs you're doing for the SkinnyDogs!
Inspiring!

mp-Shucks! get that shrunken head stuff done!
the clock is ticking! and i wanna seee! i wanna seee!

TIKIVILLE-thank ye kindly! We aims to please around here!

MadDog! Appreciate the kind words,my friend!
No recycled canvas on this one!
The texture under the black gesso is just lil ol me applying it onto a brand new canvas and not sanding it down and just leaving the swooshes and swirls in there... Once i get a matte finish over it,i'll be able to photograph it better!

Brad! Thanks so much old buddy! What great paths are chosen by the artist on their journey!Bravos from Brad are always humbling! Gimme a jingle soon! i wanna hear all about those shows and the calender and the towels and all that! Miss you man!

Decided to really get crackin on these 2 4x4 foot wood Bamboo framed undersea paintings...
but first..i needed to get the study done!
Originally,this was conceived as a 3x5 footer
but evolved into 2 4x4 footers
A few pages back (169 and 170)are the undersea studies i did BEFORE doing this study!
So if you haven't seen em,Go check em out!
Maybe they'll inspire you to take a dip into undersea realms...
Unless you're Brad Parker...He's like man from Atlantis when it comes to undersea painting!
and let's not forget the mind-blowing work of Thor too! and Dennis!and...
i could go on.....
SHEESH!
Well anyways,you ask...WHY?
Why Ken?
Are you crazy? Is that why?
Well.... no
Whenever i catch a fire, i let it spread and draw and learn until it's spent
All those reference/sketchbook studies i can use in other paintings!
They just happened to spill out during this project.
i WISH i could put them ALL IN THE PAINTING,but I'm crazy, not stupid...

Anyways ,here's my progress on the study
(with the actual text from my FaceBook notes on these included as a FREE Bonus!)

After a very productive weekend,i think this study is almost finished and ready to be formulated into two 4 by 4 foot paintings on wood with an eventual Ultra classy bamboo Ben frame!
As you can see,I've added a Nautilus,a stone Hei-Tiki with a stone stairway and Moai atop it,i also thickened the outlines of a few objects and characters Just so they read better against the colored background....

Added a fish and some background up top to establish some scale and distance....I've intentionally enlarged some animals and shrunk others ,as well as took liberties with markings,fins,etc.. Same thing with the undersea plants....some are actual plants, while others are a mixture of different undersea elements to form "palms" and pseudo tiki torches and the like....I've kept some areas a bit more open just so the eye can breathe... (did i just say that?) Well, actually...so it can rest there... I'll be putting lil crabs and snails and starfish and stuff in the actual painting,tho... But subdued....

Added another Moai and an orongo (Birdman) carving behind him...I wanted to do a Janus orongo, and may fit one in the background of the piece..in the distance... Also added a curious barracuda floating in some kelp...and a pseudo tiki torch, some background and a delightful angelfish! I really want this to be a painting that the client can enjoy forever!

This area is really getting fun! First off, behind the pufferfish staring contest fellow,I put another mermaid with a seahorse in one hand, and the other slightly holding onto the upper bridge of the moai's nose... Also added a Stone Marquesan, and intersting entrance to some sort of cave, and finally got to apply an early idea of multicolored pufferfish against a dark background to add to the mysterious feel of the piece...
Getting excited to start the actual painting!

So there you have it!
You're all caught up
and now i gotta get to bed for the work week ahead!
G'night Ohana!

Really really nice, Ruz! Can't wait to see the finished panels...

Beautiful! Coming along quite "swimmingly" Kinny. Now you have to break this study up into 2 pieces?

Hiiii Kinny!

Daym Boss! Nice underwater goodies there!

The Shrunken Head thingy is gonna be fun! I was was thinkin' about doing a Damien Hirst kind-a thing for the show; in which I display the progressive stages of actually shrinking the heads of real rabbits...under glass of course...but, nawww :)

It is gonna be freaky though

Z

Droooooooooooooooooool

~Tails!

B

Beautiful Man!!!!!!!!!!!

Aloha Kids!

Just a small offering for y'alls this time
but it's a study for a bigger painting for Mojave Oasis
and i gotta start on this stuff cause the date is creeping up FAST!

but first...

Greg!
This is almost as far as i can go with this...Publicly
I may show little close-ups and details (as soon as i secure permission)
but they will be unveiled for public consumption in a mere few months!

MadDog-Yup.....i gotta break it into 2 pieces...
do a little bit of rearranging elements...trying a few things
(switching the direction of the light shaft on the right hand piece...move a fish ...that kind of stuff)
but right now i'm awaiting a dialogue with the patron to make sure i'm on the right track...
i wonder if i should MO in this piece....in the background....

GROG-Hello Ernie! Missing you and your humor and your bald pate!
considering the bob show you're starting up....Should be able to do a piece, but the attendance part i may have to skip on due to Mojave Oasis last minute stuff....but we'll see!
are you goin to M.O?

Babs! Yet another old friend i don't get to see or talk to enough!
Coming from your twisted genius,i eagerly await your shrunken head piece..
Shrunken head rabbit or no rabbit.... a real one would be creepy AND get us some great press from PETA!
Now a sculpted shrunken rabbit head would be AWESOME!
Miss you buddy!

Zero-wipe that up and get back to work!

BeachBumz-much obliged,Sir! Glad i could transport you away for a brief moment!

Thank you all again for your visits and comments and questions and insights!
They are much appreciated and they help me push myself...
kinda like the way you work a little better in class when the teacher walks by?
well, it's kinda like that!
and i wanna thank you for filling in when the energy and the Marine Corps discipline are low....
:)

here's my humble offering for today...
it's a study for a piece i will be making for Mojave Oasis...
Need some new inventory...
I have a few spare Bamboo Ben frames lying around the studio
and i'm gonna make good use of them
because BEN is the MAN!
just saw him and Spermy and their lovely adorable significant others at the Melvins a few weeks back!
They freakin played AMAZON!
i was in a Hardcore Heavy Metal Sludge Fog while they played
jacked up on Bushmills and Coke and ,even at my age,ROCKIN OUT!

needless to say,i'm still recovering
but the spirit got re-energized!

Anyways, here's the study to the painting i will be doing
probably tonight!

"SunBringer"
i may change the Brick Red to a Sand or maybe Lt. Olive
....
I'm on the fence...

gotta get to work! Aloha!

RH

I like the color scheme in SunBringer but am curious if you can jazz it up with the colors you mentioned. It's a heck of a cool design.

Hello Robb!
Sorry i missed your call!
soon,friend,soon....

Did someone say JAZZ UP!?!?!?

Was gonna post some step-by-steps on this here guy
but only got one step in there...too busy Artjammin over here with Mel,TikiG,Raves,
Kiki von Birthday girl, and her delightful daughter,Chloe.
At least you can see how i sketched out the lines and then began color-blocking it in
before the final lighting!

Here's a detail with a few of the colors started...

And here it is....DONE!
I think the Olive jazzed it up better than the initial blue
and the bt orange also helped to ground it more into a primitive palette

"the Sunbringer"
acrylic and cel-vinyl on wood with a Bamboo Ben frame!

and here it is closer...w/o the frame...

and here's a close-up to show you the rough and raw lighting and weird accents!

W

Dang! I really like this. In a way it's not the sort of thing I'm usually drawn to (not really into Tiki stuff) but there's so much energy in this it's almost hypnotic. I dig the colors, not ones most would go for when thinking of a "SunBringer." The earthy tones go beyond mere sunlight and imply all that comes from the sun.

I also just got to see the mermaid pic on a good screen...Friggin beautiful. I feel like I could swim into it. It seems to generate light.

You should really stick to this painting stuff, you seem kinda good at it.

Your brain is a national treasure, hugs, Wendy

Hello Folks!
Been working on the "twins" lately!
Started them a week ago on Friday
and have made splendid progress!
But alas! my dear patron gave me permission to
ONLY post close-ups and details
until the two are unveiled in a few months....

woofy-Glad you like the Sunbringer!
the colors asked me not to throw them into a stereotypical solution
so you are correct about the semi-earthy palette!
the Sun is Brought to earth...color-wise.
Glad you enjoyed the study for the "twins"
the client requested "more Blue"
so the paintings will have the same vibe
but a different feel
if that makes sense.....
Thanks for all the Stoke and Rah-Rahs
Keeps me going whilst in this art cave!

Wendy-and so is yours,love!
:)

Well, i posted one detail on FB
and i'll be posting a different one here...
to make you all do some work as well...
i got 40-50 some hours into these already
it's the least you could do,eh?

Thought i'd share one of the Moais from this last session...
it's funny how a painting evolves from studies to final sketch to actual piece!
Leaves some mystery for me!
Anyways.... Have a Sunny Day kiddies!

K

WOW! That's just about all I can say. Wow!

Mysterious Marq and his Puffyfish fwends

Here's my favorite close-up of these sessions...

A few more touches and then it's time for bubbles and then....
off to get some beautiful Boo Frames!!!!

Rousseau on LSD? Now THAT's a QUOTE!
Just getting lost in the coral and the schools of fish made me feel like Rousseau,
wandering about and examining the inhabitants and vegetation and attempting to
capture that experience for the viewer...transporting them. Thanks for the props bub! I know you're no stranger to larger works,so I'm glad we could share that
artistic excitement! Wait til you see the finished pieces....i sat cross-legged in front of them and smoked a ciggie after finishing and MAN! it feels like you're in an aquarium ! FUN! FUN!

Brad-YOU rock MY world, old friend! A constant exchange of inspiration! The waterfall in the background of your latest piece just takes me there! What atmosphere you've achieved in these past couple of pieces! Thanks for being an art-brother! i hope we can hang out soon!

Doug!-Just saw your finished "Target Practice" piece for the Shrunken head show yesterday while we was hangin it.....STUNNING! A few of the artists came by to drop off their pieces (who were outside of the Tiki scene) and they were blown away! YOU are out of control,Mr. Horne! Let's ArtJam again soon!

Lovin' the whole color palette, Ken! Can't wait to see it live!

Love the plesiosaur, the Hindu goddess-multi-armed mer-deva and the nautilus, an' the big Chinese fish, an, an, an, allo em'! Great work Ken!

5n3aky Tiki

Wow, Ken... this one is so joyus and filled to the max with detail and color annd movement. I love it. Makes me want ot do antoher under water piece. Great thing about under water scenes, is you can have "things" just where ever you want them in the 3-D plane. No careful perspective to work out...everything is floating...anywhere you want it!

Anyways, love it, love it , love it.

U RAWK!

Hope to be in LA sometime this year and to be in your physical presence. You always inspire with your art, and your person. Looks like Oct... maybe sooner ...

ALOHA!

Looking really good Kinny! you have been working hard. Take a break and have a cookie.

....while sitting at the bar in the Mermaid Lounge MoJaVe Oasis, Ca., look slightly up.

It's like you are in the paintings! ( and that was during the day, sober!)

I'm not braggin' or nothin', but I got to see these 2 paintings last week live and in person in their full-tilt glory - 48 square feet of AWESOMOSITY!!!!!

Bill-Great seeing you carvin up a storm at Mojave Oasis! ArtJam soon! Blame the palette on Queen K!
She told me to "keep it Blue"! :)

Sneaks-Mahalo-So glad I'm finally able to share the whole kit-n-kaboodle!

Brad-Amen on that "free-floating perspective"!I really DO hope it inspires another underwater painting
out of you! YOU ARE THE MASTER OF THE DEPTHS!!!!! Counting the days til October, old friend!

mp-Thanks for the nudge, bub! and i had quite a few cookies at Mojave Oasis to celebrate! Magical Cookies! :)

Ben-Thank you for building that Incredible mermaid Bar at M.O.
When i asked you to make a frame for these,i didn't expect that frame to be the AWESOMEST BAR ON EARTH!
great seeing you and the tribe this weekend!

Mikey-Always a pleasure camping near you and the missus! Your A-frame tent was an excellent mix of function and ingenuity! I ask Queen K if i could wander behind the bar to check out your creations!
Looks like you outdid yourself, champ! My facvorite part was the coral with the pipecleaners...i know it sounds cheeseball to the uninitiated, but you nailed it! Your attention to detail on these was A-1!

Well....Well.... This is "Other Crafts" so if you wanna see the "Land of the Mermaids" paintings finished
you'll need to go here!
http://www.tikicentral.com/viewtopic.php?topic=35616&forum=21&start=195&195

Thanks folks for all the props and encouragement....it really helped me finish this pup
and kept me in a joyful mood from studies to finished piece!

C

Great new work LLT.
This thread is a sensory overload, I have to be careful with it :)

Over 300,000 views Kinny, wow. You have a lot of fans and I'm one of them. It's worth a trip to Mohave just to see the bar and how you and other tiki artists like MadDogMike made something magnificent, Wendy

Hello Kids!
Been dedicating some time to sketchbooks and drawings lately...
studies for paintings,so I'll include those here....

congatiki-Mahalo pal!If you think this thread is sensory overload, try livin inside me head...
it's a wonder anything gets done with all those voices and flashing images! :)
Come visit anytime, but PLEASE...proceed with caution!

Wendy-Sooo sorry to hear about your fall! 13 steps and then a bump on the head!?!?!
We are all so lucky that it wasn't more damaging than it was! Here's to a speedy 6-week recovery my dear!
You are a true muse to many of us here...a treasure! :)

300,000....wow....now THAT's humbling!
Thank you all for your visits and encouragement and love!
Ohana is strong here!
:)

Well, I'm sending some pieces to an art show at ElroyArtSpace in Portland....
and decided that the show needs a Cannibal King...
So,the next logical thing to do would be...
paint a Cannibal King! duh!
Don't have any shots of the started canvas yet
but will post them maybe tonight...
but first,we need studies.....

"Cannibal King and Headdress"
pencil and watercolor on sketchbook paper

"Cannibal King"
gouache and ink on on sketchbook paper

then i did a study on some watercolor paper
just so i have a nice to sell someday...

"the Cannibal King's Ceremonial Headdress"
ink and gouache on watercolor paper

Finally nailed it with this one!
"the Cannibal King's Dinner"
pen and watercolor on sketchbook paper

as you can see i went more "Ku" than "Lono" with his helmet...
dinnerwear,y'see!
:)
pencilled it in and started painting him last night
will share some progress shots SOON!
Thanks for the visit!
:)

Here it is!
as promised,dear Ohana..
Not just ONE
but TWO
pieces with progress shots!
Looks like it's a gonna be your LUCKY DAY!
:)

First off....
one of a group of pieces I'll be sending to an exhibition in Portland slated for July

"the Cannibal King's Dinner"
acrylic and cel-vinyl on textured and mounted canvas board
(Never tried this canvas board stuff, but Art Supply Warehouse had a BIG SALE ,so i grabbed one to try out.)
Anyways, the texture and light absorption is pretty cool!

Sooooo, Sketched it out lightly in pencil
and proceeded to do light washes of color
building up the helmet and skulls and teeth.
Used a light light almost blueish for the skulls and teeth
and three browns....
the background jungle was an olive drab and rendered all wishy-washy on the background
(i've always admired BigToe's ability to just throw a few brushstrokes around
do a little blending
and BAM!
it's a JUNGLE!
Sometimes i hate being surrounded by geniuses....
Bustin my butt gettin all the details tight
and then Toe stumbles in
spends 20 minutes scribblin like a savant jacked-up on coffee
and he nails it!
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
:)

Welpers....Sometimes Daddy gets tired and needs to find a way to retain the IMPRESSION of a Jungle
but not haveta go all Henri Rousseau on the background..
That way the main focus is the Cannibal king and his delightful din-din! :)
Anyways... i rant.
Here it is
so far.....

As you can see,it's from that sketchbook study from the previous post....

Had to squat him a bit to fit
(Had a Boo Ben frame, but it was just too vertical
and wasn't singing out to me for that piece)
SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
You figgered the chubbier and more squat he looks
the more amusing he will be to the viewers!
2 words.... Patton Oswald!
the guy's funny and he's short and squat....

Anyways......
Here's a real close-up so you can see the pencil and the layers of washes....

Next piece in progress.......
"MoonBird"
acrylic and cel-vinyl on masonite
This one's a stained glass style piece
using the white "leading" instead of the sepia, black,or navy ...
This one was a "sketch out roughly and worry about the rest later" piece
Been slowly warming up to re-approach some older and newer pieces i need to get done
and so sometimes i WING IT!

i sketch out the main lines and flow with a white pastel pencil
sharp as a pinhead! that way when the paint dries
it rubs off with a damp paper towel!

Here's all the outlines done
awaiting shading...

and here's a close-up of the astonished chief and rower...
