S

Nice, log porn going on there.

holy crap that's some major wood right there!!

I can hear the deep bellow of that huge drum already. Cant wait to see how you tackle it.

keep us informed!

J

Yes, a couple of those logs are rather big, The big drum log is kinda intimidating and I afraid to cut into it for fear of wrecking it.

G-- Yes it was a teddy bear. A friend at work wanted to give another friend, who happens to be a Greatful Dead fan, a stone(d) dancing bear pendant. :) I made it out of a purplish rock that is similar to the black stones Paipo uses.

TTT, as soon as I am done with the stone club, I will post it to the Stone carving Q&A thread.

Here are some new rough outs,
A replica of some Marqs that are in Trader Vics Munich and a small garamut drum that is the prototype for the big log in the back ground.

JP,

That Marq looks great..and BIG! Man, is he "packin'" or what?. The drum looks great too. What type of figures will go on the endz? I can't wait to see you saw into that monster log. Always top notch stuff from the P-camp. Always something new and different.

S

JohnnyP the Marq is looking very cool already. Nice
shape and size.
The drum is cool also.

B

Johnny, these are looking like they will be excellent stuffs . I don't know though I'll have to check them out in person first so just finish'um up and send'em on down and I'll let you know??

Better idea Johnny, I'll pick 'em up and drive 'em down to Benzart
for you. The Marq is gonna be really cool, I love his head already.

Good stuff coming out of the Michigan woods there Johnny!

Cool temps again, but good to see the sunshine in your yard. We'll be back to normal temps by the weekend.

Love the Marq!

B

Hi Johnny P,

Your work is always very impressive but this start of marq is more impressive.
I can't wait or new pix of the marq and drums.

Benjamin.

B

... what kind of wood is that behind the marq ? :)

Thanks !

Benjamin.

Aloha JohnnyP!!!
Looks like you have a nice pile of logs to work with and that looks like a sweet start to your Marq carving. Looking forward to watching it al come together,Aloha , Mooney

BIGGINS!!! What type of wood are those monstrosities?

B

Any update for this beauty ?

Mahalo,

Ben.

S

My daughter just looked at this and said: "Dad that looks like Cameron (her brother) doing the pepe dance."

J

Hi,
G yep he's packing, can't seem to trim it off, just seems wrong.

Ben, why don't you come on up and escape that hot Florida temperatures, you can check em out in person, then guide me to how to corrected them.

Lake and Conga, hope the summer finally started up there, need to see both of you carving more.

TikiFreak1- It did feel good to get the saw out, now it's your turn to get busy again, you've kinda slowed down a bit. Get choppin'.

Mooney - Thanks, always a treat to see your carvings as well.

Benella and Surfintiki- The large logs are Cottonwood and I have a few more that size to bring home.

Bete, Seeksurf thanks for the comps.

Sungod, I literally spit my coffee out when I read your post. From now on this tiki is called PeePee Dancer

Not much of an update, but here goes.

Nice update JP. I like the classic look of the PPD and the drum is looking pretty sweet too - but not too easy to see? Maybe some bigger individual pics?
I was watching the image above waiting for it to move...and it didn't. Phew!

B

Would love to see an update too !

Ben.

S

Ya, whats going on side ways east there?

T

Yeah , come on JP , get the camera out .
I wanna see the waka you are carving out of that big log , preferably floating on the water ......

J

Hey, I'm finally back from traveling and visiting and doing other stuff that gets in the way of carving ( and posting replies to all the great work here). Thanks for the bumps and inquiries about status of these projects.

Even though it doesn't look like it, I did manage to get a couple hours in.

I included a couple of closer up shots of the drum "heads" as requested.

Hellz yeah Johnny, both of those are looking sweet!!

wha..huh, how'd ya hollow that log like that? Wow!

G
GMAN posted on Mon, Jul 7, 2008 7:25 PM

I know how he hollows them out Surfin'...but I can't tell you.....he might come after me....

Nice work Johnny. Thanks for putting up pics. That Marq is shaping up nicely! How tall is that fellow? What kind of wood?

Johnny, some really nice stuff going on up there in the woods. I can tell you're happy to be working outdoors comfortably. :)

Hope you're not getting all the the rain we continue to get over here, the mosquitoes are insane. As soon as that sun starts going down I run for the door.

B

Thanks for sharing those nice pix, Johnny.
You've done a super work on both pieces.

Ben.

J

Thanks

The wood is pine, red pine I think. He is about 5 feet tall, I haven't measured yet.

Here is the update on the marq, I haven't made any measurable progress on the drum.

Lake it is nice outside and I love this weather, bring on summer and let it stay for 11 months of the year.

B

Johnny, these are really looking great, Especially since you are doing them in Punishing pine. That looks kinda like a Smug Smirk on that Marq, Wonder why? Dayum you have really got some Skills there son!

S

Hell ya Johnny this guy is tops great job!

B

This marq is amazing and seem very smooth and neat. Great work on that one, Johnny.
Hats off

Benjamin.

Ah yes.....more delightful chippings from JohnnyP. He's coming along brilliantly mate! I wanna see what you have cooking with those hands.....

T

Look at that little pee-pee on that guy! That's cute!

Heh heh...

Awesome stuff JP - I love the slot gongs too - I gotta make a good one soon...

Nice work...!

:) Certainly no doubting this fellow's P-ness!

B

why do you think he has that smug grin?

J

Yes he does have a "little" bitty peepee. Actually this is based off of a post Bigbrotiki posted of a tiki in Trader Vic's in Europe.

Thanks for all of the positive comments.

I have not had a lot of time to carve due to many family weddings and other obligations. However I did manage to collect some new carving materials.

Here are some new logs, one is a log I plan to use for carving a dugout outrigger canoe- see post in "other events"

What a friggen haul man!

Nice that you had a way to transport them, I had to leave the last big log because it wouldn't fit in the mini van, too big and more importantly, too heavy.

Weight is the biggest drawback.

This will be a fun project for you, and I know you'll enjoy the process!
