Joined: Jun 12, 2006 Posts: 7763	LLT little lost tiki Posted posted on Tue, Sep 8, 2009 5:33 PM BEFORE I GET TO POSTING THE ACTUAL CANVAS IN PROGRESS... I'd like to share a few fun photos of the cruise to Ensenada... Monumental Street Art! great street signage! here's my wife with a background example... and look! a Tilt-a-Whirl! in mexico! a Mexican tilt-a-whirl! Viva la Funtime! Joy! Damn fence! Que Lastima! i want one! Tanks for the memories! thus concludes the tourist photoslide show.... thank you for your patience.... well...the Squid invasion canvas has started.. but first, some close-ups of the study for it a study in contrasts,at times ... as you compare it to the canvas.... olcano and stars falling out of the sky Revelation stylee! i had to simplify the figures lest they steal attention from the SQUIDS! they are merely pawns and victims in this Grand Scheme of a painting! one slithering ashore while another attempts to scale a hill... carnage....silent wet tentacled carnage... check out the fellow running... he dropped his spear! i used a lip with a tapa-ish motif to separate the surface from below it.. i'll be using it to rim the clouds on the upper part on the canvas... the KRAKEN! actually a giant Humboldt "Red Devil" Squid! Okay! now that you're familiar with the initial inspirational elements let us move forward.... to the CANVAS!!!!! First off, this was to be based on those polynesian Storyboards that are carved from wood...A lot of them are very simple and basic but i found a few that had some pretty good detail.. not LLT SuperHappyFunTime detail''' but enough to satisfy my horror vacuii inclinations... So first thing is i went to the Art Supply warehouse and got some supplies mainly a 24 x 36 canvas! we had wanted an 18x36-but it don't exist in standard frame land... :( Anyways,first thing was to grab some burnt umber/raw umber/sepia/naples yellow/raw umber/etc and did some wide brushstrokes down the canvas vertically.. After that i sketched the scene-adjusting for size as compared with the sketch... (ARTISTS NOTE:None of these have been adjusted for color just think "wood color" okay? thank you) after pencilling in a part of it,i began to brush in with Raw umber the outlines ,and to add washes of color,to build up the shadows.. the shadows are the most important in this piece because i want to keep that low relief illusion going... Love this style,it retains a bit of that Indian miniature meets Giotto kind of perspective...like a roman frieze.. added an extra squid here.. big eye! sing it like that Cheap trick song! Here's a good close-up to show the washes i build up.. SECOND DAY! much progress-more fleshing out of the sculptural elements.. trying to get the shafts of light to look carved yet still remain a painting.. Squizzes! added suckers to give it more movement and slitheriness! big eye under the tapa lip... the ceremony on the boat.... slowly coming to life! worked out the figural simplification a lil bit better! Thanks buddy! the study i posted was after about 5 false starts.. i would grab the strongest details from the failures and build upon them... Looks like it's paying off! Thanks so much for "getting" it so far! Viva La Tilt-A-Whirl! :) Well, here's the progress on "Night of the Falling Stars" Fleshing out more detail/Bringing areas out/Pushing areas back.... Burnt Umber and Naples Yellow are my friends! :) Getting the stars star-ted... Note the tapa-ish line for the cloud/volcano smoke... this way, the ocean floor is separated from the surface which is now separated from the sky... Here's the Land Encroaching Beast slowly receiving some form... Here's underwater big Squid,a little more fleshed out.. more ocean floor-trying to make the shafts of light more sculptural... I'm really pleased with the way this area is developing... A lil more work on the foreground sinking boat and the strange chief and his odd ceremony in the background... The volcano and the stylized clouds and vegetation slowly taking shape and getting some well-deserved depth... and Lastly... I'd like to say Farewell to two old friends.... "Dance of the Cannibal King" 36 x 36" gouache on canvas and "Arrival of the Pineapple King" 48 x 72" (4 x 6 feet!) I sold them BOTH at the Freaky Boutiki Gallery this weekend! Thanks HAnk! This one is an elaboration of an old piece "the night parade" but it was calling for some newer characters and a different daytimey mood... Here it is.... (about 1" got cut off on the left side of this.. i'll get a better shot later...) "Tiki Joe's Jungle" ink and marker and water-soluble pencil on Watercolor paper This guy will be heading up North in the next month or so to assist Joey and Sammy with their Dreamtime journeys! :) Enjoy!

"Moai Kai" Tissue Paper stain,ink and pencil on Cold Press watercolor paper (the rough textured kind) Hunter Catcher Ingestor This next piece also channels a moody memory from the Mai Kai in Florida More of a feeling,than literal depiction.. a mood piece! it started as a study of two angles of a beautiful Kava bowl and grew into a piece torn between MANY worlds a stained glass abstract world a semi-cartoony realism place and a dreamy hazy memory of a magical place.. "After hours" Tissue Paper stain,ink and pencil on Cold Press watercolor paper (the rough stuff!) Please excuse the glare on parts of the black it was photogged it in an obnoxious light Here's the DEETs! The "tapa line" cuts thru the whole piece and also succeeds in establishing two worlds/points-of-view to the bowls stoked! :) Wonder what's sloshing in that craaaaaazy bowl? love this guy's expression! like he's getting the short end of the stick when it comes to hauling this bigazz bowl around! :lol: And.... more progress on "Night of the Falling Stars" almost there,kiddles! YEEEe-e! :) Just layering washes in already established areas while slowly building up and adding new elements.. over and over again..... This fellow feels an urge to slink up the island hill! A stoic and reverent Chief amongst all the other frantic fools! Is it a Giant menace or a Sea God returned? Here's an Ultra Close-up Stars falling from the Sky! You can see the water soluble pencil lightly sketched and awaiting development... Welpers...that's it! Time to relax and go rest the ol' eyes from computer fuzz mind control light! FINALLY got this puppy finished (sans "fine-tuning) so scroll below and cheggitout,my friend! hankee! i remember! Too bad we forgot to click some photos of the Kraken.. Nobody will ever believe it! and beware of the Curse of the Unlucky BigToe Sketchbook! it's claimed more lives than most felons!!!! Robb-Blah! Blah! Blah! back to you! Now pipe down with the embarrassing platitudes and whip out some more ebony velvety goodness! Clarita-Thanks my dear! I guess that one was a hit....cause it's now readying itself to live in a mystery patron's home! yay! We think alike,Clarita... i think many artists do it's just that their hands makes the results look different! :) Onto the ShEW.folks! First off.... "Night of the Falling Stars" is pretty much finished (asides from some fine-tuning here and there...) with the sides painted and it awaiting some wire hanging stuff on the back... here it is in all it's 24x36" glory..... Here's some final close-ups,where you can see where i added some slight tinting in the suckers and a few other areas,as well as deepened some shadows and brought out some highlights to help the "carved" illusion read better! the floor of the sea... tentacles piercing the surface and a desperate rower calling for help! this fellow chasing a poor Islander up the hill.... here's some of the background village and hills... the stars falling out of the Night sky.... Are they heralds of the Squid's arrival or merely onlookers? What Polynesian inspired painting DOESn't have a volcano!?!?!? The strange ceremony between chief and cephalopod... it appears the chief has taken his servant's spear and is conversing with the beast.... hmmmm Tips Ahoy! and a tentacled victim struggling to get free... Sea bottom.. Think I'll keep this around the studio for a few days and enjoy it before sending it off to it's new home.... :) Next offering is actually gonna be for the TIKOT-the Tiki themed Tarot show at hodadhank's Freaky Boutiki gallery next month... he asked me to do a Death card (seeing as it's the most iconic) and i was gonna do a collage,but got inspired by this olde-timey Frenchy tarot card.. where it pictures him as the REAPER! harvesting heads from across class lines... Well, here's my offering for the invitation.... PNG and MARQUESAN skullheads... a Maori skullish head.... and a skeletal Moai! i likee! :) and a feathered cloak and helmet for the Hawaiian chief skeleton.... Now all i gotta do is pick a font and set up the invite! YAY! I'm gonna sepia-tint this before framing,so stay tuned! :) and for the last entry... in above mentioned TikiTarot show the Last Judgement card was picked for yours truly! How appropriate is that? Well, a few years back, decided to tackle a 5x5 foot Last Judgement piece because it's a genre that not enough great artists have tackled.... Well, this Judgement was more of a nod to the Rider-Waite tarot cards and other versions of this card.... So, this time,it was a MAORI approach to this time-honored "Day of Reckoning" Instead of being raised from their graves instead they are rising from small pools of water like resurrected Venuses.. here is the middle figure.. inspired by an object found in a book about 1690-1790 polynesian artifacts.... this fellow on the right is still a little wobbly.. and here's the Angel meant to replace Michael in the original card..... I love the arrangement of his arms as they hold the trumpet.... Well, that's it for now,friends! have a Great Day!
