Lake hits the mark again! Great work on the Kava, you know I dig those
Rapa Nui bird figures :)
Hey, it's turning into summer up here. Haven't had a chance to carve all week
cuz I spilled out big time skiing last weekend and bruised my ribs. Can't
sleep, can't laugh, definitely can't sneeze, but I CAN always cruise Lake's
thread for entertainment.

Brilliant!

Thanks so much Pappy and Conga. I appreciate the compliments!

Conga, ouch! Hope you heal up soon!
I have been in anti-Winter mode this year. Bought some new snowboard gear, yet still didn't go out once.
Winter came on too quick, and I wasn't into it.
But signs of Spring are here now. Temps in the 40's finally, melting snow and sunshine.
Soon we'll be back outdoors carving tikis in the sun!

S

Very nice. For a flat piece of wood this thing is popping out 3D big time.
You nailed this fella to the Tee.

I just said "Wow, that's awesome" aloud. Very nice, my friend. I will be purchasing one of those one of these days.

Seeks, thanks so much. This one made me nervous since it was kinda out of the box.
Faces are a challenge for me with all the curves and all, and I don't have much depth to work with.
But I'm really pleased with how it turned out. The challenge is to see if I can do it again!

Thank you Woody. I'm glad you like it! I've been kinda flowing along doing some things that I've had an interest in doing for a while, but never got around to.
I will be making a few more of these, and its more than likely I will have 2 in my suitcase for Bamboo Ben's event.

Lake! Sweet piece! I would love to see a few progress shots as you went...you know that stuff helps us out!
I can't tell, is that shell in the eyes or painted?

Thought I'd pop in and say hello... been super busy.

Here's a shot from my first in-ground carve a few weeks ago.

This stump was a tree that grew up through the tree that is still standing.

Hope to get back on and post when things slow down a little... not that busy isn't good!

Nice to see you back in action LakeS, looks good. Being busy
is a good thing, but we always need to see whatever carving you are
doing :)

Yay, been waiting for you to pop up again. Good to see you, Keep em coming...

S

Looking good. I like the grain or rings in the mouth.

B

Congrats on the TikiMag article! Well deserved, bro.

Bowie

Congrats on the Tiki mag Spread. Just read it.

WOW!!! :o They should put these pieces to a museum! :D

Aloha again! Got a little time to post here for a bit!

I've just been cranking away non stop getting ready for Ohana next week! Awards, gifts, merchandise... you name it, I'm making it!

congatiki, thanks my Northern friend! Barely time to breathe lately! I'll try and get some more of what I've been doing posted!

drasticwagon and seeks, thanks guys!

Bowana, thanks for the congrats! I have not seen it yet. Not sure when I will be able to get a copy, but I am looking forward to it.

Watango, thanks for the welcome back! Good to hear from ya! Things have been good here. Very busy, but lot's of fun!

Andy, thanks my friend! I hope to get a copy as soon as they get into town here.

TikiForce, thanks for the kind compliment! I've got a ways to go yet I think, but thanks! :)

Ohana is next week, but I'm not relaxing just yet!
Here's a 3 foot 9 inch "Kona Style" Ku I started tonight.
Carved from very hard Ash.

Chipping away

Right through the core... just like chopping through a 9 inch baseball bat.

Hope to have the carve wrapped up by Thursday night!

hey lakes/C'mon dude squeeze in that head and lets see a body!Cheers Watango

A

Maybe that's what I've been doing wrong. I usually carve the body first and head last. :) I've been watching this thread for a while and all of your stuff is great. I hope to learn the secrets of your staining technique. Your stuff is always so beautifully finished.

Watango, you're in luck. A beautiful day allowed me to crank this guy out in record time.

Head and body!

Now, on to finishing him up with some color!

amate, I always start with the mouth, as that is the deepest part of the whole tiki. From there I just work outwards. Up to the top of the head, then down to the feet.
Thanks for the kind compliment on my work, I appreciate it!

For finishing just keep experimenting! It took me years of playing with different techniques until I settled on a method I liked.

S

Love this big mouth Hawaiian. Like i said you are riding the Mana on this one.

Much thanks Seeks! I've really been stoked on your tikis, and I've decided to dive into some Hawaiian style for a bit!

He's done!

What a fun carve!

I wondered why this log was hidden away in a dark corner of the studio.

Now I know it was just waiting for the right time to emerge!

Ohana this weekend!

Here's one of the pieces that will be available there... a 3 Foot Marquesan Pole that I carved a few weeks ago.

P

dude, that Marq pole is the shiz-nit.

Your stuff is amazing man.

Great job on the new one. Glad to see you back in action, looks like you are happy as well.

Busy BUSY! Stuff is looking great Lake. I'm gonna miss Lake at the Lake dammit! Ohana only 4 hours from here, but I got a gig right in the middle of it.
Have a great time out there, the weather should be more tropical than the last one.

Nice work Lakes, the little guy turned out rad!Cheers Watango

Love this guy! Big Mouth rocks.

Many thanks everyone!

Finally got a second to catch my breath around here... but not for long as I've got to continue packing!

Ohana!

that last hawaiian piece is beautiful....i love the design and the finish. what process did you do to get such a great finish? i would understand if its a secret though......great work as usual. always enjoy seeing your post

Thats fantastic looking. Nice job.

Chimp and shirtman... many thanks for your kind compliments!

Many years of trial and error before arriving at this method of finishing.

I think the finish of a tiki sort of develops along with an artist's distinctive style... each one is different!

Experiment with everything, and above all have fun!

That beautiful Tiki is now in my home, and I could not be happier!!!!

Great work Lake Surfer!!!!
