Brenda has very generously offered to help me out this year (a huge thank you). Looking forward to meeting you guys. I've been to the Portland Tiki Kon twice now and had a blast each year. I am working on my own project here in Portland. Thanks again for making me feel welcome. Keith [ Edited by: KeithH 2010-08-29 09:47 ] |

A couple of tweaks to the schedule... Chief Bartender will extend to 1:30 p.m. giving his stop an hour and a half. Vamp's stop will end at 11:00 p.m. Wendy will have the event mug available at all of the stops, but if we could get an idea of how many crawlers will be attending and on which days, that would not only give Wendy an idea of how many mugs to bring all three days, it would help the hosts plan out what they will need. Hello Wendy and everyone, Yes, count Tonja and I in. I left a message previously back on May 14 under "The quin". Please sign Tonja and I up to buy one mug and to participate in the Sacto Crawl. Wendy, Tonja and I came up and said hello while Dan and you were eating at the Bali Hai restaurant during Tiki Oasis. It was nice to see you both. All-- on another note -- I've tried over a year with multiple e mails to our moderator to change my user name from "TheQuin" to "TikiFig". I've never heard back once. Does anyone have an idea on how to get this done? Thank you. Bill Fig [ Edited by: thequin 2010-08-30 14:10 ] |

A little more on the Sacramento Crawl mug. Wendy will have the mugs available at each crawl stop. The cost of the mug will be $50.00 each. This will be limited to one per family at this point. This essentially covers materials, the mold and the costs associated with producing this. Not really any margin in this for labor. However, depending on availability Wendy will be selling additional mugs for $70.00 each. I believe Wendy will still be making these after the crawl and selling them if you do not have an opportunity to purchase one this weekend, you probably will in the future. Thank you for the support! Hi everyone, Duane can count, I didn't know that. I have stopped pouring mugs as of yesterday, I have 50. I don't know how many will survive as I go through each step. Next I will sand and carve the clay where lettering was lost as the mold deteriorated. Clay dust is also very toxic so I'll be back in my hazmat suit. Because the mug (Duane) started this project going I've decided to call my kiln shed the Wendy's Zombie Hut. Clock is ticking, Wendy |

Hi Vamp, we missed you at the Keno Kai last night. We had your mug ready to go home with you. I made a new record for myself today. I cleaned 8 mugs in 10 hours. Dan did have me break for lunch and I quit for dinner. You and the rest of the gang make all the work fun and worth it. The only part of the mug that does not require attention is Duanes name. I told him last night the tiki gods want his name on there so they protect it. I have 10 left to carve then I'll dress up in my hazmat gear to sand them all. Thank you and everyone else for the support, I'll do my best, hugs, Wendy Dan and I painted and put up wood for the glaze test chips. We will cover these boards with nails to hang the chips so I can refer to them in the future. |

Ok... where and when is the start of this? has someone made up a map? Schedule? I see on the first page a list of places and times, but no directions or addresses... or way to sign up for this event, or order mugs..... if its buried in the 12 pages of this thread perhaps it should be put in the first post (if it can still be edited) or added to the last page. |

You will be pm'd the address of the 1st crawl house I believe and will get a list of the other addresses at that location. They wont post people's addresses on TC. If you want to be included just shoot Psycho Tiki D a quick pm to make sure he has ya as an interested party. I am sure he will chime in after me with better details but that is a good way to start |

PAGE 8 HAS THE LIST OF MUGS THAT HAVE BEEN PURCHASED. So far of the fifty 28 are sold and there are 5 wanted by collectors not attending the crawl. $50 for the first mug for a household. I'll break even on these. If any are left over then the second mug by the same purchaser will cost $70 which will help me stock up on supplies for the next crawl mug, 2011. Today after 6 hours of carving I finished fine tuning the last 6 mugs. Tomorrow I will sand them. Thursday they will be bisque fired, yippee! The best part is that I haven't broken any of them during the carving. More photos soon, Wendy |

I really had no idea this thread would grow to 12 pages. Liz is correct, PM or email me @ [email protected] for the address to the first location you plan on attending and the rest of the information for crawl locations will be available for the rest of the weekend. Wendy started a page of interested parties purchasing the event mug on page 8. As for maps, I will try and print out Yahoo maps from and to each stop. Look forward to meeting all of you soon. PTD |

Next Step: Today I carved the numbers into the bottom of each mug. Three AP's for the guys and 47 mugs. Then I sanded the mugs for 6 hours while Dan used an air compressor to blow off the dust. Up next: Bisque, if there are any air bubbles the mugs explode! Wendy [ Edited by: danlovestikis 2010-09-15 19:45 ] |

hehe - you rock lady! Your fine, none of that will explode...cast stuff is pretty sure. If you are seeing air pockets, they are most likely at the top of the castings, yes? Adjust the thickness of the slip you are using a little. This is your first firing with ware? Set controller for ^04 - slow setting (10-11 hr firing), if you want to be extra safe...in future, you should be able to get away with a med. (6.5-7 hour first firing) for "cast ware" if it is bone dry going in. a new air compressor too? damn! When your hot your hot! :) |

Hi Matt, Hi Babalu, In all the mugs I've seen one air pocket at the very top when I cut off the excess, I hope that's the only one. I will slow fire at 04 tomorrow evening. I've only done a test fire so this is my first one with green ware. I did have a shelf touching a wall. I'll load the shelves as you said...touching in the middle when I load the mugs. Fingers crossed. Yep, I've bought every thing I need to be as professional as possible. I just hope nothing breaks for the next 20 years. Hawaii 5-0 the new one has my favorite vampire staring in it. I hope we can join you Matt. Good Night Gentlemen, Wendy |

Morning Wendy, There are no rules in stacking shelves up in a kiln, however, it is good to keep them away from the sides of the kiln, as you have done here. If when you jiggle your set up here, and it does not feel too tipsy, then you are most likely fine. My personal choice is to stack my shelves up as shown below...seems to be a little more sturdy to me. Fire it up! :) |

Hi Babalu, Wow, super fast reply. I was going to give you three more minutes and then I was going to call. I need to buy more of the same height posts so I can do it better when I glaze. It will take two loads to get that done. I'm so happy to be keeping on schedule. I'm very hopeful that I'll get them done. Hi Grog, it's good to hear from two ceramicists that it will work. Tonight I fire! Thanks so much, Wendy |

Gosh, thank you for all the wonderful messages. It's time for an update. I fired for 12.5 hours. I left the areovent running to help with the cool down but it still took 25 hours for it to get to 125 degrees so I could open the lid. I had also put into the kiln 50 glaze test (L shaped) strips. I unloaded them and both mugs and strips were fine. |
