Thanks everybody for the nice comments!
Here's what I've been up to lately.

This one is a sliced out section of a large driftwood log I found at Wailua beach.

This shows the size. It's currently for sale - $400.

This is my first go at Koa wood. :D The tree grew in the mountains of Kauai.

Pic of it from instagram. I'm FireMountainTikis on instagram if you want to follow me.

Thanks for looking!

P

nice work bro!

I'm likin' it...

Great carvings Bill very impressive!

Nice one!

Killer

That tiki is very handsome. You, on the other hand, not so much! Miss seeing you in person Bill, hope Hawaii is being good to you.

Really cool. Dig it.

Love the last picture you have put up. Someone should make a painting of it..
Your work is just perfect. :) :)

I really like your style 4WD, cool beard too!

You all are too nice, well except for MDMike! Mike, here's more ugliness. :D

It's carved out of Albezia wood.

Thanks for looking.

 Another beautiful carve Bill. You are finding some killer driftwood logs over there.

Really killer stuff, man. Dig it.

What kind of wheel(s) do you use on your grinder? I just got a grinder and haven't played with it much - I think the chisels are going to get jealous.

I just use the coarsest discs I can get at Home Depot, I forget if they're 24g or 36g.

Great work Bill, the island life seems to agree with you!

Here's a piece of Koa I've been working on for about a week. I'm sanding today, then ready for stain.

Sweet,
Looks like you started with a nice piece of wood.

P

wow... I didn't realize or see before that it was Koa...

some pretty neat colors inside of that stuff...

Very nice...you're the "King of the Marqs."

D

A week? A WEEK!?!?! It would take me a month and a half to get to that point and it wouldn't look half as good. Nice work...

Thank you guys!
Here's the finished Tiki.
It's a 30" tall piece of Koa that grew about ten miles from my house. :P

It has a great grain, but it's hard to see with the shine from the wax/oil finish.

You can see the grain better in this shot.
It's a real nice carving wood.

Thanks for looking!

Another beauty!!! Forward... Marq!

4

Thanks amate!

I don't do small, but i always get asked for small Tikis, so I thought I'd give it a try.
This is the smallest carving ever by me at 16".

It's Koa again, which carves reeaally nice, BTW.
Turns out I'm having a blast carving this guy! I love the way it's turning out, and am already planning more little pieces! I just need smaller tools.

Dude, u freekin rock

Jon

Heh, thanks Jon!

here it is finished.

That Koa looks great finished! Then again, I've always liked the way you finish them.

One thing for sure Bill, living on the island gives you some great backgrounds for your photos.

Great colors
Awesome carve

Tasty carvage Bromeister!

This was last week's deadline - a 17" tall Marq carved out of Monkeypod.
TC member KAHAKA was coming with his lovely wife for a visit to my island, and wanted to take home a suitcase friendly Tiki.
I only got one shot of the finished little guy before he was spirited away to the mainland!

I started by roughly cutting off the outer white wood, I didn't want a two-tone tiki.

This is before stain.

Finished!

D

Wait, that's all it takes? I'm going to be there at the end of November!

Seriously, though, that's some really nice work...

Cheers!

Way cool

Love the step-by-step Bill ~ step 1 start, step 2 finish :D

Beautiful Tiki, glad to see you're getting visitors.

It's a real nice carving wood.

I wasn't happy with this one so i re-stained it to show the detail more.

Yeah, mo bettah!
BTW, this one is available, $600.

Look me up when you're here!

Sweet one Bill!

I carved this Marquesan Bust almost a year ago now, but I just took this pic of it the other night. The lighting was just right in my kitchen!

This was just with my cell phone. I'll have to recreate it with a real camera.

Very nice.

So awesome! Keep up the amazing work!

P

that last one is killer...

I'd love to see you do a 2 tone on koa where just the details & recesses were in the heartood & you didn't torch it at all...

nice work as usual bro...

4

I think that would be a harder task than I would want to do. That outer white isn't uniform in thickness.
Plus I'm not a fan of the white, it just don't say Koa to me...
Hmm, how bout I send you a piece and YOU do that, lol!

P

I'm already doin' one on a rosewood log.. lol...

P

and I think the key is gonna be carvin' it out so much that between the recesses & tats, very little of the outer layer is lft...
