YAY Dave!
FINALLY!
I'm glad you're painting now for reasons besides money!
I kinda like this study!
You should do more..
just be careful....Sometimes,I've found the power and the immediacy of a study is often better than the painting!
Glad you're actually doing studies
you learn and get a "pre-course"
and you got a nice drawing to sell to the peoples!
i like the Big Toes in the foreground...
and the background is a great attempt to emulate your painting backgrounds!
Glad the Moai power is drawing you back into the Tiki Art Vacuum!

You're right about the studies...I've actually changed the final painting a bunch based on the results of the ink...we'll have to see what comes out when I actually start tossing paint around....

I love the hot press sooooo much more than the cold press....but these drawings are fun and a good change of pace from painting...

B

oooooh.. mee like!!!!!!

Hot Press Arches Watercolor Paper RULES!
you can thrash it and smash it and it still dries flat!
That's cause it's 100% Cotton!
Glad you're finally busting out the
REAL Art Supplies!
YOWZA!

Nice! Looking forward to the painting. About time you did some damn work!
I keed.
We can't all "crank" it out like Ken there.
I'm stoked to see the new stuff.

Thanks guys....hope to get some new stuff up soon now that the show season is winding down. Going to try some new stuff and EVEN get some carving done! Damn I'm a slacker

It's Great to see some more of your stuff!
Toes and Skull--Very cool
looks top notch!

Bitchin' phallic, shroom head Moai!!!! LOL!
Dig that day of the Dead painting there too! You are making some gorgeous backgrounds.

ST

Thanks Sneaky and Duddy...

Here is another one I just finished based on a sketch I did a while ago. I wanted to give it an old school "Roth watercolor on a sweatshirt" feel...I think I'd like to try this one with a monochromatic approach also.

"Marquesan Drags"
11x16 Ink and watercolor on paper

Nice ripoff of my tattoo! :x :P

You got it 4wd....and my next painting I'm going to steal that Fairy dancing in the flowers design from your other arm

wow...
2 Tiki pieces in the space of a week...
be still,my heart!

Welcome back to TIKI Central,Dave!

Wow, you do some great art.
Great time laps vid to now i wanna get my brushes and ink out just when i got all this carving stuff lying around

Thanks guys! I know....tiki tiki everywhere....well I just started a painting of the moai cannibal for the Gasoline show so it looks like we might have 3 tiki works in 2 weeks.....holy !#$%

Well I just finished the last painting out of the studio for 2008! With my traveling back to the east coast for xmas this guy was the last holdout. He's being shipped off to the Gasoline Gallery's "New Years Nuisance" show up in El Segundo in January. Wanted to try something different, and after doing some studies I realized I wanted a darker, more dramatic, almost velvet feel too it....here you go....

"Moai Cannibal"
11x14 Enamel on Clayboard

Great piece
velvet poseur!
great torch light and mystery
and that enamel crack in the corner
reminds me of a distant flash of lightning...
Glad you're back in a Tiki groove....

Looks Great!
Really like the background and especially the Flames!
the skulls rock too

S

That has a 3D effect to it. Looks as if it could start moving at any time.

LLT - I really don't start out with a book full of dick drawings....just happens to pop up in the art later on
Duddy - Thanks! I think those flames are my favorite also!
Sungod - Makes me want to slap on some 3d specs or grab an old viewmaster
Kirby - Great to have you back in the mix man!
Rav - Don't encourage LLT!
Matt- I like the meditation pose also....good for you old guys to relax!

B

i would totally buy that if i didnt have young, impressionable daughters.

hope ur holiday travels r safe and swift!

t

very rad, man. the under painting on it sets the mood perfectly for the torch lit cannibal

Like TIki thomas sez, underpainting/effects are swell contrast foreground and background POW!!! Swell piece!

ST :tiki:

Thanks guys!!

Just got the second in the Zombie series board done for Rye Airfield and this fills my "cute" quote!! Everybody loves zombies...Hand inked and then digitally colored.

C

Here is a retake on a painting I did a while ago....wanted to try a different color approach. 6x24" enamel on clayboard

nice negative space Dave!
it's got a realanimation cel quality to it
like it could be readying to attack the Herculoids
or some other Hanna Barbera heroes!
glad you're re-exploring subject matter
and improving and perfecting them!
i really dig this one....

the zombie one....
not so much...

keep Slingin!

Great stuff Clysdalle! I love a good zombie piece....

GROG really dig the Zombie one.

The octopus one---not so much.

Keep slinging paint.

That's a rad skatedeck painting.
But the octopus is MAD! Not only a great paint job and choice off color but a composition that keeps your eyes glued to that monster.
keep pushing paint

C

Thanks everyone, I do appreciate all the comments...well.....except maybe for LLT's....but I'm thankful for eveyone else

You the Zombie King! It was fun watching that octopussy come together from sketches...keep it coming!

Thanks guys. For this zombie board, I did another time-lapse of the inking and digital coloring as requested by the client. Here is a link to the video...enjoy.

FINALLY....a tiki painting!!!!

Here is a commission I just finished up....painted on a Microsoft Zune mp3 player. It's only 4"x2.5...so it's tiny. Done with 1shot enamel and tiny elves.

I don't see a tiki, I see a shrunken head!

Try again! :P

I have received a ruling from LLT the boss on tiki or not, that this IS acceptable "tiki-ish" TC...

it's true!
we've granted Dave a Tiki immunity clause...

I'm afraid I'm going to have to side with Team 4WD on this one. If there's no tiki on it or in it, you can't call it tiki. :D

It's not a "Tiki" painting. It's a shrunken head.

Please note the word of the lord at the top of this page.....he has spoken...

he's caught us in a legal loophole!

Just cuz I'm a brat, I hafta disagree.

WHAT A LOVELY TIKI-ISH PAINTIN' CLYSE! :D

Really though, rawkin! I like yer previous pieces too, like the revisited Octopus! :)

Thanks Rav...you're my favoritist!!!

FINALLY...ready for the Kona "Salute to the Swordfish" show this weekend!

Well it's still a bit wet....and my eyes are worked from rushing to finish but this bad boy is done. It's 10x30 1shot enamel on a resin coated clayboard. Wanted a slight 3d effect with the resin coating....and a different approach to the swordfish, a bit less traditional but something that summed up the turbulent times the place has faced...

Here it is...

"The Last Grasp"
