mmmmmmmmmmmmm cheeeeeese.....and spam?

lookin' fantastic! Love how crisp your work is!

Hey thanks man!!

F

I thnk if you distressed the back grond a bit and let a little of that silver poke through, that your platter would be that much better. In the meantime it is still a great piece.

C

very nice!

I concur... I spent a great deal of time covering every inch of material with paint but at some point just let go and started working back into the surfaces. Lately, I seem to hit everything with various grades of sandpaper, steel wool, abrasive pad, or buffing compound. Granted, I love the "splatter FX" (heck I splatter, drip, and speckle) but there is just something sublime and organic about distressing. Just let go and feel it!

Keep up the great work!

thanks for the comments guys...

The platter was a study...and this is the big one.... 2x6 foot enamel and acrylic on solid wood door... should have thought the door thing through. Heavy as hell but it was free, and in my garage already...was looking for a sideshow/old portrait feel...

photo is a little rough but it was 6 feet tall...

now it's back to a tiki painting I've started....

Dooooooooooooooode, THAT would look killer with our Tres Amigos!!!! Arrrrsome job

Dave!
That looks great! Probably more so in-person and life-size! You're right about the pain in the butt part with those doors! I can't tell you how many exhibitions where i was dreading the sound of a painted door being ripped off the wall and crushing some patrons!!! Best bet is a nice sturdy easel to display that! Beautiful Job! Here's to Bigger Clysdalle Paintings!!!

Thanks guys!! Hey Dave, I think you are right, it would look pretty good with them  although this time only one, not sure I could match this guy again  You should check him out at the oceanside day of the dead festival in October, then you'll be hooked!

Bigger is better right LLT!! you are right about an easel this thing would need a steel spike to hang on the wall..

SOLID wood!?! Holy hell! Next time find a hollow core door.

Sure looks good, though.

I've found hollow-core doors sometimes buckle a bit...
Nuthin better than hard wood...
um...
er....
you know what i mean....

R

Dave, Dave, Dave.... ya rock... no you knock... you knock the door... no you knock on the door of awesomeness... no you answer the door of awesomeness with a bag full of candied eye treats.

Happy Halloween.... I mean Feliz Dia del la Morte.

Wow! I can just imagine it standing 6 ft tall--it's impressive with the fiery colors and striking image. Bandito really pops out, and the background splatter adds a nice abstract feel (also like the gaping maws of hell!). Fun stuff.

Take care,

I.

hey thanks I.!! yea it's pretty big....and the colors are even better in person...

and LLT....you will pay for messin with the most wonderful white man fro of all time!

I've been doing research for the myths and legends swap and found some really cool ones. Here is one I did not for the swap but in addition too. I had done the ink sketch and it looked good small so I gave it a try big...5x5 big...

The myth...

*Mares of Diomedes

One of the Twelve Labours of Heracles was to steal the Mares. In one version of the story, Heracles brought Abderus, one of his many male lovers (eromenos), and some other youths to help him. They took the mares and were chased by Diomedes and his men.

Heracles was not aware that the horses were kept tethered to a bronze manger because they were wild, man-eating and uncontrollable, and Heracles left Abderus in charge of them while he fought Diomedes, but Abderus was eaten. In revenge, Heracles fed Diomedes to his own horses, then founded Abdera next to the boy's tomb.

In another version, Heracles stayed awake so that he didn't have his throat cut by Diomedes in the night, and cut the chains binding the horses. Having scared the horses onto the high ground of a peninsula, Heracles quickly dug a trench through the peninsula, filling it with water, thus making it an island. When Diomedes arrived, Heracles killed him with an axe (the one used to dig the trench), and fed the body to the horses.

Eating made the horses calmer and Heracles took the opportunity to bind their mouths shut, and easily took them back to King Eurystheus, who dedicated the horses to Hera. In some versions, they were allowed to roam freely around Argos, having become permanently calm, but in others, Eurystheus ordered the horses taken to Olympus to be sacrificed to Zeus, but Zeus refused them, and sent wolves, lions, and bears to kill them.*

and now the 5'x5' painting....."Mares of Diomedes" Flesh eating horses rule...

Creepy, Yet I love it. I think some red in there to emphasize the flesh eating would be cool, maybe some very subtle spray and a few bloody highlights around the mouths.

Dave:
Gettin all Fancy Pants Scholarly on us!!!
Beautiful piece, with the movement and composition driving it forward...
You can almost feel their hooves swinging and nostrils flaring!
A large majority of artists these days have no grasp of history and/or especially art history, which saddens my heart!
it's great that you're actually reading these old myths and translating them for our times!
here's one you could tackle....
PHALARIS'S BULL(sometimes attributed to Agamemnon (sp?)
a furnace shaped like a bull into which the tyrant Phalaris used to cast his victims.
There was a special instrument in the mouth that would make the moans and screams of the victims
into the sound of a roaring Bull...
No junk food eating TV-addled contemporary brain could think up that!
Pure Wicked Genius! Very Impressive my friend!

Thanks guys...I just keep finding more and more myths that scream to be painted. I've been feeling pretty damn creative these last few months...hope it keeps up!

Nice work Cly. This one's not on a solid door though, is it?

Im hoping to get my Myths and Legends piece done on time, Im doing a piece based on the sea tales of giant squids that attacked full size ships in the days of old :D

I am with you on that. Some red splatters around the fleshy part would put it into the seriously spooky catagory. Those are some buckin' wild horses I'll tell you what. Cool stories too, Clydes. Thanks for sharin' some culture.

Hey thanks guys!!! and next time I'll toss in more blood for the fans!

C

Just got this guy done for a local art fair this Sunday....1shot on enamel and clayboard...6x24 All this religious/myth stuff is seeping into my stuff..

pics a little crappy but here you go....

Nice piece Dave!
the sky is Ultra Cosmic/Cloud-like!
Catching those little skullwing rascals! Classic!
the nimbus/halo thang around the head, plus the skull
in his hands reminds me of some early christian matyr accounts
where they would be be-headed and then carry their own head
to their gravesite,,,there's a technical name for it, but it's lost in
the cerebral filing cabinet today! What are you doing painting
when you have Chop work to do for the Oasis thang? :)

C

Thanks man.....yea I know....I need to get work done...and then last night I spent the night banging out some new skull pendants for oasis and the Carlsbad art fair this Sunday....who needs sleep!

B

Dave, I totally agree with LLT here....that sky is moving 200 mph. That must have been fun! This would make for a cool door too!

F

Very cool, head bat things, Love the texture on the background.

Holy mackeral! Insane line work! Excelent as ever Clysdalle!

C

Thanks guys!! This one is a little better in real life...the camera just can show the line quality very well. I'll just have to keep doing 5 footers :o

C

Hey, just got a small run of these little pendants for oasis...you can get one early from my site if you want to stand out and be made fun of!! Skulls rule. TikiKate wanted cute...this is as close to cute as I can get

C

oh very cute  ! Best wishes!

Nice skull, you could make smaller version into earrings and cuff links. Those would sell like hotcakes.

am I just a dredge that I find no use for cufflinks in my life  I swear I've gotten a few pairs in my life and NEVER used them? am I not being invited to the finest parties??

F

I know the feeling, I used to have to wear tehm to work when I was in college. But the only time I wear them now they are rented with the tux when I'm in a wedding or at a Mardi Gras Ball.

R

Ahh! the pendant skull is so cute!
I think I might have to buy one off yer site, as I am not going to the Oasis...sigh...
