ok, spent some time with Drew Brophy at his studio last weekend and was really diggin his paint pens. Picked up a pile and hurried back to the studio to give them a whirl. I'd used the deco pens before but always found them not very user friendly and having to apply coats of fixative between colors is just a pain. These Uni Poscas are waaaay better and water based.....Here is the first run at them....with process shots!

Attacking an 8x42 long board skate deck...

Finished......and Sold before it was barley dry...on to the next one!

Hope you sealed it properly!
Your skulls are actually getting better!
Yay Dental work and Toof reductions!
So didja try the Cel Animation vinyl yet?
Toe's already got some ,so get on board!
The water-based Posca pens are more user friendly, but be careful when applying them to porous materials
if you check the lower curl of the mermaid
you can see it seeping beyond the borders..
a couple pre-coats of sealant on the board before the Posca would solve that!

L

As always I love the progress shots. Still blows my mind how you get from the start to the end of a project.

Awesome stuff!

I like this one lots, Dave! Is it done entirely with paint pens?
Ditto Kinny's comment on the smaller teeth.

Thanks guys...these pens are pretty great and are the answer to my flying every week schedule that I'm rocking till the second week of January. Here is another study I finished up last night...."El Jefe"

8x10
Painted on an old bandits photo I found, photoshopped, mounted and glazed over....

Well the traveling has limited me to more paint pen work and sketching but here is a smattering of stuff...and there is a pile of new paintings just waiting to be done...

Here is the pile of commissions, sketches and smallish projects from the last month...

L

Dave really love the small round framed pieces.

Your Day of the Dead/Sugar Skulls are my favorite but I am loving that samaurai.

Very versatile and would love to see more.

Thanks Liz!

If you love that samurai...check this guy out. 16x20 All Paint pen on clayboard, no digital stuff here...This is what I was working on till 2am Christmas eve while I tried to stake out and catch Santa. Just finished some touch up this morning and he's done.

Judgment of the Samurai

[ Edited by: Clysdalle 2009-12-25 14:48 ]

Judgment of the Samurai?
What kind of title is that?
he's obviously already tried the dragon
found him guilty of not being "tiki" enough for this forum
and has dealt out the punishment...
More like applying the penalty
than a judgment....

Merry Christmas Dave!
Hope Santa will bring you more Tiki books
and less Posada and Samurai stuff for the Holidays!
:)

L

is that black ink on white board? Your line work continues to amaze.

Hey did you sell these already?

If not can you pm me the prices?

Thanks!

[ Edited by: leleliz 2009-12-28 21:40 ]

A Death headed Samurai battling a Dragon? Sounds like Christmas to me!
Love it! I see it as a large tattoo on some big mook soon, no doubt!

Well it's been a few weeks but I've been busy and there is some tike stuff!

but....it's not scanned yet, so you'll have to wait!

But now for some bigger news...First up, just released, the shirt design I did for Jesse James and the WCC Garage crew is finally available in a limited run and is sellin out fast. It was a fun collaboration and looking forward to more projects like this! They have already moved a ton in the first day, more then anybody thought so I'm really stoked about it.

http://westcoastchoppers.com/limited-edition-garage-tee/

I also got these 2 Guadalupe studies done for a full custom motorcycle design I have coming into the studio next week!

and lastly..here is a commission I did for xmas...for a soldier requested by his mother. The MLU on the front of the helmet stands for "Mommy Love U" hahahah...fun piece....

8x10

Very sweet stuff

4

All nice stuff! I really like the colored Guadalupe. Nice time lapse drawing vid on the link!
I can't wait to see the 'tike' stuff, and I don't even know what 'tike' IS!!! :P

hahaha....see it's been so long I can't even spell it!

Awesome stuff Dave. Are they selling the tshirts at WCC here in the LBC? I want to swing by and get a couple!

Jen

Sorry SD, they're only available online and only a few XLs and 2XLs are left

Being a former member of the Marine Corps
I take personal offense at your depiction
of a Marine as a skeleton....
Doesn't that mean DEATH?
I sure hope that lady's boy doesn't get seriously hurt or killed while on tour
because then your painting will be a hurtful reminder of that...
Being in the Corps,us marines hated death...
Not because it meant an end to life
But it seriously hampers our mission
as fighting machines....

So.... you've not only pissed off Hispanics
with a pure co-opt of their culture (even mi spelling "Bandido" as "Bandito")
and the Asians (a Samurai CHOPPING up a Dragon...one of their more beloved symbols)
Now you're taking shots at jarheads!
And don't even get me started on the Virgin of Guadalupe.... as a skeleton?
I wouldn't be surprised if you get pummeled someday
from some BVM worshiper....

i know you refer heavily on tattoo/flash images for ideas
but you have to realize the mentality behind MOST of those tattoos
is bereft of spirit and respect...
Which is fine for a tattoo shop
but hard to reach an uplifting High Art standard
that all artists should pursue....
May i suggest THINKING first about a subject....
about its meaning and what it means to the original owners of that ideal
before stomping around their playing fields?

Most of us here on TIKE Central only exploit one genre...
TIKI in its polypop manifestation
We base work here on America's original exploitation of Oceanic arts and the Exotic
or revivals of original tribal art
Seeking to celebrate and elevate it.....

You seem to be making a career of stereotyping Cultural standards...
i KNOW you can create work a LOT more deep and meaningful than this
without offending some ethnic group or organization...
Time to step up,Dave!
Less time for self-promotion
equals more time to really think ideas through...

:)

There..... i finally said it...
got that load off my chest
i won't bug you anymore.....

SEE YOU ON THE 30TH!
:)

the opinions stated here are strictly the authors and do not reflect the views of any other TC member....

L

Love that you make so much cash off your talent. Sign of a true artist - getting paid to create and to create more than just one genre of art.

My family are Navy so we generally refer to the Marines as M.y A.ss R.ides I.n N.avy E.quipment - but I am sure the commissioned piece was well received :)

Funny...someone commissioned you to do it so ...hmm...must mean they WANTED you to depict it the way you did. Seems like the only person you needed to be worried about offending wasn't. Guess that's why they paid you for it!

Thanks for the update on my art. I will post a pic when it comes and I get it on display. Really am glad I could purchase it from ya and am looking forward to the piece I can acquire.

EDIT

Hey Dave it came today !

Here is a pic of it on display between the Kit Kat and Swinging Elvis clocks  Thanks again. I love it .

Great stuff Dave... I can always pop in to one of your threads for some inspiration. I want to see your take on bigfoot or yeti... sugar skull style... I won't get offended, I promise.

Kick ass Liz...now I can't wait to see that Tat!!!

I'm in the studio all weekend working on an album cover the band 500 Miles to Memphis....and it's due to the label on MONDAY!!! After that, I have a tiki commission that is ready to roll...so I'll post up some sketches of the ideas and blog/twitter the process pics so peeps can follow along!

Here is the step-by-step from tonight's session...

I thought I was going to have a break to get some new work done but the commissions are booking up solid. I can't wait to work on my clown painting next week for the "Send in the Clowns" show...till then, back into the studio! Well sort of a wild ramble there K-man,

You need to look in a mirror .

Your by far one of the kings of self promotion on here possibly with 5329 Posts:
I love ya but come on..... even yer jab about "thinking about a piece " before making it ???
no one cranks out more stuff than you in a short time frame .

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder .
Being the son of a Marine , I take no offense nor did my Dad when I showed him a ring we designed for a few local Marines who are in the Marine Corp Motorcycle Club.
Most of the people I know feel that the whole skeleton thing shows a lack of fear for death .
Giving Death the finger kind of...... with a kick ass skull ring by SKINNY DOG DESIGN .
Ya just cant beat that !!!

Also we were hired by a group of firemen right after 911 to create this to show, while they respect death.... they don't fear it

Scott

Skinny Dog even though I know you are not attempting to hijack Dave's thread (hehe) I have to say that your Fireman ring is completely awesome!

I check out your site often but I wish you would post some of your stuff on here regardless of it being tiki related. Your metal work is beautiful.

i guess i shouldn't fear the reaper....
:(

Thanks everyone! well that album is finished and off to the label for release in two weeks! Here is the finished painting....

20x16

You can see the step by step process flickr page here....

So now the studio is cleared for two more projects....one is the clown show coming up put together by DavesNotHome which that piece is still top secret, and the other is......wait for it.........................wait for it............. A TIKI PAINTING!!!! Holy SHIT.

I just got this commission for a big painting a few weeks ago and I'm excited to start. It's been a while since I've gotten to bang out some tiki themed work but here is the sketch for the painting....

This one makes me laugh already...I can almost here the shrunken head starting the hot rod up and hearing the screech because it's already started and he's just hammered....and blind. This should be a fun one to paint...and TIKI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

F

Haahahahaaaa... makes me laugh too! Freakin awesome, I want it on a t-shirt. It just needs one thing.... MORE COWBELL! :P

TIKI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

YAY!
diggin the Flintstones wheels and stitched up HotRod!

YAY!
Hopefully, you'll be able to exhibit it before sending it off!

Album cover looks sweet - but will the text be readable at CD cover size?

Cant wait to see the hot rod tiki piece progress :D

thanks guys! Hewey have no fear...when the art is cropped down to size and a little tighter on the artwork there is no problem reading it. Can't wait to see the finished disks roll out in a few weeks!! Here is a link to the band's site if you want to check them out...

http://www.500mtm.com/fr_index.cfm

I dig how the one that SHOULDNT be drivin is drivin...I mean, the kid has stitched up eyes for goodness sake

WHAT! his eyes are sewed shut!.....well that is not safe!!!!

Here is another piece I did while on the road a few weeks ago....little 5x7 acrylic paint pen, ink and water color on clayboard. Inspired by a bronze handle on an Asian spear I found while researching some samurai history.

[ Edited by: Clysdalle 2010-01-20 16:36 ]

KOOL!
Don't ya just love Asian weapons! (I'm still stuck in my ninja-obsession phase from the 80's)
Love da' tiki hot rod! I gotta get back to my own hot rod piece... sooner or later...
Thanks for posting your sketches! True inspiration!

I'm working on my "Send in the Clowns" painting for this Saturday night.....

Here's the underpainting (acrylics)...

And the progress so far (1 Shot Enamel)...

What do you think, is this a case of suicide or homicide?

You can check out the step-by-step pictures in my Flickr set http://www.flickr.com/photos/dlozeau/sets/72157623258380976 but be sure to stop by the show to see all of the crazy clown art!

Well the move is done and while the painters are still working on the other side of the house, my studio is finished and operational!!! Still have tons of art to hang on the wall but here are some pics....now let the art'in begin!

Congrats!
Computer AND studio all-in-one!
Just don't keep that computer on constantly!
We saw what happened when Bruce Banner was bombarded with Gamma Rays!
Better get a rug under that easel, too!

That's the best feeling
gettin it allset-up and red ta GO!
Nice reaper you got started there
those wisps got a Mares of Diomedes feel
reminds me of this contemporary album cover artist
who does these sludgy killer characters and scenes...
i'll scoop ya when i get his name
you'd really dig him...
His name is Arik Roper
and you could probably learn a thing or two from him
he does these great shrouds and mottled robes and stuff...
Please check him out!
i know you never acknowledge my posts
which is fine...
But please DO go check him out!

Hey! BTW ever see Rodney Matthew's work?
You may dig him too...
He did some badass album covers when i was a teen
as well as some killer posters from Michael Moorcock novels
Here's an old Nazareth album that inspired years ago...

Post a shot of the studio in 6 months
so we can see it a bit saltier and lived in!

Hopefully it won't end up like BigToe's Domain of Art-makin!
