4WD: I counted those logs. Actually, stopped at around 170. probably need a few dumpsters. But hey, if I can get 200 logs delivered, I can probably scrape up a dumpster or two...
Heath: My future isn't so bleak. I'm going to take advantage of the price savings of the California foreign labor exchange market. I'm going to not be selfish and let some poor guy feed his his family off tiki toil, rather than do it myself for free. I'm so glad to help the California economy keep on rolling as i build my tiki empire..

Meanwhile,Ive hit an all time tiki low. I've reduced myself to a tiki whore to pay someone to clean logs for me. Some guy bought an import tiki that retails for less than 200. He wanted me to "fix it up all cool." Here it is before, looking like a piece of unfinished furniture. (I did not carve this tiki)

I'm like an auto body tiki guy. Here it is "fix[ed] up all cool." I need to learn pinstriping...(I did not carve this tiki)

I did a jungle themed party out in the mountains at a cat rescue compound. they arranged it so I could be there at feeding time.
Here is a cat eating a chicken:

This cat would only take food by hand

When a horse ran by about 100 yards away, all the tigers went totally crazy. If it wasn't some sort of federal crime, I would have liked to open the gate and see four tigers take down a horse. Now that I think about it, I'll probably go back next year and do it, when my brother graduates from law school. Then I'd probably just get probation and i can pay the lawyer fees when I sell the Video to Fox's when animals attack.

All of the different cats ate chicken, and some sort of red meat with fur on it. In fact, the fur was similar to these guys, and a few goats on the hill...

That must be what they mean by the profitable part of alpaca farming. I was wondering what those people in the commercials do with all the alpacas they raise.

Cool, did you carve thet tiki? :). WHile Zaya is srtripping the bark off those logs, have her rough them out so you can do the finish quicker on them. It'll save you a bundle of time and you would have almost No mess to clean up.

Thats a respectible log pile!

Buzzy I need a job. I look the part of the foreign labor exchange force. And I will take cash!!

Hiltiki: I'll pick you up out in front of Home Depot at 6am. I take care of my workers, so the job includes a lunch, so please order in advance from the provided menu:

Your Boss Buzzy Out!

It was just the one year anniversary of when I got smacked in the face with the chainsaw while carving. I marked the occasion by waking up, grabbing my chainsaw, and safely cutting a log in half with it. After making this single cut, I took the rest of the day off.

The path of the sun is quickly changing and my shade tree is growing back, so I decided to break down the big summer shade setup. This way is much more open:

Been waiting to get these for a while now...

...so I can FINALLY finish this one

In between burning sessions, I've been screwing around carving this face

I'm going to attempt to cram another one of those small bodies under this head.

It's happened several times now. I wake up in a panic. A nightmare. It goes like this:
I've just checked the edge on my favorite gouge; it's perfect. I start to carve and it is like magic. Then the gouge slips from my hand and falls on my brick patio, and lands blade first. I check the edge and it is ruined. The immediate panic felt by me in my dreamstate is enough at this point to startle me awake.
This dream happens over and over in my sleep, and occasionally in my waking reality. This is the only tiki dream I ever have...

Teeva Free Buzzy Out!

H

Buzzy what are your plans for all the tikis in the background??

B

Wait 'til the chisel falling edge first onto the concrete Really happens. You won't stop swearing for a week, then you will invest in one of those rubber mats that make standing on cement more comfortable and also prevent the chisel form hitting the floor edge first. BUT, Wait, what happens after you have the mat, the chisel falls Butt first and Bounces edge first onto the bare floor a foot away! More nithemare fuel!
Nice work.

Benzart: The rubber mat is a good idea, but I'm a miser and would never spend money on something like that. Instead, I'm just going to leave my woodchips all over the ground and never clean them up. That way, when the chisel falls, it will land on the soft bed of chips. The chisel has fallen the way I see it in my dreams a couple of times. Triumpth from tragedy: It taught me how to sharpen my tools effectively.
Hiltiki: I need to find a good home for most of those tikis. Four of them were supposed to go to a miniature golf course, but the whole project got cancelled about a week after I finished them. Originally, two were going to be my front yard fence posts, so some of them may be used for that project now.
Everyone: After I post, I usually notice that I forget to answer someone. Sorry to whomever it is this time, next time, and last time...

On the second day of carving, Buzzy said:"Let him have a body!" And he taketh his hand, and maketh the body...

and taketh a break...

and post.
And Buzzy said:"Let there be shade!" and he went back to work...

Buzzy Out!

Buzzy, how tall is the tiki behind the Bible tiki in the last picture???

[ Edited by: hiltiki 2006-10-18 20:23 ]

Buzzy , you never cease to amaze me. Awesome work.

What did you think of the last ufc fights. Man it is awesome to see in person!!!

Here is Rich Franklin just afer getting knocked out...

Hiltiki: I believe you are asking about tiki#1, which is a mere 3'2"...

Rodeo: Oh man! You got to got to the UFC!!! Wow! Zaya and I watched it on PPV again. Before the fight, I mentioned to Zaya that Franklin didn't look he same to me. Like he lost something. I think that Louiseau fight took something out of him, or at least he still ahsn't fully reciovered. He still looked brokedown to me . I couldn't believe how Silva threw him around like a rag doll.
I do not know who I felt more sorry for: Poor Rich and his new nose placement or Nate Quarry doing the convulsive arm and leg quake after Rich knocked him out a few fights back. Cannot wait for GSP vs. Hughes and Monson vs. Sylvia next month. How is the emotion of being there? Now that the UFC is so close, so often, we were thinking about going to an upcoming one. Is it worth it? and do you miss any of the action?

UFC always transitions nicely to tiki...

Burned ,stained, done!

Buzzy I am really liking the finished new Tiki!!! I really like the patern on the knees. I wonder why??

B

Awesome Tats Buzzy. Now theres a couple tales for the Spermy. You HAD to be thinkin of him when you did those!
Just Plain Cool!. That burner does add some Magic.

nice stuff. like the tattoos. always original.
always looking forward to the next one

Spermy: Ben's right again: I was thinking of YOU the whole time. Glad you like my shout out to your namesakes. Whatever happened to that "Spermy's carvings" thread? Bout' time we resurrect that thing and have another go around at your expense...
Tiki Duddy: You need to invite a friend over with a camera so I can check out your latest. Sounds BIG...
Benzart: That burner is magic, but burned tikis are SO five months ago. Right after I make a mug to commemorate Hukalai, I'm going to go find some rocks. I need to stay relevant, I've decided...

Another day, more work done, more to do:

Missed the Bus Buzzy Out!

wow, the moko tiki turned out great, buzzy! the whale tails look perfect on his knees.

H

Looking good man. Mate, you've got a mountain of logs, no time to start looking at stone :)

KTD: Thanks. Glad you like the final product
Hewey: You should devote at least one night a week to doing what you did the other night. Lot's of work in one night. Or try it seven nights a week...you're almost married anyway, now you will have some fun "chores" to do around the house. Can't wait to see you construct your tropical dream paradise. Do you guys have tropical stuff where you live, or is it like that movie Wolf Creek?

All Right, Who is holding out on us. Not One word about the Big Ku Standing behind Zayas tiki, What gives?
Zaya, It looks like you are doing an Excellent job with the burner, now if we could get a bit closer too? are you doing the KU?

I took Zaya for a night on the town, which consisted of going to an Indian gaming establishment to help me break down a baseball themed party. After the job was done, we walked around the casino floor and found a tiki slot machine:

This machine was made in Australia. I didn't know they made stuff over there.

I still need to do the following tiki things to become a tiki guy:
#1 Gain about 75-100 pounds
#2 Buy a pair of Teevas
#3 Consider a Hawaiian shirt to be appropriate dress in all situations
#4 Spend way too much on a mug and then bemoan about how ridiculous the prices of mugs have become lately
#5 Shoplift something from Bamboo Ben's (because there are no rules in tiki)
#6 Devise a personal scale as to assess the "tikiness" of any product or person, based upon my own biases and prejudices, and pronounce nearly everything to be untiki, from my learned perspective

Being a Tiki Guy is too much work. I just want to carve...

Dude you are more Tiki than most people here if you ask me!! You produce more tiki's than a Bali sweat shop. Besides you are both fun and funny!!! I totally dig on your step by step. Thanks Buzzy for all of your great posts. The new tiki is comming along nicely!!! OA is pretty freaking cool huh? I think the Bali Hai Mai Tais taste like crap. Yeah, I'm leaving right now. It will only take me 20 minutes to get there, but I have to be first in line for the mugs, so I'll be at [secret]'s house for the next few days, waiting for my event mug...

Tomorrow night, he will walk through this door, into the spotlights, and into the hearts of minds of music lovers from throughout the world

From this stage, Jimmy Buffett will wail out some of my least favorite songs in the history of music

This is the backstage VIP party area.

After the show, Jimmy will troll this area for groupies. He will see my tiki with a hot groupie next to it and think for a moment that it is a cool looking tiki. Then he will take the woman back to his suite backstage, and engage in intercourse with her. Rock n' Roll!

Right outside the artist's area, there is a nine hole golf course. For some reason I picture Pink Floyd doing some putts before they go out and play Comfortably Numb.

I found out what that Kaboom sign was all about:

"Orange Buzzzz"- I should be the celebrity spokesperson, but the last thing I need is more energy, and they'd probably make me drink it in public and stuff. They should get hot girls like Xyience does instead.
I got free beer for setting up Jimmy's lounge area. Thanks Coors Light truck Dude!

Buckaneer, my but, Thats what Publix sells corn for over in south Florida, a buck an ear.
It was great meeting you and Zaya tonight at the Bali Hai. Bat Park Buzzy, Pirate, yes, Buckanear- not
HappyJoy see you tommorrow.

I assume the conversation sounded something like this:
"No, I'm sorry, Buzzy, our sign guy, will be out this weekend. He cannot make you an entry way sign for your party."
"Tell Buzzy we'll pay any amount for the sign. We have to have it."
"Let me call Buzzy."

When I got home I heard half the message before it ran out of tape. My side of conversation #2 sounded like this.
"It's Buzzy."
"A sign...No! No way!"
"What?""How much?"
"Really?""But I'm going out all night and cannot get the supplies.I can't make a good sign with what I have lying around."
"It doesn't matter and I can charge as much as I ask? As long as they know it's going to cost them a fortune."
"Money BETTER NOT be an object then."
"Buzzy Out!" (click)

The part of the message I missed was how big and how many bamboo letters the stupid thing had. "The Grand Cayman Islands Welcome You!" Shitty party's probably in the desert...

No woven mats in stock at the factory tonight. That blue paint will have to do...

I'm pissed off, exhausted, and I have a lot to do...Instead of doing this "right," I'm doing this half assed and quick. Instead of back screwing the sides onto the sign face, I just painted the drywall screws with the closest color to bamboo that I had. To do this, I just screw them into cardboard a bit and spray paint them. Look it matches! Sort of...Oh well. Hopefully it's a night party.

Since I had no supplies, I had to sacrifice a few pieces from one of my my 6' by 8' bamboo fences. Guess I'll have to charge them for the whole fence-I'll be cool though: I'll just charge them the wholesale amount.

I changed my work soundtrack from Elvis Costello's first couple albums to early Talking Heads.

Stupid expensive sign:

I use an anvil, a ruler, and a chisel to cut the bamboo to length

If this is how Bamboo Ben spends his days, I now know why he is such a hard partying guy in his off hours. This is boring, repetitive, but necessary to feed myself. At least I'll make up lost income from the seminar. My hands are cut to hell...Worse than a hook knife! How I wish it were Friday at 6 PM again :(

Hey Mom! Here's the party at you know who's party property I told you about last week:
6,ooo sq ft party barn with a view all the way up the coast to San Onofre. We could see the fire start and the smoke follow the wind to the coast and then down towards Mexico. Everyone in Mexico smelled the smoke and said, "Trash day already?"

Buzzy's bone sign:

Cannibal soup backdrop:

Bye Mom. Thanks for checking in on my thread every day.

Final result:

I'm going to work super slow and not carry one heavy object today because I am an artist.

Where's my bottle of Tequila?

Barracho Buzzy Out!

Here is the sign after I shipped it twenty minute express to the Grand Caymans:

Last week that tiki was in Margaritaville. This week, it's wherever the hell the Caymans are:

This party was for a company that was meeting here in SD for a convention next door. All the company big shots were to be there. I was thinking about all the money they were spending on this party, especially on my sign. I bet there is an employee at the company who deserves a raise, but will not get one until the next quarter after this one, because the company needed a stupid sign for the party that was too high to see anyway. I, as well as the SD economy will benefit though. Thanks for the TOT, stupid sign needing company, it's paying for that stadium across the street.

Here is the typical thatch that is indigenous to the Cayman regions. Notice how similar it is to more common types of thatch, such as: tropical thatch, mexican thatch, and pirate thatch. This type of thatch differs only in the way it is harvested. Look at the tree on the right. The thatch skirt down there is picked by hand, and then thrown on the roof for shade.

Don't forget that I carve too: That's how I got started with this all those few months ago.
I was fighting a new tool and a new type of wood(carving sucks when the grain actually matters) with the use of the hook knife and basswood this weekend. I took a log and practiced on technique with a log type that I am used to carving.

It doesn't look like anything but crap. However, I could "feel" it getting better and more correct as I played, oops! worked, around with it. Baby steps...

And a little on this too:

I'm just making it up as I go along...

I missed my new favorite show last night :(

After our brief discussion last night I took the plunge and bought my first few chisels....now if I could only find some logs...?
