Ok here is an update on what I am tentatively calling "Tiki Glade". Obviously it is still in a rough stage...changing some things and finally started working on the part I dread most, the hands and feet! As always I appreciate the comments!

Yeah, he is a bit cosmopolitan isn't he? :)

Here is a detail of the illustration. Got to work on the chimp's right hand a bit and changed the tiki's behind the chimp. Making them a bit more serious I guess...not so cartoony.

Zero - this is my first comment on your thread.

Having lurked for a few months I just couldn't stay silent anymore, I just love the latest artwork posted. There's something sinister about the monkey's eye peeping thru those glasses, but in a good drug-dealer way, dig? For me you captured the spirit of a prankster, like he's taking a dump off of the tiki, over the fence onto the lawn of the background A-frame tiki bar...I know I'm warped but I tend to do that with art imagery - you know, what was he doing just before and just after the scene as shown?

Great stuff here. If you're making the Hukilau scene this year I hope to meet up with you and talk art over a tropi-cocktail. Thanks for posting. G

Hey TikiG,

Thanks for the comments and compliment. You may have read in a previous post that altho' for the most part the expression I achieved on the chimp was accidental, I feel there is definitely something sly about him. And I guess what I mainly feel he is saying is "You have no idea what's going on behind me" or something to that effect.

As for the Hukilau, I was hoping to attend as a vendor but was denied as there were already too many artists booked. I really hope I can book for next year.

I may show up at some point, primarily to visit the bazaar and maybe catch the Neanderthals! Hopefully I can meet a few TCers!

Thanks Chris! Don't mind that name at all...it might stick actually! :)

You know I have plans for 3 chimp brothers...the 1st being the one in the red suit from my illustration LAST CALL AT TIKILANDIA which is a few pages back (or in the gallery section) and there's this one in white and a third, who looks to be a real loose cannon and only exists right now in sketch form. I'll introduce him now:

I then may do a family portrait! :)

Thanks Mike!

I start with a sketch on paper. Sometimes detailed, sometimes not. I believe the sketch for this latest is a few pages back in this thread. Then I work almost exclusively digital. I also on occasion use photographs I take to layer in textures. For example, on this latest illustration part of the texture you see in the foreground Tiki is one of the trees outside my house. In some of my pieces you can see my palms and papaya trees as textures in the backgrounds. I am itching to do some acrylic originals. I haven't painted on canvas in MANY years and it's calling to me!

As I work on the mermaid & Tiki posted above, I would love to know what everyone thinks of this idea.

I was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY and even though my family moved to South Florida when I was very young, I still love Brooklyn and am quite wistful of it. So....I came up with the following idea and would love to know what everyone thinks of this somewhat displaced Tiki. I may tackle this after the mermaid illustration.

Nice work!
Love the moon palace. U iz good!

However, I think you are right, the canvas is calling... It'd be good to see what you can do with analog art. I come from a back ground of digital art - like since the 80's until just 5 years ago. I wish I had put brush to canvas seriously long ago.

Computers are great art tools, and the only way to go if you are doing commercial illustration. That said.... fine art gallery patrons prefer originals on canvas. Your talent level says you could rawk with the big boys in the poly-pop art world. I say go for it.

Here's a quick sketch for, what I think, is a really fun idea. I want to make a map of Tiki Tower Island, that I would eventually put on the website. It would be an interactive map that will feature my illustrations and give them a specific place on the island. My aim is to create a realized world that is populated with my illustrations and the various characters I have created and hope to create. I have been a big comic book fan all my life and have always loved the mythology/lore that is sometimes created and would love to have that for Tiki Tower.

Also a reminder. Memorial Day sale at Tiki Tower! Everything in the Tiki Tower store is 20% off until the end of May! (this does NOT include t-shirts sold through 3rd parties)

zerostreet-

"Cosmo At The Moon Palace" - finished work is pretty spectacular, Robert!

The Brooklyn piece you're anticipating is missing one major element though in my opinion - Coney Island!! Drop the Empire State building with the Parachute Drop tower, add a roller coaster and you'll have a killer graphic...especially since Coney Island is currently being renovated as I write this.

Oh yeah, I agree with Brad, brush and canvas is way more personal and meaningful.
Digital art is mass-media. Hand-made paintings is pure artist expression.

Take Care and I'll be watching for your next update. Cheers! G
