Lol@Pat. That was between 2 of us. There was an Expedition in there also but I forgot to take a pic. We walked from the BART (like a subway if you haven't been to the Bay Area) station. No driving.

Trader Vic's Navy Grog. . . That Spiced Falernum is pretty damn close to Grog Mix

Painkillers. Our favorite here is the #2 version.

I know I promised a new Black Magic tribute recipe a long time ago, so I wanted to make sure the word got out ...

Updated to feature a newly discovered secret mix (#7), a larger format (12 ounces), and lots more wonky details ...

I notice the July batch is darker than the August batch, is that from the barrel aging?

Looks like that end of the bar is just illuminated more. The rums might be the same color. Still, I'm interested to know what goes in to them and what your new Navy Grog recipe is. Care to enlighten Sir Hayward?

You are correct Sir Hooker ... the color was pretty much the same from the first batch to the second. Taste was exactly the same. But the char in these small barrels does have a limited lifespan, so I'm being careful not to push it too much further. Here are the details on the Navy rum:

It's a blend of six rums from four islands in the traditional Navy style. They included 80-proof, 126-proof and 151-proof rums. All were non-aged or lightly aged with little or no added sugar and color. I aged each island's rum separately for around two weeks in the 1-liter charred American oak barrel (Red Head Oak Aging Barrels), then blended them together and aged them for several more weeks in the same barrel.

So it took about 10 weeks total, but the final rum spent about 4 weeks in the barrel. The small size of the barrel accelerates aging. And our Florida weather closely mimics the Caribbean, so the barrel did most of the work quite nicely out on my second-floor balcony. The result is a 105-proof rum that may not be as good as Hamilton Navy but is not bad for my first effort.

It also makes for a mighty fine Navy Grog ...

Birds & Bees Pelee Punch!

Ginger Mojito

Loconut Colada.
1 1/2 oz Catpn Morgan Loconut Rum
1/2 oz Captn Morgan Spiced Rum
1/4 oz cream of Coconut*
1/2 oz pineapple juice
Shake with ice, strain into ice filled vessel of your choice, garnish with pineaplle wedge and enjoy.

  • I use Coco Loco

Pineapple Express

Great use of that mug TBD. Keeping it classic tonight.

Mai Tai

According to an email I got from Trader Vic's yesterday was the observerd day the Mai Tai was invented? Anyway I'm a day late. Plus my orgeat is about to turn. Haha

Varnish Mai Tai!

I was many miles away from both my home bar and any tiki bar on Mai Tai day, so to appease the tiki gods I made up a double and served it in a tiki mug that I really ought to use more often.

A Frankie's Ah Foo. Date syrup reduced to a 1/2 oz and lemon juice subbed with half and half grapefruit and lime
Juice.

It’s 90 degree’s at nine in the evening here in La mirada, California. Glad that I had an emergency pitcher of Sangria in the fridge. No garnish needed- too much trouble in this heat.
Cheers

I have decided that the garnish is what separates the enthusiasts from the lushes. If you are drinking to get drunk (or to stay drunk) you don't bother with a garnish. If you are celebrating (say a wedding, a graduation, or any day that ends in a "y") you use a garnish

Premixed Jalapeno Margarita. Not bad, we always kick it up with a little fresh lime. Not a lot of heat but a little interesting bitterness from the jalapeno.

Tiki Boss :) Looks good
