Can I come to Vegas and be your taster?

I love experimenting with Mai Tais but I'd rather be the drinker than the mixer! LOL

Tonight might be the night of unsuccessful drinks but also some positives:

No 1, Pearl Diver.
Weird drink! Not terrible, just weird. It looks wierd too as bits of goo float in the glass (I didn't strain it) & the texture is slightly unusual. The small amount of cinnamon syrup is surprisingly prevalent in the drink & the Dons gardenia mix is nice 'neat' - I may try making the Dons gardenia mix again, even if its a food / cake recipe.

No 2, Port Light.
I've made this a few time now & moved 'up' the bourbon scale to better stuff (Woodford Reserve) - better than my previous efforts but still not good... really, who likes this drink?!

No 3, Test Pilot.
Ive made this about a dozen times now, with various ingredients & variable results... tonight's is no exception! My comment on the Tiki+ app remains 'ok, not great - doesnt come together easy'.

On the other hand, my persistent experiments with my new blender during Dry January meant that the drinks were good consistency every time so :)

Also, I packaged some mugs to send to a fellow TCer in NY & will be posting some mugs for sale / trade in the marketplace soon! :)

Lori- any time

  1. harry yee's Hawaiian Eye.

Navy Grog

Cuban rum/cigar.

Enjoying my tropical garage on a rainy San Diego evening.

S

This.

It's got stuff in it. Rum and juices and syrups. And i bought some pomegranate/cranberry tea to play with. I'm happy with the outcome.

Luna- looks good
How was the Navy Grog cone?
Send me a snow cone, I'll let ya know if it makes it here...

Special Planters Punch - Atomic Grog recipe
Great drink, thanks for the recipe. I think the One at Mai Kai tastes fruitier. Passion Fruit maybe?

Now I am off to OFF!

Is this Don's Planters or a tribute of Special Planters? If it's a tribute, when can the public get to enjoy this?

Right now I'm having a Pi Yi. Mild, but so good.

It is not Don's original recipe, but it is an older one Hurricane Hayward posted with his recommendations for mixing. He explains it all on his website with the recipe and other great ones at atomicgrog.com. I might try to adjust it to make it taste more like the Mai Kai recipe, I don't know if I will ever come close but I will post the recipe if I do.

T

An ounce of real Unicum that I muled over from Germany (not the sweetened version called Zwack that they sell in 'murica) under a few ounces of cava.

Navy Grog, recipe from the box. Got the ice cone off of Cocktail Kingdom.

Surprising to me that you still add Ice to the drink even with the ice cone. Makes sense but I didn't think about it before I started making Grogs with ice cones.

Stay tuned, I've got a tribute to The Mai-Kai's Yeoman's Grog coming very soon.

Trying not to be a tease, but you'll be happy to know that I've got a Mai-Kai Special Planter's Punch tribute recipe pretty much done. When I finish it up and post, you guys will be the first to know. The one mamelukkikala posted is likely from the current review, the closest ancestor recipe, Don’s Own Planter’s (from Gog Log).

Just got back from the Tacoma Cabana where first we had a Corn & Oil and a Jungle Bird,

followed up by a Painkiller and Three Dots & a Dash.

All were terrific, but long ago I should have thanked Jason of the Cabana for the birthday gift of one of the artist proofs of the Tacoma Cabanas' mug (made by Doug Hawes),

thanks Jason!

aloha, tikicoma

Corn & Oil, I had to look that one up....

S

It's Rob Hawes, not Doug.

I like the vintage cocktail resurgence
going on here, keep it up.

Cuba Libre, or if you prefer, Mentirita.

think I'll have another

Oops, your right Swizzle. My only excuse is I hadn't eaten all day then I drank. You should see the mugs Rob Hawes made after the proofs, they are sweet!
Oh yea, I'm drinking a fruity tropical now that I took my user name from, my own concoction but if I posted the recipe I'd be hearing crickets.

post the recipe tikicoma- let's have a look

I just found out tomorrow will be ANOTHER snow day off from work so I need a tiki cocktail! Can someone come over and mix one up for me? Pretty please?

No offers?

Guess I'll be making it myself.
I just bought a mint plant for my windowsill so it will probably be a Mai Tai.....

Missionary's downfall is a great mint drink if you have the peach brandy. Hot buttered rum is good on a cold day!

Hot buttered rum sounds like a good choice for tomorrow! I have a couple of the Bum's books next to me so I'll look up the recipe. I don't have any brandy for a missionary's downfall. I need to rectify that!

Thanks for the suggestions Luna!

Had 3 exquisite Mai Tai’s at Trader Vic’s (L A). Our Valentine’s dinner was equally good. The Manager, Frank, gracious as ever brought over a delicious Valentine's day (eve) dessert. I was gonna have a painkiller after dinner but I was brought another M T inadvertently -How could I send it back? Wish I had taken my camera.
Got home and wanted to keep the “glow” so I’m having one (1) Cognac Maison Comandon XO. I’m down to the last one or two pours so I’m gonna have to treat my wife CeCe super good so maybe she’ll buy me another .
Cheers

Mahalo Porp!

S

Cognac David? That's sacrilegious. :P

Ron Zacapa 23 costs me $90+AUS a bottle and my local liquor store is no longer going to stock it so they are selling it for half price. Bought two for $47.50 each so thought i'd make a mai tai with it. Pretty damn tasty. Although i might make a few more i won't get to experience this again unless i win the lottery.

Nice pic Robbie!
Savor those Ron Z’s

Robbie, Tikitanker is my alter ego-long story.
i was too mellowed out to make a proper cocktail so I took the easy but pleasing route of the cognac. no mixing,no ice, just dust off the snifter and pour. I’ve had that particular bottle four 2-3 years. It’s very good though I luv me rum.
Later

Fire Rock Pale Ale. Not exactly a tiki drink, but at least it's from Hawaii.

I like dat beer tho my # 1 is Longboard. Same brewery.
Cheers
