Luna, where are you at?

Gettin with the season. Hawaiian Coffee’s (fresh ground nutmeg and fresh muddled cream) Unfortunately, I’m using the last of my precious Trader Vic’s Kona coffee liqueur. Oh well -better than accidentally dropping the bottle.

Cheers

Luna you're a mad man

Zombie

Mixed up a Frankie's Tiki Room Zombie for the first time last night. Not a favorite version for me, but the drink did grow on me a bit as it went. A little too heavy on the pineapple juice and the maraschino and grenadine and not enough tartness or rum to balance that, but not a terrible drink either.

Now time for a Rum Pot using Hurricane's preview recipe from The Bum's new book. . .

Rum Pot gets a thumbs up.

Myrtle Bank Punch.

strong, dry. interesting.

had an Anchor holiday ale, followed by a Donn the Beachcomber-style 151 Swizzle.

Some recent off the cuff libations, tonight celebrating tomorrow's release of Potions of the Caribbean

Turkey & Cranberry Old Fashioned at Bo Beau. Fine beverage.

All the pictures of Hawaiian Mai Tais has put me in the mood. Enjoying a riff on the Surf Room recipe from Intoxica, upping the orgeat a bit, Going with ED 5, Smith & Cross, subbing gold Spanish style rum for the white, and adding a Coruba float. Suck 'Em Up!

I made a Pi Yi with this recipe from webtender.

1 oz unsweetened pineapple juice
1/2 oz fresh lime juice
1/2 oz passion fruit syrup
1 tsp honey mix
1 oz light Cuban rum
3/4 oz gold Cuban rum
1 dash Angostura bitters

Except I used 1 oz fresh pineapple cubes and pureed them with lime before adding the rest. Anyone know where this recipe came from? It's quite good.

That's not the published DTB recipe I have seen, and it's not the Islands Restaurant version from Intoxica either. Interesting. I'd like to know where this one came from as well.

A Tavern Flip. This is something I saw on the menu at Tavern 1903* and I realized I had all the ingredients I needed to make it at home (I had a mini bottle of Lemon Heart Spiced that came as a freebie with a bottle of LH Demerara, and the star anise syrup I made from scratch). This is my recipe, based on other flip recipes I consulted - not the Tavern's recipe (I didn't actually have one there, so I don't know how it compares).

1.5 oz. Lemon Heart Spiced rum
1/2 oz. star anise spiced syrup
1 very fresh whole egg
Fresh grated nutmeg

Put all ingredients except nutmeg in cocktail shaker and dry shake (i.e. without ice) 1 to 2 minutes until emulsified. Add ice and shake again. Strain into rocks glass and garnish with grated nutmeg.

I made my star anise syrup with 2/3 cup sugar, 1/2 cup water and about 5 or 6 star anise (hard to tell exactly because it was mostly in pieces).

A very festive drink for this season.

*Tavern 1903 is a very new bar/restaurant in a very old (for these parts) hotel. The Alberta Hotel was built in 1903, demolished in 1984 and rebuilt (it opened earlier this year) using many original architectural features that were in storage for the last 20 years. The bar is a faithful restoration of the original 1903 bar while the restaurant is sleek and modern. The building also houses a listener-funded radio station.

A little sunday buzz. Rum Julep, Mutiny, Don's Own Planter's and now Last Rites. I ran out of ice so sadly this is going to be the last one of the day, but it's a great drink to end the evening.
Didn't take any pics today so here's a picture of Missionary's Downfall I made two days ago.

Missionarys downfalls are always good :)

Me?

Easy now :) she also got me the Darth Vader of blenders (a big black Kenwood Kmix) to replace my supermarket own brand one - so much better! So far it's been in heavy rotation for Missionary's Downfalls.

A lot of people post beer on here, not exactly tiki but I've been meaning to try this beer for a while to see if the 'Rum Finish' makes any difference:

I'm not sure it does but it's a nice dark beer I'd recommend :)

Doing sour ales at one of my favorite beer bars.

Del Borgo Rubis friut beer from Italy, A Vicaris Tripel/Boon Guezue lambic blend from Belgium, and Leifmans Cuvee Brut, a really nice cherry lambic for the holiday season. I could drink this one all night.

Kiliki Kooler! One of my favorites of the Bum's one-offs; though I find it benefits from an oz of dark.

I like the Kiliki Cooler a lot as well, but I cheat and sub Kahlua for the coffee syrup which I have never had in the house. I wonder how much that changes the overall drink?

SnR- The syrup gives it a stronger coffee flavor. I use Fees.

I've tried it w Kahlua too, but it doesn't have the same 'pop' for me.. It tastes a lot like the old Mr. Bali Hai recipe w Kahlua I think..

'Ti Punch Vieux. And then two more.

Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva. Because I still haven't had time to make hot buttered rum batter.
(Well, and because it's delicious.)

A

Anyone else break up for the holidays yet? :)

Sidewinders Fang (new - ok, indistinct, passionfruit dominant)

Queens Park Swizzle - (old - good)

Gourmet Coffee Grog (new - ok, indistinct, like a boozy coffee)

Rum over ice

Getting into full-on holiday mode with an otiginal Christma cocktail called "Hardrock, Cocoa & Joe"*

Peppermint schnaps, cream de cacao, Kahlua, and cream. Will consume plenty of these along with lots of dark rum amd brandy egg nog over the next week.

  • The cocktail name is a reference to an old black-and-white Christmas stop-motion animated short that was in heavy rotation on local television during the holidays when I was a kid.

Opened an Xmas present early-- a bottle of Kohala Bay!

Superb in a Yeoman's Grog. Looking forward to trying it in a zombie & a Black Magic tomorrow nite..

A new and improved Black Magic tribute has been perfected:

For happy buddha and everyone who has enjoyed the Black Magic tribute: Don't worry, it's just a slight tweak, but it makes a big difference. Also, a similar update is coming for the Yeoman's Grog ...
