Last night I had my first Backscratcher in the Tambu Lounge at Disney's Polynesian Resort. I was surprised how well the float actually floated until the very end. It was a nice finish to a pleasant drink, although I personally seem to find it very difficult to really enjoy cocktails in a well-known and high-volume tourist spot. The bartenders are friendly and awesome -- they always try to do their very best with a somewhat limited selection of spirits and mixers which are provided to them by their employer. They make a very decent Mai Tai version with what ingredients they have available - I've had that a couple of times in the past when I visited. Everything is served with a smile, really a nice place to drink, especially at those times when its quieter and neighboring Ohana restaurant isn't slammed with diners. (Ooooh, wood-grilled delicacies!)

AceExplorer, you may already have seen this on my blog, but for anyone else who's curious I have a pretty faithful Backscratcher recipe:
http://www.slammie.com/atomicgrog/blog/2013/07/31/trader-sams-enchanted-tiki-bar-one-of-many-changes-likely-coming-to-disneys-polynesian-resort/#backscratcher

I've had that drink on nearly every visit to the Polynesian, and I have a backscratcher collection to prove it!

Olole maulua!

Yessir, thanks, I do remember seeing that. With so many other cocktails of interest, I have never gotten around to making or ordering a Backscratcher. Your web pages are a great resource -- the combination of recipes, photos, and backstories are amazingly helpful and fun.

http://www.slammie.com/atomicgrog/blog/2014/05/25/cocktails-reach-new-heights-of-creativity-at-miami-rum-festivaj\

Just scroll down till you find it.
It's a combination of several rums, fresh cucumber, apple juice, agave nectar, lime juice.
Interesting drink, I liked it, a little sweet, I don't like sweet drinks, next time I will put less agave nectar. also, not sure how thick I should cut the cucumber, it asked for 6 pieces... any ideas?

A Mai Tai followed by a couple of beers.
Btw, the Barbados Special rum I used the other night surprised me -I have heard that it was tasty. it makes for a rather tasteless Mai Tai. I am partial to Bajan rums and I made tonights batch with Doorleys.

As good as these are, though, I can see how the dry martini became more popular.

I'm unsure what to call it... Is it a mug, is it a vase, is a sculpture?

Is it designed to be drank from / does it have glass sections on the inside? :)

I was stuck at my parent's house this weekend and only brought over a few rums and mixers and this came up as something I could have made. Now I am glad I stuck with the Shrunken Skull, which was a hit with the family.

You should invest in some phials to store part/all the components of cocktails. I use them to store barrel aged cocktails.

They can be quite handy when you are at something awful, like a dry wedding.
