Pampero is one of my all-time favorite sipping rums, and generally is my go-to rum if I'm going to carry a flask somewhere. Do you really use it for mixing? It's VERY good, and even rum newbies sip or taste it for the first time and love it. It fools a lot of people who would never guess that it's a rum, that's how good it is. I never let my bar run out of Pampero. I also never use it for mixing, but it would be a very good indulgence to do so. Why not mix with it? It is sooooo good! Gotta try a daiquiri with it..... |

Smuggler's Cove uses it in their Pampanito cocktail, which is one of my top 5 favorites on the menu. I've also used it in a mai tai in a pinch. |

kkocka: Great to see you blasting through the tribute recipes at a rapid clip. Nice photos too. If you get a chance at some point, I'd like to hear which ones are your overall favorites over on the Okole Maluna Society thread: If you need a few more suggestions, I'd recommend these that I think I nailed pretty good: Also, The Mai-Kai's Zombie is one of the best versions out there IMHO. AdOrAdam and mikehooker: Mahalo for chiming in with the great tips! |

Right now? At 8:20am in the morning? Highland Park "Dark Origins" - an amazing scotch. It made our dreams come true! I have the rest of the week off, am visiting Orlando with friends from out of state. They tried this stuff as well and are in love with it now. Not sure they're ready for it at 8:30 in the morning, but I'll certainly offer it. Here's to alcohol diversity and you. Cheers! |

Delayed in posting these. Finally tried out Tiki No for myself because I had to confirm whether the drinks were truly as bad as everybody has told me. Yep. The layout and decor of Tiki No is fantastic and has SO much potential to be an awesome place if they could nail the drinks down. Here's what was up for me:

Still mussing around with the idea of a Don's Special-esque daiquiri. Better than the first try, probably because I've accepted that I'll have to use the good rum or it just won't work. |

I just returned from London where we spent two nights at the Hilton Park Lane. This means we also went to Trader Vic's twice: once for cocktails and once for cocktails and dinner. I am glad they had a happy hour! First a few pictures of the decor: First night: Mai Tai Zombie Second Night Mojito - I love mojitos and this one was made with Havana Club. Navy Grog - no ice cone but instead had rock candy on a stick. Tiki Bowl for two with dinner Coffee Grog My significant other had a Tahitian Mudslide for her after dinner drink and it was VERY good. Just don't look up Tahitian Mudslide on Google. You have been warned. It was a great experience. There were lots of groups of business men and women having drinks and I was amused as the most popular drink for them appeared to be Corona. I guess that is considered exotic for the locals travelers. ??? Rick in Texas [ Edited by: rbeyer68 2016-05-09 11:08 ] |

I have not been to a Trader Vic's in the USA in at least ten years so it was hard to compare that experience but they were all very good drinks. I was hoping to sit at the bar and see what they used for the Mai Tai but it was very busy. When it cleared out a bit, I was able to watch a few drinks being made and they seemed to have generous pours. Malibu was front and center on the shelf so that was a bit disappointing but it was also at every pub we went to. The second night with four cocktails each plus dinner was expensive (and the exchange rate didn't help). Regardless, it was well worth it. Rick in Texas |

Rbeyer68, first time I went there I had the premix Mai Tai & the Zombie too - a potent combo for sure! I staggered out that night :) I was amazed at people drinking Corona in there too, I guess that's 'playing it safe in dangerous surroundings'. Having just done it, I disagree - go ahead & google Tahitian Mudslide, just don't expect anything related to the drink or pleasant.
Allow me to chime here - I also don't know how comparable to the drinks in the US the drinks are at London's Trader Vics are... but I have sat / pushed / lurched my way to the bar a few times to observe what they pour. On their speed rail they have Appleton VX, Myers, Green Island regular & overproof. The Mai Tai is premix, Myers & lime. The Navy Grog is Myers, OVD Demerara rum, something gold PR style & their Navy Grog club concentrate. I think (I really can't remember) their Zombie is Appleton VX, Myers & either Green Island or Goslings 151. Last time I observed was a good 3/4 years ago (during a LH151 drought) so this may all have changed. I don't speak so highly of the drinks but it's still a popular destination for me - a real immersive experience when I revisit. My two drinks tonight: Dead Reckoning (made with Mount Gay Black Barrel): Blue Hawaii: I hardly ever / never drink the Blue Hawaii but fancied one & added a 1/2oz of maraschino - a nice addition. |
