Nakahele Knockout, Three Dots and a Dash, and a Mai Tai at Frankie’s Tiki Room (too dark for for pics :), and minus hang10tik :( )

Finished my Passport at Ventiki, earning my I.O.U. fez  with a Voodoo Temptress of the Seven Pleasures, Scorpion, Altar of Sacrifice, and Trader Vic's Mai Tai.

A tribute to The Mai-Kai's Hot Buttered Rum ...

Updated tribute recipe, plus expanded history and review:

Trader Sam's (East) "Nautilus" made in my home bar.

Sorry, no pic, cuz I'm embarrassed to show that I'm using an unglamorous plain-old Florida-themed insulated plastic tumbler.... But that's occasionally what I use when I make and serve drinks for myself. It does keep the drink colder longer. But I drink 'em down so fast it almost doesn't make a difference.

Emptying more bottles, this time my Pussers with a Painkiller

Then to finish the pineapple juice, my own Beachcomber's Shanty (except I opened a bottle of BG Reynolds' Paradise Blend. Two steps forward, one stumble back....)

I wondered the same thing, so I asked the internet: "a type of Italian liqueur prepared by infusing neutral spirits with sugar, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and vanilla, and other herbs and flavoring agents."

Sounds like a great tiki ingredient. Oh, wait a minute....

Sumpin bugs me about it.

I wonder how difficult it is to find in the wild.

Not quite corn'n'oil - Appleton Estate, lime, Snug Harbor falernum, tiki bitters.

Ham, I too was curious and my searching revealed that the red color of alchermes was made, in days of old, by crushing the shells of a scale insect. Dey don’t do dat no mo.
I was just teasing Jon a little bit.
Cheers
Btw, Hi Times has it for 38 bucks( American made) and the Tuscanany distilled for bout $32.

How are the drinks there? I'll likely be in Denver in October.

Hey Mike, of course Hamo Knows more about the drinks at Adrift than I ever will but my wife and our son shared bout 5-6 drinks between us and they were all delish. Wish I could recall the name of my fav. We visited there last summer and some pretty nice mugs were available (unmarked) for sale.
Hamo, I wasn’t trying to steal your thunder-
I’ll spring for a drink if we hook up with Mike in L A next April
Cheers

Adrift is great! We had about a half a dozen drinks (and a few shots the awesome bartenders gave us) and each was excellent. The Zombie is too small but it's delicious.

I agree with everybody else--the drinks are very good, a nice balance of classics and originals. On this trip, my sister was telling me that she prefers Adrift's Mai Tai to Hidden Idol's (funny, she didn't order one herself, so she needed to taste mine to confirm...)

Oh, and now I can look forward to a big meet up in LA in April, plus one in Denver in October!

Have you come across the 100 proof Denizen? I recently saw it on sale and decided to pick it up not knowing what to expect. Instead of a blend of Jamaican and molasses-based Martinique rum like the Merchant's Reserve, it's a blend of "dark" Demerara rum and cane-based agricole from Martinique, bottled at a higher proof. It's got some oak, some vanilla, and some sweetness, which is not my favorite profile, but the added heat and a little bit of spice helps rounds it out. I don't taste a lot of the agricole influence and hate that they're so vague as to use the term "dark" in this day and age to describe the Guyana rum without any sort of age statement. I'm guessing it's fairly young with added coloring and maybe sugar as well, something I've gotten very sensitive to the past couple years. At any rate, I mixed it with Xaymaca in a Mai Tai to add a Jamaican funk element. Not bad. Would serve to guests at a gathering and they'd be satisfied but would not make it my go to. Might be worth mixing that and the Merchants sometime to see how that plays out.

That Martin Casa sounds tasty.

Nui- a friend made a batch n passed sum along
It bugs me: :)

I haven't. Denizen is fairly scarce around here; I was shocked to find the Merchant's Reserve. Maybe I'll look for the 100 proof on Wine Searcher....

Try the Martin Casa--I enjoyed it.

I'm working my way through the Grog Log, to simulate doing it at the Tonga Hut (even through I can't go there directly). I've done 57, with 21 now to go. Last night I did the Test Pilot. Should have used my homemade falernum--I used BGR because I'm trying to use it up.

Good job! It's a bit more difficult to make them yourself. I've had almost 20 years to get it done and there are still four I haven't made yet.

Cobra-Defanged_sq

Cobra Defanged by Luau Lads, a riff on the classic Cobra's Fang by Don the Beachcomber. Not as deadly but just as tasty, the sweet, tart and spicy cocktail reminds us of The Mai-Kai's equally excellent Cobra's Kiss. Enjoy drinks by the Lads and 17 other bar teams on June 9-12 at The Hukilau 2022.

Cobra Defanged recipe and full event preview on the blog: http://www.slammie.com/atomicgrog/blog/2022/03/30/the-hukilau-announces-2022-entertainment-lineup-as-tickets-go-on-sale-for-19th-tiki-weekender-in-june/#cobra-defanged

Thank you very much! It's been fun so far, it's my New Year's resolution to finish haha. What four are you missing?

The only ones I haven't gotten to from Grog Log yet are Lychee Nut Daiquiri, Von Tiki, Flaming Coffee Grog and Volcano House Hot Buttered Rum. Plus the two party punches and two non-alcoholic drinks. I've made 90% of the drinks in all of Jeff's books, there are just always a few stragglers. Do you know about the Grogalyzer? Many of us post our reviews and ratings there: Grogalizer.com
