You should be able to get Lucid in Toronto. The LCBO definitely carries it. It's not the top of the absinthe mountain but it's the real thing (unlike that nasty Hill's stuff the LCBO carries) and not at all bad.

David - no I haven't tried making any syrups. I'm worried they won't last long enough, as compared to the store bought variety.

Jon - that Rum Chata (sp?) is all the rage here in NJ but I haven't tried it.

I am in Florida in December & there is definitely one spot I want to visit... The Mai Kai :)

Tonight, I decided to go for it & make Atomic Grogs recipes for the Black Magic & Mutiny, here are my thoughts:

Wow, what a pair of drinks!

I made 2 half measures to drink side by side - in the Black Magic the orange / honey / coffee is more prominent, in the Mutiny the passionfruit pushes forward but doesnt overpower.

Im not usually a passionfruit fan but I do prefer the Mutiny... (on the next sip) although maybe the Black Magic was better...no, the Mutiny was my favorite... etc etc

As a finale I made a Hukilau, apparently a more accessible version of the Black Magic & Mutiny - I actually increased the coffee in this one & might have liked it the best of the 3 drinks :)

I did sub some ingredients (e.g. Kohala Bay for El Dorado 12 / Smith & Cross or Kona coffee for my brand) & these drinks are complicated (10+ ingredients) - there is too many varibles to say I have created an 'authentic' version but they are definitely worth trying :)

I think Hurricane Hayward needs a bit of credit for creating these 'tribute' recipes, the Atomic Grog is a good source of information & as I hope to visit the Mai Kai it definitely whets my appetite.

Here's to you HH :)

Mahalo TC,
Can’t make it tonight-Weather’s bad here in LA. Seriously though, My wife and I are contemplating a West coast Tiki road trip in the not too distant future. Tacoma might be a good jumping off place. Interesting website ( tacomacabana.com ) and a cool mug that I suspect is theirs. It’s a traditional looking brown glazed mug ,fingers clasped resting on his belly with a “medallion of sorts hanging round its neck. I like the look of the bar itself. Kinda “contemporary” take on a tiki bar.
Thanks

AdOrAdam,

Mahalo for the shout-out. I'm glad you enjoyed the tribute recipes. As you discovered, those coffee drinks can be an eye-opening experience for the first time. You're in for a treat when you visit The Mai-Kai in December. Feel free to post or send a personal message in advance of your trip.

I also wanted to point out a new thread that I just posted that documents my adventure in reviewing and rating all those great drinks, plus how the tribute recipes came about. I also gave you guys on this thread my appreciation for continuing to sample the drinks and check out the blog.

G'day David. I only heard about it a couple of weeks ago myself from a friend. Here's the email he sent me.

"Got turned on to the Fiji Blackout from the Okolemaluna Tiki Lounge. The recipe comes from the Okolemaluna Amateur Hawaiian Bartenders guide. One of my favorite drinks. 1oz maple syrup. 1 1\2oz fresh squeezed lime juice. 4oz of dark Jamaican rum such as Myers's (which the recipe called for) or Coruba Dark Jamaican rum which I use. Shake all ingredients and pour into a tall glass".

I cut the recipe in half for the drink pictured and also used Coruba which is cheap and readily available here. It's a great drink which i'll definitely be making more often. Let me know what you think if you make one.

Hi all

A common complaint from my girlfriend is that i spend to much time making drinks, tonight I'm only going to make drinks for me & 5 friends all at once to see how long it takes me.

I offered to make anything off my 'home bar' menu as long as no one has the same as each other (variety is preferable).

I included little classic menu 'descriptions' eg. Mr Bali Hai was 'coffee & pineapple together at last. In a cocktail!' & Donga Punch was 'a simple drink to pucker your senses'

My friends picked:

Blue Hawaiian, Coconaut, Navy Grog, Mojito, Daiquiri*

Anyway, the rest of my menu is:

Donga Punch
Simplified Zombie
Jet Pilot (I had one in the week)
Montego Bay
Sumatra Kula
Missionary's Downfall
Mr Bali Hai (I had one in the week)
Mai tai - demerara or agricole
London Sour
Saturn
Shark Tooth
Hemmingway Diaquiri
Queenspark Swizzle
Navy rum & coke - Pussers or Lambs
Planters Punch - original or Mai Kai 'Special Planters Punch'
Hulkilau (if you don't know: http://www.slammie.com/atomicgrog/blog/2012/04/17/mai-kai-cocktail-review-the-hukilau-is-worthy-of-its-famous-company/ )

Ill post a pic later. But the question is: what do people think I should have?

A Image Missing: https://www.gravatar.com/avatar/0f90fcec2e91dafaff83ef13dde1ed0d?d=blank&s=192&fit=fill

Ps I'm going to make a Mai Kai's 'Special Reserve Daiquiri' as I think my friend would appreciate it more than a regular Daiquiri

Very nice! I'm sure you'll find that prep work is the key to speed.

Yep, that was my thought, i didn't want to be completely prepared as that would be unrealistic (I'm not normally!).

I did do a few things to help myself out - I did start with the bottles lined up. 1st thing I did was squeeze juices & crush ice. The first 3 of the 6 drinks went well. Then I realised I needed something I hadn't got out, needed another juice, needed more ice etc etc.

The aim was to see how long it took me if I was slightly prepared but not to fully prepared & if the drinks were as good as normal with minimal tweaking > the Navy Grog needed a bit more shaking to dilute it but otherwise they were fine.

Next time I'll try less at once drinks & post how long it takes me :)
