A day late, but it seems like I'm still at The Mai-Kai after five nights of Hukilau revelry. On Sunday, we stayed till the bitter end: I recall enjoying a Yeoman's Grog with Steve Yamada, the head bartender and co-GM at Latitde 29. His boss, Beachbum Berry, has a Zula. |

Nice pic Hurricane, are you planning to post any more event pics at your blog? This years Hukilau 2014 didn't seem to have much pic/report event thread interest on TC from years past. |

That's cuz we're still recovering from the event! I didn't stay until the bitter end like Hurricane did, but I did leave around 4pm on Sunday which is waaaaay later than I usually stay and begin my drive home. I'll post some pics. I started downloading my phone pics last night, need to download my camera pics next. |

Yes, some cool stuff is in the works. Between Grogs, I had the opportunity to interview Mr. Bum and Mr. Yamada in depth. Plus I'll have lots of event coverage too. In the meantime, I posted some photos over on The Mai-Kai thread: |

For a twist on that: enjoying some Plantation 5 year at home, following a Bali Hai Mai Tai - which we ended up enjoying due to not being able to get in anyplace else due to soccer bandwagoners. |

Started an Instagram account since I have fun posting my drinks. ThirstyThursdaysSD if anyone wants to check it out. Just started but it is bound to get more posts on a regular basis. Trying to give more life to the craft cocktail scene in San Diego. I also will be posting about bars wherever I go, but it should help people know where to go for good drinks in San Diego. |

Not right now, but last night. It was a very late night with a tikiphile friend and a tiki newbie at my home bar. We started with a Mai Tai, then sampled some of the special stuff in my bar. Then he requested another Mai Tai. More sampling followed - he loved Anniversario Pampero rum, as do I. Then we finished with two rounds of Viking Fogcutters which everyone agreed were very refreshing. I think everyone slept very soundly when they finally crawled home. I'm not an alcoholic, alcoholics go to meetings. I'm a drunk; we go to parties! |

I guess I get too focused when I'm at a bar, so I don't post what I'm drinking RIGHT NOW. But how about what I drank last night? I introduced a friend to my local Roy's Hawaiian Fusion restaurant in Jacksonville Beach. Those who know Roy's recognize it for moderate to high-end dining. The bar has a reputation for good sangria, and their nightly "Aloha Hour" packs the bar. So that was our after-dinner experiment last night - the sangria. It was very fresh and very good but sweeter than what I'm used to. I don't drink sangria very often, and I like it a bit less sweet and slightly more tart. So for $10 I was a little disappointed. It's only $5 or $6 during Aloha Hours, so that's the tip from me if you want their sangria. I did try their Hawaiian Martini and found it pineapply, tasty, but a bit tart in a strange sort of way. Not a bad drink, but not to my personal taste at the moment. It may grow on me as many initially-strange drinks often do. I will have to order it again. Roy's has an interesting drink menu. but their drinks are unique house concoctions, probably initially created by professional bar consultants. This gives them both unique stuff to sell and avoids copyright issues. For example, their Mai Tai is not the original Trader Vics version. While decent, it does pale in comparison to the original. I have always found their drinks to be relatively low complexity when compared to the original tropical cocktail recipes, and that's to be expected in a venue that caters to the relatively cocktail-uneducated general public. But they have a nice environment and some pretty darn good food, so I like going there for special occasions. The bartender last night - Kat - was out of this world friendly and fun. She alone would make me come back over and over again. She knows what service and fun are all about and we had a great time. She became the third person in our little party that evening. I will return to the bar more often just for the hilarity of watching her with other patrons during an Aloha Hour. Kat told us they recently opened a "Hawaiian lanai" up front outside. I'll have to go back and look for it and see if there is any tiki there. I suspect there will not be tiki, but again, a nice place to sit and relax and enjoy drinks minus the entertaining bartender. Fun - definitely. |

^ sounds like AceExplorer had a good night - good to hear opinions ^ :) I have restocked my normal cinnamon syrup (after using my inferior home made version) & my favourite grenadine (after using an inferior version): Three Dots & A Dash variation on the 1934 Zombie followed by... dare I... another :) The increased lime & Dons Mix alters the drink slightly, I used solo Smith & Cross as the Jamaican rum & 1/4 less grenadine in the second, tis good & strong! :) |

@wizzard419: I'm a fan of making my own syrups but regarding cinnamon syrup, the shop brought wins. My homemade cinammon syrup was lacking in intensity & of a lighter mouthfeel than shop brought cinnamon syrup. I have made it before & had learnt from my experience - this syrup was better than the last but still not ideal. I could have poured that batch out & started again but I can't abide waste so I 'made do' with the homemade cinnamon syrup for while. When ever I thought of making a drink with cinnamon syrup I'd think 'nah' & make something else. Given the length of time a bottle will last me (6 to 9 months), the cost (£7 / $12) is ok with me. So, after a hiatus, getting some new supply in is cause for a zombie-celebration :) |
