I'm doing the Hayward 3.5 version which has fassionola and falernum, no cinnamon or grapefruit. Plus it has a 1/2 oz more rum than yours. Makes a mighty complex and flavorful drink. I'd be curious to try the version you're doing to see how it compares. A friend just had me over to try a Trinidad with homemade cinnamon syrup which was really nice. I will be making my own cinna syrup very soon for sure.

Here's Hayward's tribute recipe:

  • 1 ounce fresh lime juice
  • 1 ounce rich honey mix (2:1 honey, water)
  • 1/4 ounce falernum (Fee Brothers)
  • 1/4 ounce fassionola (see tips below)
  • 3/4 ounce white Puerto Rican or Virgin Islands rum
  • 3/4 ounce gold Puerto Rican or Virgin Islands rum
  • 3/4 ounce dark Jamaican rum
(Kohala Bay or equivalent; see tips below)
  • 3/4 ounce Lemon Hart 151 Demerara rum
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 4 drops Pernod

Pulse blend for with 1 cup of crushed ice for no more than 5 seconds. Pour into a double old-fashioned glass, adding more ice if necessary.

Pretty much obsessed with Jet Pilots this week.

A

I haven't had a grapefruit at home in about a month, got one today, one for me (Steve Crane's Jet Pilot):

One for my lady (a Montego Bay ~ experimenting with 2 rums in that one):

One for me (a Navy Grog):

Once upon a time I used to frown at using more than 3 or 4 ingredients but they're easy to balance when you practice!

Mistake

Last of the grapefruit:

Hemingway Daiquiri Vs Captains Grog

(with a tiki mug throw in) :)

Made a couple Mahalo Mikes from the recipe in "Trader Vic's Tiki Party". First one I made per the instructions, came out ok, but didn't fill the glass...so I didn't take a pic of it. So, for the second, I increased all the ingredients by 50%. Filled the glass, but when it came time to mix the top layer I came up a bit short on the crushed ice. I used what I had, as i didn't want the bottom to melt and dilute while I crushed more. You can see the top syrupy layer (denser than the bottom) starting to sink. A few minutes after this pic was taken, it was all the same color. I had to work on the clothes washer (look up how to bring up fault codes, look up fault codes, remove water lines and clean screens....you know how hard it is to do that after two...technically 2.5 since I increased the second...of these?) so I did't bother to make another. Next time.

It's a souvenir glass from the TREX restaurant in Orlando. I turned it around so the logo was on the backside. I used to see these and even more of the Planet Hollywood ones in thrift stores all the time, didn't think of picking them up until I saw the Molokai Mike photo. Now, seems I can't find them anymore. I only have the one, wish I could find more.

....and now that I am more sober (or less drunk?...) I noticed that my previous post I called it a Mahalo Mike instead of a Molokai Mike. Sorry for the confusion.

Ahhhhhhhhhh

Chipping away at Professor Cocktail's Zombie Horde recipe book this Halloween week. Trying a Founding Farmers (Jon Arroyo) Chief's Zombie for the first time. Used Cruzan 151 instead of the Bacardi that is called for. Very well-balanced Zombie iteration for the most part. Calls for Ango and Peychaud's bitters as well as falernum and absinthe — all of which give this modern take on the classic Zombie enough complexity to keep it interesting. Also includes pineapple juice, maraschino liqueur and grenadine which together probably make the drink just a tad sweet. Will remake and dial back the grenadine a bit, and might sub Lemon Hart 151 as well. I am liking this Zombie!

Jon, Next time you’re at Tommy’s, try the “Rum Babalu”, Kirk and Sweeney rum, lime juice and bitters in a dbl old fashioned, topped off with ginger beer.
If you’re not wowed-send me the bill.
Your friend and mine,
David

Having a Ramos fizz wid my better half. We’re standing under the overhang of the Sharkbite Bar trying to stay dry while listening to that rare SoCal rain. She’s liking the Fizz but I’m not too sure she likes the vintage Hawaiian sounds I enjoy on the Bose. We’re both decompressing after a couple of nights at Humphrey’s and at the Bali Hai.

Heh, heh.....I know what yer saying. My wife and I shared a bottle of champagne (Tattinger brut, if I remember right) last anniversary. And what I mean by "share" was she had one glass....I had the rest.

Like most people last night I went with the zombie, circa 1934.

Dark & Stormy.

But I didn't buy Goslings Run. :( I'm trying Myers Dark instead. Didn't think I liked it on first sip but wow, I'm feeling the buzz! (Guess I was heavy handed but I didn't think I was!?!!!)

H

Three dots and a dash Sippin' Safari
1/2 oz lime juice
1/2 oz OJ
1/2 oz honey syrup
1 1/2 oz Amber Martinique rum, St James
1/2 oz Demerara rum, Lemon Hart
Dash of bitters
1/4 oz Falernum, Fee bros.
1/4 oz pimento (St. Elizabeth)

David- I'll try it next time
Tiki coma- looks good
Howlinowl- I was thinking the same thing
Kkocka- great pic
Lori- buzzzzzzz. Lol
Hiltiki- ahhhhh that's my favorite drink

Keep it up....

Started this afternoon with a Mai Tai, recipe from the Bali Hai in Shelter Island. Orchids of Hawaii X-eyes mug. In the back patio bar.

Finished the afternoon with a Scorpion, recipe from the defunct Moon Islander in Titusville, Florida. Jekyll & Hyde Club Headhunter Mug by Dynasty Wholesale. On the backyard deck under the Huli-'brella.

I'm so jealous you were drinking outside~~!!! It was COLD up here!

Doing some taste tasting, pitting some Zaya against St James and Boltran. Not even close-Zaya is still my # 1 sipper! Had a rum “Mule” and a Mai tai at Billy’s, Newport Beach earlier-Yummy!
Cheers

Island Wolfhound

Mid century Zombie

T

Had a Dark and Stormy kind of drink about a hour ago.

4 oz. Cock and Bull ginger beer
1 1/2 oz. Myers's dark
1/2 oz. Lemon Hart 151
juice of 1/2 lime
over cracked ice

I don't care for Goslings and I like a little more ginger beer so I guess it's not a real Dark and Stormy, now I just need a good name for it

aloha, tikicoma

2 oz Scotch (blended)
4-6 oz ginger beer

Squeeze lime into hiball glass filled with ice. Add Scotch, top with ginger beer and garnish with a lime wedge.

Since I had a bottle of ginger beer opened, I made a dark and story with Skipper Rum. Pretty good.
Cheers again

Mamie Taylor is a really good cocktail. To use up a 12 ounce bottle of ginger beer I'll usually do combinations of Dark&Stormys, Mamie Taylors, and El Diablos until the ginger beer is gone. Now that I have discovered the Rum Babalu I will have to add that to the ginger beer mix too.

You’re a bad influence S&R!

Blackstrap Betty
Forbidden Island contest winner

1 1/2 oz Cruzan single barrel
1/2 oz Cruzan Blackstrap rum
1/2 oz lime juice
3 oz pineapple juice
1/4 oz coco cream
1/4 oz Licor 43
Simple and easy to make and I like coconut flavored drinks.

Sounds like a hi-octane beverage Lori. The Licor 43 is particularly intriguing.Gonna try one or two soon.

It's funny Licor 43 has been mentioned because my buddy and i whipped this up off the cuff a week or so ago and we were both quite impressed with it. Still needs a name though.

75ml Mount Gay rum
60ml Mandarin juice
30ml Pineapple juice
15ml Ginger syrup
15ml Licor 43
10ml Chartreuse
Heavy dash of The Bitter Truth aromatic bitters

Shake and strain over fresh ice.

P.S. 30ml = 1oz
