Couple o' Barrel o' Rums. Outside! Tiki torches lit! Could it finally be... SPRING????

If you live in So Cal it's been like August this week.

Corn and Oil then Three Dots and a Dash, my wife and sister had Tropical Itch's at the Tacoma Cabana.

Than this happened...

Boo Loo, yahoo!

aloha, tikicoma

Well that just looks awesome! No burnin down the house :)

S

My namesake drink the 'Rat Basher', found in Kahuna Kevin's book 'Why has the rum gone? Vol.2'.

Tonight's two:

Derby Diaquiri - quite nice, a bit light
Captains Grog - nice, will make again
...

Ok - two more (I haven't got work in the morning):

Mama-Aru - should have quit while I was ahead, not to my taste
Mocambo 20 neat - a savory sipper for a change

:)

Finally bought some St. Elizabeth and made myself a Voodoo Grog. Here's the lessons I learned:

  • Make sure all your ingredients are cold, or don't add them to the ice until you're ready to blend.
  • You can't dissolve honey in room temperature lime juice.
  • If you microwave honey and lime, you will be cleaning your microwave 30 seconds later.
  • Monin Passion Fruit syrup can not be tamed and will overpower any drink you add it to, even if you halve the amount.
  • I made a drink. It was not a Voodoo Grog. 2 oz of orange juice made it palatable.

Use Smith & Cross for one of the rums. That'll help you on your way!

Pain Killer

PUPLE
From page 173 of Beachbum Berry's Potions of the Caribbean.

I used 3 oz of Ron Carlos Dark (Was out of Cruzan)
1/2 oz of fresh lime juice
1/2 oz fresh orange juice
1/4 oz Don's Spices #2 (50/50 vinalla syrup & allspice dram (St. Elizabeth's)
1/4 oz Don's Spices #4 (Cinnamon syrup)
2 Dashes #8 (Angosura bitters)

A nice drink though it seemed to me the Don's Spices #2 took over the drink with the Allspice as the spearhead.

I'm going to have to play with this a bit; I like the Nui Nui which I find nicely balanced, but this drink I'm going to have to 'tweak a bit'.

Mai-Tai
Lil different
Meyers's and Coruba Coconut Rum

Mai-Tai
Meyers's and Coruba Mango

Black butte and Innis & Gunn

Guinness

Spindrift Jr

A lil tart

Ahhhhh

Diplomatico Exclusiva Reserva, in honor of Joey Ramone.

Double Mai-Tai
(Remember seeing this online somewhere, came out great)

First it was this.

Then it was this.

Now it is this.

Swizzle, nice garnishes and photos. I noticed what look like stainless drinking straws. Are you enjoying those? I recently found, and bought, multi-colored silicone drinking straws at Wally World in the section where they sell insulated drink containers. They are larger in diameter and work well for "thick" drinks which have high fruit pulp content. In my "test" case, I threw a couple Banana Cream Pie cocktails at 'em from a Zen Tiki Lounge recipe and they worked well and looked great. Cheers!

Everyone should believe in something. I believe I'll have another drink!

a fairly mild IPA: bold city's Mad Manatee

Mai Tai’s for two. Ran outta “Doorley’s, used Appleton for 2nd round.
Not bad!
Cheers

I have some stainless steel straws - I don't like 'em, not one bit!

Cold drinks + metal straws = I can understand metallophobia

It works like this: I see a Hurricane Hayward post, I read some Atomic Grog, I make a Atomic Grog recipe... I see a Hurricane Hayward post, etc, etc... which leads me to tonight's drinks...:

Hukilau! :) I keep on making this one :)

Navy Grog (Trader Vics recipe)

Talisker 10 year - a friend & I are a trading drams: he got El Dorado 12, I got this.

Pussers 15

a bock for Spring;

then a merlot with me Easter lamb chops...

I think they're ok, i was just sick of throwing out straws all the time so i bought something that's reusable, although i also bought some reusable plastic ones i'm just waiting on to arrive and i'm sure they'll have a different feel compared to the metal ones.

And yes, that is one of my mugs David. That's the second version of my first design.

Mai-Tai (El Dorado and Appleton)

Sippin time:
Demerara style

1 oz El Dorado 5 on ice
1 oz El Dorado 12 on ice
1 oz El Dorado 15 on ice

Well, it was yesterday, but very much worth posting this Murderer's Row of cocktails at The Mai-Kai ...

From left: Special Planters Punch, Black Magic, Bora Bora, Jet Pilot. With thanks to my friends and fellow imbibers from the UK's Floating Rum Shack, who crossed the pond for the Miami Rum Festival.

Of special note is the Special Planters. A tribute recipe is finally perfected and posted today:
