I credit the Pegu Club with awakening my interest in gin a few years ago.

The Pegu Club is interesting in that it comes across to me as having grapefruit in it, but as the recipe shows, that's not the case at all. It's magical, and tasty!

The Pegu Club is on my home bar menu, and definitely one of my faves.

Nice fleur! I had to look this cocktail up. I presumed green chartreuse might be involved, which I always enjoy, and found a recipe that includes green chartreuse, grapefruit, lemon, and egg white.

I hope that's what your is, Below Decks, because I also found several websites with an alternative cocktail by the same name, but the "alternative" Green Elevator" sounds....well, "yuck" would be the kindest word I could think of: Beer and peppermint liqueur. Ick.

cheers!

Do you lads have a preference as to the orange liqueur for the Pegu Club?

hot matcha.

not tiki, eh, but it is from exotic Eastern climes!

Have never seen that Clement Creole shrubb in the wild. Really wish I could get my hands on a bottle.

Cask has it in their online store, which means you can probably find it in their brick & mortar stores in SF and Berkeley. Call ahead and see if they have it in stock. They'll usually hold a bottle for you if you call and ask.

Well, I'm not drinking it right now, but I was drinking it last night. A Mai Tai in my 2010 Giants World Series Glass from Trader Vic's Emeryville. I'm trying out some new cocktail photography setups for my blog. I've almost got the effect I'm looking for.

I've been using Cointreau, can't remember what else I've used. Sorry. Good drink, huh? :)

My local Total Wine has it on the shelf. Hope you have one nearby.

The Below Decks Manhattan!

Tried the Mystery Gardenia/Gardenia Lei recipe as posted on the Atomic Grog. Looked spectacular but within seconds the butter, which we had melted, re-solidified from the cold of the ice shell...

...and looked like this....

Ended up tossing them which was a sad waste of 3 oz of Cana Brava and the time spent on the ice shells.

Then made a couple Derby Daiquiris.

having a classic Oh Henry cocktail right now:

2 oz bourbon, 2 oz ginger ale, 1 oz yellow chartreuse (supposed to be benedictine but im out); im drinking it on the rocks (but supposed to be shaken/strained); garnished with three cloves of star anise. tasty!

I’ve seen recipes that call for Curaco, Cointreau, Grand Marnier etc.I made my first with a high end Curacao. I now use Dekuyper Blood Orange Liqueur. My wife found a 750mm bottle on the clearance shelf at Hi-Times in Costa Mesa. Good stuff.
Cheers

Spread's Hibiscus Rum Punch!

DtB 151 Swizzle.

Blood Orange Spindrift. It obviously belongs in a large snifter, but mine seems to have grown legs and walked off.

PTPat, Please post dat recipe. I tried googling it and the only place that had it wants you to sign up before they will share it.
Blood Orange Spindrift is an intriguing name for a cocktail.

I'm afraid it's not much more than the Spindrift from a mountain of crushed ice with 2/3 of the orange juice replaced with blood orange. Still good though, particularly when blood oranges are on sale.

2 oz blood orange juice
1 oz navel orange juice
2 oz fresh lemon juice
1 oz passionfruit syrup
¾ oz 1:1 sugar syrup
0.5 t vanilla extract (use homemade, vodka+vanilla bean tincture for this, the stuff from the grocery store is too bossy)
2 oz dark Jamaican rum (coruba)
1.5 oz demerara rum (skipper)
1 oz light Puerto Rican rum (cartavio silver)

Blend (or shake like mad), with 2 cups of crushed ice and pour unstrained into bucket mug or large snifter.

Founder's Mango Habanero beer ftw! (and 10% abv)

I've been busy working on a review of last month's epic showdown in South Beach, "The Art of Tiki," featuring nine of the top Tiki, rum and craft cocktail bars from across the country. Also in the works are recipes for two of the night's top drinks ...

Sweet Micky by The Broken Shaker (Miami Beach)

Pupule Punch by The Mai-Kai (Fort Lauderdale)

Photos are posted. Review and recipes coming tomorrow:

Mahalo Pat,I’ve had a bottle of Skipper Rum in my bar since last summer.
Also have the other ingredients so I’m gonna try one tomorrow night.
Cheers

Porp-how was it?

Had a Billy’s Mule and a Hinano at Billy’s and my TikiQueen had a Mai tai. Rumor has it that they are considering introducing a variety of tiki mugs and possibly a Scorpian Bowl. Here’s a couple of pix of the mug that my Mule was served in. It’appears to be a knockoff made in China. The Mule use to be served in a “Warrior” (Maori) mug.
I’m trying to hook em up with Tiki Farm. Did you get that Holden?

the Founder's mango habanero beer was great! the 10% knocked me out, it was a bomber bottle. the first taste of each quaff is a bit too syrup sweet when it first hits your palate, like a fake mango flavor, but the habanero kicks in quickly and it balances nicely wit ha great finish.

hang10, i nabbed a bottle of that pineapple sculpin but wasnt a fan, reminded too much of the grapefruit sculpin imo, just too acidic for me.

they also had watermelon sculpin, but that didnt sound appetizing, have you had it?

S

Picked up a bottle of Chartreuse on special today so i'm having a few Chartreuse Swizzles.

It's been a hard weekend working on the tiki room here, I've just got enough energy for something to unwind:

Cheers! :)

Jet Pilots.

Porp- don't get the watermelon

This is the Lobotomized Neanderthal
Malahat spiced rum, plum wine, pomegranate cordial, absinthe, lime and grapefruit.
I got to try out a couple drinks tonight that might just make the cut for the new menu for False Idol. Pretty excited to hear some of the things that may be in store for the newest SD tiki bar. I can't wait to sit at the bar... When it finally opens :)

Good looking drink-the list of ingredients is making my mouf water. Do they sell that barrel glass at Soda and Swine?

dem sammiches in the background is making my mouf water-- what is dey??

just drank a Porpoise Constitution. threw in a couple of star anise cloves for some extra spice, drank gud. i stireed it all up wid a plastic spoon- maybe it should be called da Porpoise Swizzle now...

Nui - it was a special event tonight but they do have drinks served in these on their new menu called the Liberty Station Luau. They were tasty! I don't think they sell them, but if you ask they will likely let one go. I got a Malahat shot glass tonight, but I missed out on the False Idol double old fashioned Mai Tai glasses which totally sucks but I hope to get one later.

Porp - yeah the sliders are good. They have a lot of small plate food items. You can get a bunch of different meats served in a bunch of ways. Tonight they had coconut chicken skewers and Mac salad. Food there is always great.

I've really gotten to like Skipper over time. I know it's not the smoothest and nicest of demerara rums, but that heavy, mucky, brown sugar monstrosity of a flavor REALLY shines in certain cocktails, most notably the navy grog, and that 90 proof heft helps it be heard even in drinks where the demerara portion is small compared to the other ingredients.

nice!

just tried the Porpoise Constitution for the first time like you made it, with ice (but no water), swizzled it up-- still tastes pretty good that way!

ah man, best cocktail name ever! any recipe?

drink too many of those and you'll be... rum-running with the devil!!

[ Edited by: thePorpoise 2016-03-15 00:19 ]

I don't have the recipe. I know!!! I already had probably had my cocktail limit, but with that name I absolutely HAD to order it. It was very good. I recall Bourbon and egg whites. I'll try to get the recipe next time I stop in. It's a regular stopping place. Great food and bar.

A Charcoal Gin Fizz!

Enjoying this Midshipmen (self named) in a Tiki Diablo glass. Fresh squeezed pink grapefruit juice with lime, cinnamon syrup and a dash of bitters. I recommend a nice golden rum for this drink. This one is made with yellow label Lemon Hart 80. That's right, I have a small stash of it left. Because the Lemon Hart is a Demerara, I don't uses as much cinnamon syrup as I normally would.
