well, there seem to be primarily two different recipes out there.

the first, and most prevalent, calls for 2 oz rum, 1/4 to 1/3 oz falernum, 1/4 oz lime and 2 dashes of Angostura bitters.

the alternate recipe i came across several times flips the mix-- it calls for 1.5 oz falernum, .5 oz black rum, and 1 dash of bitters. this version looks pretty cool bc the rum sits up on top of the falernum after pouring and looks like an oil sheen (altho i stirred it all up before consuming).

for me, the first version was nothing special, and was also too tart. but i really liked the second version (the falernum-heavy version). it was definitely sweet, but it tasted like some new kind of funky cola or something.

i've seen a few references to a 1:1 falernum/rum mix, i'll have to try that one next.

I really like the Cruzan Black Strap Rum, which is also relatively cheap to boot. By the way, there's a passage in the Keith Richards' autobiography where the great Hoagy Carmichael tells Keef to make sure he orders up some Corn n' Oils whenever he's in Barbados. Way cool!

I started off my holiday weekend with a Nui Nui which was quite tasty. Now I'm on a McCadden Place Mai Tai (you all know why it's called that right?) from here, http://beachbumberry.com/2009/10/10/cocktail-combat-in-kona/

About halfway down the page for the recipe. It is really good, a bit lime heavy maybe because I subbed Appleton Reserve for the Bacardi 8. I'm thinking maybe some Barbancourt in the next one.

Big Mezcalhuna

1 1/2 oz. lime juice
1 1/2 oz. orange juice
1 1/2 oz. Monte Alban Mezcal
1 oz. Cruzan Blackstrap Navy Rum
1 oz. Rhum Clement Martinique Rum
3/4 oz. Passionfruit syrup
1/2 oz. Gran Marnier
1/4 oz. Velvet Falernum
1/4 oz. Demerara Cane Sugar syrup
1/4 oz. Homemade Grenadine

Rim large snifter or tiki mug with a mixture of sea salt, cinnamon, Telicherry and red Cayenne pepper. Shake all ingredients with crushed ice except for Grenadine. Pour contents unstrained into snifter or mug. Float grenadine on top.

Thanks. It still needs a bit more sour to counteract all the sweet liqueurs/syrups, but it's almost there.

Halekulani Cocktail with Okolehao

A very odd tasting liqueur that makes me even more curious about what the original stuff was like. Straight, it has a not-so-pleasant note of baby powder (seriously) that thankfully, the cocktail subdued.

By right now, I'm going back a few hours, but last night I procured the following spirits:

  • Applejack
  • Port
  • Sherry
  • Coffee brandy
  • Green Chartreuse
  • Bol's Cherry Brandy (no Cherry Heering in stock)

...which I needed to make the following drinks from BBB Remixed/Tiki+:

  • Hawaiian Room (Very lemon forward in an off-balanced way. Not a fan.)
  • Singapore Sling [~original version] (If this is the origianl, I can see why they changed it. Just hideous IMO.)
  • Paradise Cooler (Surprisingly good. The small amount of cherry cough syrup...errr brandy actually improves this drink.
  • Pago Pago Cocktail (Makes me happy I bought the 375ml bottle of Chartreuse. Ugh.)
  • Mr. Bali Hai (I can see why folks like this one so much. Now all I need is the proper mug.)

I sure am having fun working my way through each recipe in the Tiki+ app! 88 down, 59 to go (I think)!

Sorry -- forgot my favorite one! I'm still a little foggy from all of those drinks :)

-Schooner (I loved this drink! Reminiscent of a whiskey sour and a champagne cocktail at the same time. If you like port wine, you will probably love this. If you don't like port wine, you still might like it).

Banana daiquiri from Remix

1/2 oz fresh lime juice
1/2 oz. simple syrup
1 2/2 oz gold Puerto Rican rum
half of a ripe banana sliced
4 oz ice (1/2 cup) crushed

put everything in blender 30 sec. until smooth, pour into cocktail glass.

so smooth and easy to drink, real tasty, yum...

Well since I am all by myself on this thread here is the second drink.

Don's Special Daiquiri

1/2 oz fresh lime juice
1/2 oz honey mix (half honey half hot water)
1/2 oz passion fruit syrup
1/2 oz light Puerto Rican rum
1 oz gold Jamaican rum

shake with ice and strain into chilled cocktail glass.
more complex than the banana daiquiri, a delicious drink, yum 2....

I developed this in honor of my friend Melichu:

Pinay Juice:

4 oz unsweetened Pineapple juice from the Philippines
1 oz guava juice
1 oz cream of coconut
2 oz Canadian whiskey
1/4 oz Kahlua
stir on the rocks in a beer mug; add cinnamon and fresh-grated nutmeg to taste.

It was made by Tiki Farm a few years back, maybe more.. Squid's Warrior Mug but in a lamp..
I found this one at a second hand shop awhile back..

new creation, kind of a cross btw whiskey sour, mai tai, and a flower. think i'll call it:

Golden Lotus

2 oz lemonade
1/2 oz lime juice
1/2 oz orgeat
2 oz whiskey (i used Canadian)
1/2 teaspoon Soho Lychee liqueur.

mix up on the rocks.

In Ft Lauderdale on business. I am at the Molokai Bar having a Jet Pilot. It's much sweeter than I make at home. The lovely server says there's honey in it. I seem to taste some passion fruit... I must go.. My PuPu platter has arrived and my next drink-a Zombie- is on the way. I'm in heaven..

My attempt at a Frankie's 3 Rum Scum:

OJ 4 oz
Cream of coconut 3/4 oz
Malibu coconut rum 1 oz
CM parrot bay pineapple rum 1 oz
Zaya rum 1 oz

Nothing like Frankie's but it's all I got without the real ingredients
